Ivan's dreams and memories

The dream paragraph is a very notable feature of Tarkovsky's film narrative structure, and it is also an important way of expressing poetic expression in his film. Tarkovsky’s dreams must accurately convey the actual content of the dream on the screen, rather than obscuring it or using some well-designed techniques. Movies should not borrow the effects of drama. On the contrary, in his films, dreams block the audience's attention to the drama, forming a kind of "interval" effect. Let the audience discover the profound meaning hidden behind the narrative of the picture, that is, the poetic nature hidden in the authenticity.
There are four dream scenes in "Ivan's Childhood", all of which are derived from some specific associations. For example, the first dream, from beginning to end, even including the only sentence in it: "Mom! There is a cuckoo!" is the director's earliest childhood memory.
In the second stage of the dream, there is no positive and specific description of the scene of his mother being killed. Instead, it shows that Ivan saw the bucket fall at the bottom of the well and his mother left his hand and fell by the well.
In the third dream, the image effect of the negative film is used: the intervention of lightning allows black sunlight to penetrate the woods and projected on a white flowered rain column, presenting a surreal atmosphere, but its content and logic are derived from Memories come from life. The close-up of the face of the little girl in the dream appeared repeatedly three times, and it was different each time, showing the little girl's prediction of the upcoming tragedy. These
dreams are all made of warm colors and soft light processing, giving people a warm feeling. Compared with the cold and bleakness in reality, this undoubtedly shows Ivan's memories and yearning for the good life before the war.

Ivan's Childhood quotes

  • Ivan's Mother: If a well is really deep, you can see a star down there even in the middle of a sunny day.

  • Ivan: Is he a Fritz too?

Galtsev: He's either a German doctor or writer.

Ivan: They have no writers. I saw them burning books in a square. They poured gasoline on them and set them on fire. There was soot in the air for a week.

Galtsev: That writer lived 400 years ago.

    Ivan: Well, then maybe.
