movie opens with a group of women in a mutual aid group for chronic pain patients organized by Annette (played by Felicity Huffman). They are holding a farewell party to Nina (played by Anna Kendrick) who committed suicide a month ago. The women present all expressed their anger at Nina's behavior of leaving her son behind for not asking for help. The therapist (Annette) then asked laire (Jennifer Aniston) how he felt. Claire was full of scars. She reminded everyone that Nina jumped off the high-speed overpass at the intersection of Avenue 110 and Avenue 105 and fell into a flatbed truck full of old furniture bound for Acapulco (port city of southern Mexico) for several hours. Nothing inside was found. Her body was put back in the Le Baimei container and sent back, and was stranded in the customs for a week before her husband could take her back. What Claire agrees with Nina is that her suicide did not make life easier for the dog survivor. She hates that.
Claire took a taxi home. She was lying on the back seat because her pain made her unable to sit up. Silvana (played by Adriana Barraza), the servant she hired, was cooking for her because Claire hadn't eaten before going. Claire listened to some voice mails. One was from Annette, and she asked her to find another mutual aid group to help her sort out her anger. One was from her husband, who had just divorced. He wanted to come over to get some of his leftovers, but only wanted to come when she was away.
When alone at home, Claire took out the medicine bottle from a hiding place in her house. The medicine is almost running out. She turned over and over in pain at night. Claire walked to the backyard and soaked in the pool. She saw an possum looking at her. When she woke up the next day, Silvana was sitting next to her bed. When everything was ready, Claire refused to apply scar gel to the scars on her face.
Silvana drove Claire in the car. Claire was still lying in the car with pain. They come to the hospital, but the nurse (played by Lucy Punch) hasn't gotten permission to prescribe. Claire got a strong painkiller (percocet and oxycodone) after she said a lot of good things. When she got home, she asked Silvana to go home early, and then had sex with the family's pool worker Arturo. Afterwards, she gave him a box of children's toys for him to play with the children at home. Outside, Silvana has been waiting for her in the car. She snatched the toy box from the pool worker and said that even if Claire gave it to him, the toy would still be Claire's.
Silvana returned home. Her daughter told her to quit her job because Claire gave her a low salary and a bad temper. Silvana defended Claire and put the toy box in the closet with the toys she had confiscated from other people.
Claire rolled over in pain on the bed. She heard a knock on the door in the backyard. When she went to check, she found that it was Nina who was already dead, lying on an inflatable raft. They sat chatting together, Nina taunted her, saying why she didn't commit suicide if she was an atheist, and then pushed her into the water. Claire woke up and realized that it was a nightmare.
The next day, Claire had a spa treatment and had a bad attitude towards the therapist Bonnie, complaining very painful. Bonnie said she had some needles in her leg for more than a year and it would definitely hurt. Bonnie mentioned that the doctor wanted to know why her condition had not improved at all in the past six months, and hinted that Claire would seek treatment. After everyone was gone, Claire was alone in the pool. She tried to commit suicide and sank into the water with a heavy object, but she still floated up.
Silvana drove Claire to the intersection of Avenue 110 and Avenue 105, where Nina jumped. Claire asked a New York Transportation Authority employee who had witnessed Nina's death what he saw. He said that Nina stayed there for a long time before jumping. Claire walked to the scene of the incident, Silvana was waiting in the car, very nervous. Claire (originally Nina) stood for a while and jumped off. Again, this result is also a dream.
Claire greeted Annette at the office building of the mutual aid group, threatening her to sue her mutual aid group for discriminating against her, and cited a previous case (implying that Claire was a lawyer before). Claire again said it was a joke, she actually came to ask Nina's address. After Annette refused to give it to her, Claire told her that it was no joke about the lawsuit.
Claire appeared at Nina's house and met Nina's husband (played by Sam Worthington). She told him that she used to live here. Roy showed her around the home, including his son's room. When she was about to leave, Roy told her that Annette had already greeted him, and he knew she was in the mutual aid group.
