Inspiring women

It just so happened that Suffragette was released in the UK today, and I paid attention to it as early as the trailer, and my roommates were also very interested. We went to watch the first movie after coming to the UK together. It was a gift for me on the last day of 21. . After entering the venue, I found that there were only two Chinese people, my roommate and I, and there were very few young people.

Before, I was worried that I, without Chinese subtitles, would be like a person who couldn't walk without a cane and couldn't read this movie. The lack of subtitles does affect the understanding of some of the details of the dialogue, but the atmosphere of the whole movie, the interpretation of the actors, and the previous understanding of the historical background make me immersed in the plot, even more involved than watching movies with subtitles .

I cried three times during the movie. Whether moved, shocked, or sad, I think the audience’s response is an affirmation of the appeal of the plot.

The first time was when Mrs. Pankhurst, played by Meryl Streep, gave a speech. It was really exciting. I seemed to have become the audience who stood downstairs with all the women's political debaters. I was very impressed by the sentence "We don't want to be law breakers. We want to be law makers." (Thank you for your correction!). They demanded that their voices be heard, demanded that their opinions be adopted, demanded to be treated equally as men, demanded to obtain the rights that citizens should have-they were arrested. Such a law shouldn't exist at all. It can be used to charge people unnecessarily. If you don't break it, do you have to live like a low-level creature forever? Their approach is correct. If there were no such tens of thousands of brave people to make sacrifices and change the unfair laws at the time, my living conditions would be dark now. But I dare not say that the current society is bright. I think of China’s "Five Sisters of Feminism", think of misogyny speech and remnants of feudal thoughts in life, think of gender discrimination in the workplace, think of domestic fertility policies and marriage laws... …We still have a long way to go. There are not enough people who are awakened, and we need more strength to make changes.

The second time, Maud Watts, played by Carey Mulligan, visited his son on his birthday and found out that the husband was transferring the child to the adoptive couple. She went to vote for women but was arrested inexplicably. Female colleagues and neighbors looked at her differently. After joining the feminist movement again, she was swept out by her husband and prevented her from seeing her children. The scene of the mother and son communicating through the window in the rain made me sad. In a society with stale ideas, you must be prepared for sacrifice, because the conservative forces around you can use all kinds of violence to deprive you of everything you should have and force you to obey the power. The bullying of the traditional world has nothing to say about modern civilization. In order to fight against the patriarchal society, she lost her family and her peaceful life, but she can be her master ever since. The environment is difficult. You can’t wait for others to save your own destiny. Don’t place your hopes on others’ contributions. If you want to change, start with yourself and participate in this revolution.

For the third time, Emily Davison bravely spared his life and rushed to the king's horse. Her death brought the world's attention to women's rights. Since then, women from all over the world have gradually obtained the right to vote, and women's legal status has also been continuously improved. Suffragette first used legal means to fight for the right to vote but was arrested. This forced them to make extreme practices such as smashing glass, putting explosives in the post box, bombing the houses of government officials, hunger strikes in prison, and so on... But their voices were still not affected. Adopt it, and in the end, it won’t shock the world until someone has to sacrifice their precious lives. Women born with no choice, the road to equality is so difficult. But you can't give up, even if you sacrifice everything you have, you must strive for it.

  • Emmeline Pankhurst: We do not want to be law breakers. We want to be law makers.

  • Inspector Arthur Steed: The fear is, they won't break, Sir. If one of them dies, we'll have blood on our hands and they'll have their martyr.

Benedict Haughton: That must not happen, or Mrs Pankhurst will have won.
