Ethan and Sophie, a couple who are experiencing emotional crisis, try to regain their passion for love and save their marriage by relive the scenes of their passionate love (jumping into the pool of a stranger's house but being reprimanded). (Credits) They visited the psychologist many times, but the relationship did not improve. The psychologist advised them to go to a villa not far from the city for vacation. So they came to the holiday cottage, but experienced something very bizarre here: they met another couple who looked exactly like them (fake Ethan and fake Sophie).
In fact, this fake couple has been trapped in the guest house. Their purpose is to separate Ethan and Sophie, because only two people in love can leave from here, and they can only leave two people at a time (according to the movie I understand this).
In the beginning, the scope of activities of the fake couple was only the guest house, the wooden house. The fake Ethan seduced Sophie to destroy the relationship between Sophie and Ethan, so that they could be trapped here instead of themselves. What got his wish was that Sophie really fell in love with the fake Ethan, so the relationship between Sophie and ethan deteriorated, and the fake couple’s plan to escape the wooden house went further. Their scope of activities was expanded to the main house (meeting four people and having dinner together), so when When Ethan returned to the guest house, he was trapped and couldn't get out. It was also because his relationship with Sophie deteriorated, and he was one step closer to being trapped here instead of the fake couple.
The ending of the film is that fake ethan wants to escape and is blocked by that invisible wall. Ethan takes fake Sophie and leaves.
Personal feeling:
I think the fake ethan is actually the ethan when he was young. Sophie still loves the funny (unreliable) ethan when he was young. Obviously, Sophie is a naive child who hasn't grown up yet. The fake Sophie is the character that fits better with the current ethan's mental state. Although there are not many words, it reveals a mature and elegant charm everywhere.
In this movie, the rational and mature personality of the male protagonist is obviously inconsistent with the perceptual childish state of the female protagonist. The inconsistent growth rhythm of the husband and wife will inevitably cause the instability of the marital status. Only by maintaining the same pace can a harmonious relationship be maintained.
