The unconventional director of Ealing Films, Robert Hammer, is ready to "ignore the long-established but no-one practiced ethics and make a movie about serial murders." Hammer and screenwriter John Deaton inject wit and vitality into the dialogue, especially the voice-over monologues where Louis is on the sidelines. Alec Guinness, who played the role of all members of the Asconi family alone, demonstrated the rare acting skills of a comedian. In addition, Dennis Price's Byron-like gloomy and seductive Louis dominates the story, and Joan Greenwood plays his coquettish, controlling lover, Sibila. In his short career as a director, Hammer has shot some interesting and unique works, but they can't compare with the calm temperament and Wilde's humor of "Benevolence and the Crown". The film has also become the most outstanding black comedy in the history of British cinema.
