It is my favorite trilogy, not one of them. After in-depth research, I found some extremely interesting details, such as changing the roles of Jennifer and George, the remake at the end of the first episode, the influence on European and American pop culture, etc., write this article and share it.
The "Back to the future" series is my favorite trilogy, not one of them. Compared with other works of the same level, such as "The Godfather", "The Terminator", "Alien", etc., I feel that only the first two episodes are good-looking; only going back to the future maintains basically the same level and continuous plot, so More worthy of collection.
After the recent refresh, I did some research (such as Wikipedia, IMDb, Google) and found some details that I didn't know before, which was extremely interesting. Write a record of this article and share it. Please correct me for errors and omissions.
Sorry because the trilogy is intricately intertwined, it is difficult to write in chronological order when writing, so there may not be any sequence logic.
1. The script and filming of the trilogy
The first episode was released in 1985. Director Robert Zemeckis said that he had no plans to shoot a sequel at the beginning, but the success at the box office made it imperative to shoot a sequel. He and Bob Gale wrote the script for the sequel. But they regret adding Martin's girlfriend Jennifer at the end of the first episode, so this role must be added to the sequel script instead of creating a new story.
In order to save production costs and make up for Michael Fox's schedule, the second episode (1989) and the third episode (1990) were shot together, so the script is more coherent and close. Most actors also agreed to come back to star in the sequel, with a few exceptions (see below).
In an interview in 2015, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale said that they would never allow reshoots in their entire lives, indicating that they have basically missed the fourth episode.
This is very important, because it led to the next series of situations.
2. About changing actors
a. Replace Jennifer Parker
Claudia Wells in the first episode originally wanted to replay the role of Jennifer Parker in the second episode, but because her mother was critically ill with cancer, she could not perform. Switched Elisabeth Shue to play Jennifer Parker. So look carefully, Jennifer in the first episode looks different from the second and third episodes (I prefer the first episode)!
By the way, Claudia Wells returned to Hollywood almost ten years after the sequel. It was revealed in the DVD and Blu-ray commemorative editions of "Back to the Future Series" and finally appeared in the "Back to the Future Game Series" in 2011. Opportunity to voice Jennifer Parker again.
b. The end of the first episode of the remake
Because of the change of Jennifer's actors, the end of the first episode had to be reshot to keep it consistent. In an age without the help of a computer, it is difficult to remake! The actor has been retaken many times to match the ending of the original first episode, but there are still some loopholes. As shown in the figure below, the doctor comforted Matti with no problems in his future, he obviously hesitated for a while.
c. Replace George McFly
Because Crispin Glover, who appeared in George McFly in the first episode, finally rejected the sequel, the plot about his role had to be rewritten from the beginning, so the character died in the 1985 plot of the second episode (killed by Biff)...
It is said that his refusal was due to the remuneration issue, which was only 125,000 US dollars, which is less than half of other actors. However, in a TV talk show in 2012, Crispin Glover stated that this was not the case, but because he questioned the way the first episode’s ending was handled on the set. He believed that the improvement of the protagonist’s family’s material life should not be emphasized, or even let the protagonist gain Cool new car (see picture below). He believes that because of his own doubts, Bob Gale and others deliberately harass him, designing his role in the second episode to have to perform hard upside down, but the pay is less than other supporting actors.
In any case, the role of George McFly still has to appear. Robert Zemeckis took some clips from Crispin Glover in the first episode, and connected the clips from Jeffrey Weissman's performance in the second episode. Jeffrey Weissman wears a prosthetic limb in the movie, including a fake chin, nose, and cheekbones, and uses different methods to confuse the audience, including the background, wearing sunglasses, only showing his back, and even turning his body upside down, making Jeffrey Weissman look different from Crispin Glover is no different. As shown below.
Crispin Glover was dissatisfied with this result. He also questioned Jennifer Parker, who was also a replacement actor, but did not let the sequel actors deliberately imitate the characteristics of the former actor like his role. He went to court, saying that the film imitated him without permission, and eventually received a compensation of 765,000 US dollars, so that the producer said that it would be more cost-effective to know that he would have given him more money and let him perform! This also led to the addition of a clause by the Screen Actors Guild: Producers and actors cannot imitate the appearance of other actors in any way!
3. Predict the future
a. Hill Valley
The biggest challenge in the second episode was to design the future of Hill Valley City. Designer Rick Carter wanted to design a future that was obviously smoke-free and chrome-free and had a different atmosphere from "Blade Runner". It took a full two years. . Robert Zemeckis said that they hope that the future is good, even if there are bad things, it is only because of man-made rather than technology, and they oppose Orwellian pessimism.
b. Nike Mag
Although Robert Zemeckis said that his purpose is not to accurately predict the future of 2015 in the second episode, he still guessed a few future inventions, such as ubiquitous cameras, flat-screen TVs on the wall and voice assistants, video chats, and cosmetic surgery. Popularity, VR helmets, etc.
Among them, Marty's Nike self-lacing sneakers (Nike Mag) are very popular, and some fans think that Nike Mag really exists. Later, Nike released the most similar-looking Hyperdunk shoes. Fans named the Hyperdunk Supreme shoes "Air McFly". In 2017, Nike launched the first self-lacing shoe Nike HyperAdapt. In January 2019, Nike officially released a new generation of self-lacing shoes, Nike Adapt BB, which is more advanced than the ones in the movie, because it can adjust the fit and sole lighting color with the APP!

