At the beginning of man, nature is good, at the beginning of man, nature is evil

I hadn't heard of [Stanford Prison Experiment] before watching this film.
When I was looking for a movie to pass the time, I came across this movie by chance, glanced at the synopsis, then downloaded it and watched the movie.
To be honest, when I watched this movie, my biggest feeling was depression, and to some extent I felt the same, because I had experienced similar experiences, not in prison, but in military training.
Throughout this film, I feel that military training is similar to the Stanford prison experiment.
1. Participants (non-sponsors) of the Stanford Prison Experiment volunteered to sign up for high salaries.
Military training students are obliged to participate in order to complete the regulations of the education system and to graduate smoothly.
2. The living environment of the prisoner in the Stanford prison experiment is very simple, with poor food and wearing uniform and dirty clothes.
The living environment of military training students is also very simple, with poor food and wearing uniform and dirty clothes.
3. In the Stanford prison experiment, the side who played the prison guard was harsh, and abused his power to make fun of the side who played the prisoner.
The instructors of the military training are also strict and demanding, abusing their powers to make fun of the students participating in the military training.
4. The prisoner in the Stanford prison experiment feels that life is like years.
Military training students also feel that their lives are like years.
5. In the Stanford prison experiment, some of the prisoners who played the role of prisoners were resigned, some dared to be angry but did not speak, and some resisted stubbornly.
Some of the students in military training are reluctant to accept, some dare to be angry but dare not speak, and some resist stubbornly.
I listed the similarities between the Stanford prison experiment and military training one by one. I couldn't help but sigh, the Stanford prison experiment and military training are so similar! And every freshman and freshman of our high school will experience a Stanford prison experiment!
It may be that American students were too squeamish, and the Stanford experiment had to be interrupted after six days, while students participating in military training had to spend a week or even a month in a harsh environment.
I have always questioned the role of military training. Relevant departments have said without shame that military training can sharpen students’ will and cultivate students’ hard-working spirit. However, those of us who have participated in military training know that we will complain in the military training. , Living like years outside, really will not reflect on what we do in daily life, once we leave the military training base, we feel relieved and released, we will return to the usual style of life.
As for prisons, I admit that prisons can provide a guarantee for the society. Some dangerous elements are detained in them, making society relatively peaceful, but can prisons carry out ideological reforms so that prisoners can reform and behave again? ? I believe that this kind of power is very weak. It is true that there are people who have changed their minds after serving their sentences, but there are still a large number of prisoners who repeat the same mistakes after being released, so that they are arrested and sent to prison again. It is said that the probability of prisoners in American prisons committing crimes again after being released from prison is 60%, that is, more than half of prisoners will commit crimes repeatedly, which shows that prisons are weak in reformation.
Closer to home, let’s talk about the Stanford experiment itself. Those participants who played the role of prisoners showed us the kindness, tolerance, cowardice, selfishness, blind obedience, and resistance of human nature. The participants and organizers who played the role of prisoners let us see the evil, stubborn, bossy, and entangled in human nature.
We all know that there are two major factors influencing a person's personality: innate factors (genes) and acquired factors (environment). The young people who participated in the Stanford experiment were all adult college students, and the experiment lasted only 6 days. Obviously, such a short period of time should not have a qualitative change in the personality of the participants, but it can motivate the participants. They have hidden potential traits, such as potential servility, potential resistance, or potential malice. Of course, if you stay in a certain system for a long time, it is very likely that a person's personality will undergo a qualitative change: become numb, or become vicious.
Human nature has two sides of good and evil. The impact of the environment on people is like a strong light. When the light shines on the good side, the evil becomes a shadow; when the light shines on the evil side, the good becomes a shadow.
At the beginning of man, nature is good, and at the beginning of man, nature is evil.

The Stanford Prison Experiment quotes

  • Jesse Fletcher: You brought me here to legitimize this experiment and there's nothing legitimate about this place, Phil.

Dr. Philip Zimbardo: You're right. You're right. I didn't explain it well. Prisons, they represent a loss of freedom, literally and symbolically.

Jesse Fletcher: Yeah, but that does not explain why they're wearing dresses. They're wearing dresses, Phil.

Dr. Philip Zimbardo: Yes, I understand. Uh, we're trying to strip away their individuality. Make them uniform. Feminize them.

    Jesse Fletcher: Feminize them?

Dr. Philip Zimbardo: Yes. Feminize them. Take away all the things that make them them. You see, we're trying to understand how an institution affects an individual's behavior. We're trying to do something... We're trying to do something good.

  • Karl Vandy: It's easy for you to say, 'Oh, I wouldn't have acted that way', but you don't know. That's - that's the truth. You don't know. And now I know what I'm capable of, and it hurts.
