Kubrick, the god of Kubrick, the true god of movies. Kushen's to movies is similar to Riemann's and mathematics. There are not many films but each one is an epoch-making work. The Vietnam War movie I admire most is undoubtedly "Apocalypse Now", but "Full Metal Jacket" is definitely a classic. This movie is not so serious, and there are not so many things to discuss, but it is absolutely beautiful. There are too many sections to be talked about, and there are many misunderstandings. I will talk about my views on this magical work from several different angles.
1.Between good and Evil——The duality of people
Let’s start with the title. The translation of "Full metal Jacket" into a full metal shell is a bit inexplicable. The poster with a steel helmet is easy to think of the soldier's hard appearance, but Kushen actually pointed out something else. The film originally wanted to adopt the name of the original novel "Short time", which means short-term service in Vietnam, and was later renamed "Full metal Jacket" (FMJ for short). FMJ means full metal armored bullet, in contrast to Jacketed Soft Point Ammo (JSP). FMJ is not easy to deflect after entering the body, and often passes through the target, and its lethality is relatively low; while JSP is also commonly known as the dum bullet, the soft lead of the warhead part will flip and explode after entering the body to form a cavity. The fatality rate is much higher than that of FMJ. Because JSP is considered too cruel, the Geneva International Convention stipulates that FMJ is the only ammunition that can be used by soldiers, but the police can use JSP. Isn’t that nonsensical?
On the battlefield in Vietnam, the two sides can do everything. You know about the Viet Cong, guerrilla warfare, traps, Agent Orange and so on. For details, please see "Heaven and earth" and "Deer Hunter". Animal Mother always carried a machete. The original ending of the film was that after the clown killed the sniper, Animal Mother chopped off her head with this machete and threw it out the window. She carried the whole film to prepare for this at the end. In the film, the Vietnamese can be killed at will. Of course, it is almost the same in reality. At the end, the clown kills a "Women and Children". The soldiers were caught in extreme violence, and the big men used FMJ to show humanitarianism, which is an irony of the hypocrisy of the Vietnam War.
The theme of "Full metal jacket" is the duality between human good and evil. The audiovisual language and lines of the film reflect this duality everywhere. The good in the Vietnam War is more like a lie, and a lie is more offensive than pure evil, just as the title of the film is ironic. The slogan typed in the editorial office of the Stars and Stripes directly called this point-"We will defend to the death your right to be misinformed." We will defend to the death your right to be misinformed. ? Only two officers appeared in the film. The officers represent the official image of the U.S. military. They both questioned the duality of human beings, and they all questioned the good parts of human nature:
The first officer was a news editor, and the image that the Americans wanted to show to the world was directly spoken through his mouth:
we run two basic stories here. Grunts whogive half their pay to buy gooks toothbrushes and deodorants—Winning of Heartsand Minds--okay? And combat action that results in a kill--Winning the War.
The editor reminded the clown to let him take off the peace badge, because "How's it gonna look if you get killed wearing a peace symbol?" The badge is dead, it doesn't look good like that. But he didn't care that Joker died with a helmet that said "Born to kill". Of course, this kind of garbage editor clown is disdainful. It is better to go to the front than to engage in Mickey mouse shit with you here. Even pure evil is better than hypocrisy.
The Marine Corps colonel couldn't understand the clown's peace badge. When the clown told him that it was a metaphor for the duality of humans, the colonel asked two questions as if he didn't understand it:
Whose side are you on, son?
Don't you love your country?
It's a classic rhetorical question of fifty cents awkwardness, and can deal with all questions that don't know how to answer. In this passage, the clown did not even look at the colonel when he was talking. The chicken and the duck said that the colonel's shot here uses a back shot, which is a satire that the mainstream American values are worthless in the face of cruel reality. The background of this scene is a row of South Vietnamese civilians who were shot or buried alive by the Viet Cong. The Viet Cong appears to be much purer. They will not give the South Vietnamese civilians a toothbrush and just kill them. Fighting is killing people. Why should you send you a toothbrush first because they are here to kill you?