After the medicine ran out, Claire asked Silvana to take her to Tijuana (a city in northwestern Mexico). Similarly, Claire lay in the car all the way because of pain. When they arrived, they came to the pharmacy, but the pharmacist warned them that they could not cross the border without a prescription. The pharmacist sold her an idol, asked her to fill pills, and told her that she would not be caught because she looked like a white wife. Silvana also bought some detergents that are not available in the United States.
Claire asked Silvana to take her to her favorite restaurant for dinner, no matter how expensive it was. When she got there, Silvana met two old friends and condescended her husband's low salary and her daughter could not get married. Claire understood their faces and talked to Silvana deliberately to show that she and Silvana are good friends out for fun. When the waiter gave Silvana the receipt, Claire also said as if Silvana had invited her for lunch. When they got to the side card, the patrol was suspicious of Claire lying on the seat and asked them to stop and check.
At the US Customs and Border Protection (we will see later that the confiscated detergent is laundry detergent), Claire calls her husband (played by Chris Messina). When they arrived home, he sat outside the door waiting for them. He mentioned that he wanted to make sure that they had gone home safely, and did not call because Claire never turned on the phone and never responded to voice messages. He asked her to thank him because she was released on the basis of his position in the government. She did not thank him. He still maintained a friendly attitude and stayed away until she told him what was happening. Claire sat with him and told him that he was better. Then he asked him if he could stay until she fell asleep and then leave, but don't have sex. He did just that.
The next day, Claire waited for Nina's husband at his house. She asked him to take her for a ride. He said he had to finish one thing first. She lay in the car while he was driving, apologizing to him like a stalker. They came to Nina's grave, and he hung a wind chime on Nina's grave. They came to a diving bar and talked about his reaction to Nina's death. He said that he was in a mutual aid group, and he wanted to speak to a mutual aid partner and pretend she was Nina. He said to her thank you for ruining my life and ruining my son. I hate her, I hope she burns to death in hell, Roy said.
When the two arrived at Claire's house, she asked Roy if he could sleep next to her without having a relationship, but not alone. The next day, a box fell from Claire's closet, which contained Billy Joe's CD. In the evening she listened to the CD and sang along melancholy. She took a taxi to Roy's house and told him she was worried that he would commit suicide, but he knew she just didn't want to be alone.
Claire tossed Nina's medicine cabinet, which contained unused medicine. Roy fell asleep quickly. And Claire was in a state of excitement because of taking painkillers (percocet), she had a foreboding of Nina, and Nina jokingly scolded her as a slut, saying that she was taking advantage of others.
The next day, the doorbell woke Claire and Roy. Roy remembered that his mother took his son home. The boy ran into Claire in the toilet. She was taking more medicine. He asked her why there were scars on her face. She told him to let himself pee first. In the car, the boy told Claire that his birthday was coming soon and he wanted a kite in the shape of a shark. The father and son came to Nina's grave and admired the new hanging kite. And Claire was waiting in the car, taking more Nina's medicine.
The three went to a restaurant, and Claire saw Nina behind. But when she walked in front of her, Nina disappeared. Roy showed up at Claire's house and gave her the wallet she had missed in his house. Silvana took the wallet, but Roy told her he had to wait at the front door because he was worried about Claire. Silvana invited him in.
Claire is sleeping and Roy is waiting for her. After she woke up, Roy showed her the suicide note left by Nina to her, which only wrote the words "forgive me". He told Claire that Silvana had told him about her accident and the death of her son. When Claire talked to Silvana later, she learned that Silvana had invited Roy and his son to have lunch a few days later, when she would cook her a special dish-tamales.
In the spa class, Claire apologized to Bonnie for her aggressive attitude, and explained that she was only in pain. Bonnie encouraged her to try to improve herself. Claire then went to the place where the mutual aid group was active, apologized to Annette for her intimidating behavior, and gave her a large bottle of vodka to show her friendliness.
