It is common to be in trouble in life. In "Halloween Maria", we can't see the strong ethnic customs of Colombia, or hear the gentle sigh of the sea. The only thing we know is the people living in that poor environment. "Happiness Maria" is the film debut of director Joshhua Marston. He has experience in filming the series "Law and Order", and movies like "Happiness Maria" are naturally familiar. Plain and smooth narrative, objective and calm record, lead every audience into a evil cave. When a seventeen-year-old girl decides to transport drugs to support her family while pregnant, it feels like God is dead.

Life is probably far more cruel than movies.

Every time you watch and appreciate the movies of third world countries, you have to struggle. In these countries, there are many real stories that you can't imagine. Most of the stories are about despair and death. In the film "Half Maria", the director did not deliberately emphasize the hardship of the environment, but used the lives of the characters and their dialogues and behaviors to show the depression of the bottom people of Colombia. In the movie, Maria is bullied by a cruel drug lord on the one hand, and treated in a cold storage by the U.S. customs police on the other hand. For a seventeen-year-old girl, there is no more description for this kind of world except cruel. The perspective and experience of the heroine Maria is the main line of the whole movie, and the audience can only follow Maria to understand the cruel world. Judging from the narrative approach, Joshua Marston did not show off his shooting skills. Instead, he used the most true and simple way to tell the story, flatly telling the story, using the tension of the plot itself to promote the continuation of the movie, using actors. Real emotions to enrich the whole movie. It is worth mentioning that the biggest feature of this movie is the soundtrack. In the past, when people were watching a movie, the soundtrack would become a means of emphasizing emotions. In this film, all emotions and tension depend on the plot of the movie itself.

The life struggle of a seventeen-year-old girl is despair and sadness.

In any country, the only thing poor people can rely on is themselves if they want to get ahead. The seventeen-year-old Maria must not only support the financial burden of the family, but also try to help her sister to support her children. Faced with such a predicament, Maria projected a kind of tenacity that did not match her age. Although the director has always put the camera on Maria, but throughout the story, the director still vividly shows the people in Colombia, the price they need to bear in order to survive. In the distant third world countries, Maria’s tasks abound, and her youthful and energetic character and low-level work situation collide with each other. They do their best to achieve the success they desire. In this film, the director did not over-exaggerate Colombia's economic problems and people's livelihood issues, but used realistic techniques to let the audience understand the despair and sadness of Colombia.

In addition to Maria's choice and persistence throughout the film, the more important issue is the so-called American dream. In the squeeze of American-style capitalist business machines, they all believe that the United States is the holy land of gold nuggets. When they came to the United States at risk, what they got was an indifferent customs and a skeptical attitude. Colombian drug lords use them as a means of transporting drugs, but the American judiciary regards them as a dangerous place. In the end, all they have is being slaughtered and tortured forever.