4. About DMC-12 sports car
The most important prop in the movie is this famous sports car. The manufacturer DeLorean Motor Company is an American company that went bankrupt in 1982 and was founded in 1975 by John DeLorean (1925-2005). When the company was on the verge of bankruptcy, John, who was almost desperate, tried his best to raise the funds needed for the company's survival. He once fell into the trap of the FBI undercover and was accused of participating in drug trafficking, but was subsequently acquitted in court.
Before the first episode of the movie was released, the company ceased to exist, but the DMC-12 car with gull-wing doors and stainless steel body became a famous time machine. The reason for choosing this car is to match the plot of the first episode, so that farmers in 1955 thought it was a UFO.
A total of 6 DMC-12s were remodeled in the trilogy, and there are 3 existing ones, one each at Universal Studios in Hollywood and Orlando.
Today, DMC-12 has become a collectible. In 1995, Texas entrepreneur Stephen Wynne founded an independent company that took over the remaining inventory parts of the DeLorean sports car and the "DMC" trademark rights, but there was no direct relationship with the original DeLorean Motor Company. relation.
Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale once received a letter from John DeLorean, thanking him for immortalizing his car. After John's death in 2005, the car was engraved on his tombstone, and the two wings of the car were opened (as shown in the picture below).

5. Back to the Future
At the beginning of the second episode, they took the time machine back to October 21, 2015 from 1985. This day was also called "Back to the Future Day", which triggered a series of commemorative celebrations. Activity. like:
a. Pepsi Perfect
Pepsi-Cola launched the "Pepsi Perfect" in the film on the same day, with a limited edition of 6,500 bottles. It is now available on Amazon, but the price is very expensive: https://www.amazon.com/Pepsi-pepsi-perfect/dp/B01AXEW0CI
b. Flux Capacitor
Ford Motor has issued 1.21 million US dollars on the Focus and Fiesta web pages to add "Flux Capacitor" equipment: https://thenewswheel.com/psa-configure-your-flux-capacitor-equipped-ford-today/
c. Nike Mag
Nike launched the Nike Mag in the film. In addition to being worn by Michael Fox, this Nike Mag was sold at auction in 2016. All proceeds were donated to the Michael Fox Parkinson’s Disease Research Foundation. sick). https://news.nike.com/news/how-to-get-the-2016-nike-mag
d. Hill Valley

6. Interesting repetition
a. Mom? Mom, is that you?
Every time Marty wakes up in a strange place, he will call "Mom? Mom, is that you?". The most special is the second episode. When Jennifer came to her home in 1985 and was discovered by her daughter Marlene (also played by Michael Fox), Marlene said the same thing!
b. Manure, I hate manure!
Every time Biff is defeated, he will crash into the dunghill and say "Manure, I hate manure!" .
c. Return to 1985
Classic scenes appeared in all three episodes: Marty took the time machine back to 1985 under lightning strikes.
d. Butthead
In the trilogy, Biff often referred to others as "make like a tree and get outta here" (get out) and "Butthead" (foolish). This term was actually created by its actor Thomas Wilson and later used by everyone.
e. Chicken
When Marty is called Chicken (or other cowardly word), he will be irritated. However, there was no at the end of the third episode, thus avoiding the “he had a car accident with Rolls Royce 30 years ago” in the second episode of 2015.
9. Other
a. Clint Eastwood
In the second episode, BIff was lying in the bathtub and watching Western movies with the beauty. Clint Eastwood blocked the bullet with a steel plate, indicating that in the third episode, Marty called himself Clint Eastwood and defeated Biff in this way. In addition, the crew here has the consent of Clint Eastwood himself.
b. Elijah Wood
In the second episode, there are two kids designing game consoles. One of them is the first appearance of the now famous Elijah Wood (the protagonist Frodo in Load of the Rings)!
c. Marty is a sharpshooter
At the same time, the above scene of teaching children to play shooting game consoles also implies that Marty is a master shooter in the third episode.
d. Frisbie
In the third episode, Marty hits the gun in Mad Dog's hand with a plate that says "Frisbie's". The Frisbie Pie Company originated in Connecticut in 1871. Yale University campus used their pie plates to throw, and then developed into today’s Frisbee. The movie reflects this story very well.
e. Chapel of Love
In the second episode, Jennifer in 1985 came to her home in 2015 and was very disappointed to see that their wedding photo was in Chapel of Love (a simple little church, no relatives and friends, not a formal church grand wedding). It also means that Marty's life under this version is not very good.
f. Influence
Michael Fox said at a crew gathering in 2010 that he was often called "McFly" by strangers. What impressed me most was when I was climbing the Himalayas, I met a group of monks and called him Marty McFly!