Roy and his son came to Claire's house. The boy wanted to go swimming, but forgot to bring his swimsuit. Claire said that she could borrow her son's old swimsuit, and then went to her son's room (the first time he went in after his death). She couldn't open a box sealed with transparent tape. Silvana saw it and led her out of the room. In the backyard, Roy told Claire that he had left the mutual aid group and would return to work next week. Roy said Claire looked more energetic. He asked her how she managed to still live in this house full of memories. She did not answer, but walked into the room and grabbed a handful of medicine from a hidden place.
During their lunch of tamales, Roy asked about the
place where a painting on the wall had been removed, and she ignored the question. Silvana interrupted them and told them that there was a man (played by William H. Macy) at the front door who refused to leave. When Claire went out to see who it was, she broke down suddenly, let him go as far as possible before she called the police. Obviously this person caused the car accident, killed her son, and caused all her pain. He said he couldn't stand him, but she didn't forgive him at all and beat him desperately. But when she saw Roy's son watching, she suddenly stopped.
The medicine started to react, and Claire's eyes were burning. She tried to take more medicine to relieve the pain, but the result was worse, she vomited. She was already in the hospital when Claire woke up with Silvana by the bed. Silvana chanted and prayed while she was unconscious, and Roy came to see her.
Claire has hallucinations and sees Nina enter the ward with a cake in her hand. Nina reminded Claire that when they were in the mutual aid group, they were asked what their dreams were if there was no chronic pain. Claire said she was going to have sex with the entire Madrid team, but Nina replied that she wanted to make a cake for her son by herself. When Nina threw the cake out the window and jumped down with it, the hallucinations stopped. Claire screamed and tore off the tube, demanding to stop the medication.
After watching a special show at a car cinema in Riverside (a city in southwestern California), Claire remembered that she and her husband also went to the car cinema when they first dated. She found that he liked Billy Joe. After being discharged from the hospital, Claire asked Silvana to take her to Riverside. After they got there, they watched a movie in that car cinema. Claire was so painful without medication, that she needed to get out of the car.
She went through a hole in the fence and saw Nina sitting on the rails. Claire sat down beside her. Nina encouraged her to commit suicide. When they were all lying on the rails, Nina told her that the last thought before death was very important, and that it was everything she could take away. Claire thought of McDonald's fries, water baby sunscreen, and acting as a mouse in The Nutcracker. Then she remembered that she was a good mother and repeated it to herself twice.
Silvana spotted Claire on the rails. When they returned to the parking lot, she kept saying in Spanish how desperate she was for Claire, until Claire pointed out that their car had been stolen.
Claire and Silvana took a taxi to a motel for one night. Claire invited Silvana to sleep with her instead of sleeping in a chair. They fell asleep holding hands.
Silvana loaded the car they rented and returned to the motel. A young girl running away from home (played by Britt Robertson) tried to rush into the utility vehicle, but ran into Claire lying in the back seat of the passenger. Claire learned that the girl was from Boise (the capital of Idaho) and was going to Los Angeles. They decided to take her for a ride. The girl told them that she was going to be an actress, and they told her that she would eventually become a prostitute. Claire gave the girl one hundred dollars and asked her to make a yellow frosting cake.
When they got home, the girls started making cakes. There is a note on the kitchen counter that Claire's husband left, saying that he belongs here. He came to take things while she was not here. She went to the living room and found that the removed photo had been reposted. In that photo she and her son are smiling happily. She cried, but did not move the photo, but let it hang, and even called her husband to thank him for the gift.
Silvana woke Claire up while she was asleep and told her that the girl who had run away from home stole her wallet. Claire didn't lose her temper anymore. She didn't even want to file a lawsuit. On the kitchen countertop is a handmade cake. Claire sent it and a shark-shaped kite to Roy's house as a birthday present for his son.
Claire was carried by Silvana to her son's grave. She hung a wind chime above his tombstone, just like Roy hung for Nina. Back in the car, Claire suddenly felt a desire to sit up. She planned to give up at first, but when the film ended, she pulled the lever and the chair resumed its sitting posture. Claire took a deep breath of satisfaction.