At the end of the film, when the clown fired at the female sniper, the collar was slightly rolled up, the peace badge was completely covered the moment the bullet was shot, and the clown’s goodness was completely gone.
2. The dehumanization of the self-the disappearance of the individual and the establishment of the collective
"Full Metal Shell" starts from the classic shave scene. Hair has been a symbolic decoration of warriors since ancient times. Ancient Germanic and Celtic warriors like to wear long hair to make themselves look taller. Indian warriors use feathers to decorate their hair. During the Vietnam War, the army began to keep it from the practicality of hygiene and bandaging. Jar head may simply shave it like in the movie. In short, your body and spirit have been GI (Government Issue) since you enlisted in the army. They belong to the government and can do whatever the government wants. The first background music of the film is "Hello Vietnam". This song won the championship for three consecutive weeks at the US Billboard Hot Country Singles. The voice and lyrics are very similar to Yan Weiwen, and the main melody of each country is really the same.
The background music clearly tells you, why do you want to fight the Vietnam War?
"I hope and praysomeday the world will learn, that fires we don't put out will bigger burn. Wemust save freedom now at any cost... or someday our own freedom will be lost."
Shaving the head is the beginning of service and the procedure before the operation. Music is farewell and brainwashing. While shaving the head and brainwashing, both mind and body are used to treat all kinds of dissatisfaction. What follows is the famous cursing passage of the famous education monitor, showing the insurmountable peak of the art of cursing in English. Originally played the role of education squad leader, Lee Ermy shocked Kushen with his cursing skills without opening his mouth. He took this role in one fell swoop, and has since become an unofficial Marine Corps ambassador.
"If you survive recruit training, you willbe a weapon"
"But until that day you are pukes"
"You are not even human fucking being, you are unorganized a piece of shit"
The educational squad leader answered the three questions of the soldier’s philosophy: You are not humans, you are vomit; it doesn’t matter where you come from, "you are all equally worthless"; and after training you are a weapon, you Organized, you are going to Vietnam, the meaning of soldiers to the army is nothing more. A long shot was used in this section, and the education squad leader walked two laps. The positions of the clowns, Cowboy and Pyle in the first and second laps are different. Obviously this is not a gang shot, but a deliberate arrangement by Kushen, which implies The soldiers have no identities and can be interchanged at will. The three protagonists don't even have names. At the end of the new training section, the clown said in a voice-over, "The Marines don't need robots." Don't be fooled by the lines. Of course, the clown knows that the Marines want robots.
In the West, humor is a means to fight against power. The imperialist army’s counter-interrogation training emphasizes humor, which is a self-deprecating self-deprecating way to interrupt the interrogation rhythm of the opponent. One of the tricks in the Harry Potter Defense Against the Dark Arts class is to turn scared things into funny things. In the whole film, the clown is just a talkative, and his "humor" is his weapon against power. If the clown is a cross talk actor, Pyle is an action comedian. Although the obstacle course training is cruel but full of comedy, even the education squad leader scolds him with funny words: "You are so ugly you can be a modern art master piece."" "Your ass look like a 150 ponds chewed bubble gum", he is not funny when he scolds others. The name Gomer Pyle comes from the American drama of the same name in the 1960s, similar to our "Story of the Cooking Class", the protagonist Pyle is a funny marine who is stupid and always makes trouble for the chief officer. From this point of view, the clown and Pyle are the same role. If you think of Pyle as the weak personality of the clown being eliminated in the boot camp, it is not unreasonable. The education squad leader's method of dealing with this kind of thorns was simple and rude, and it was done. After a pass of Ollie, Pyle's smile disappeared, and later he got a new skill-Kubrick stared.
Although FMJ is a rare two-part structured film, the confrontation between the two parts is quite neat, and basically all the elements in the upper part can be found in the lower part. The clowns and Cowboys throughout the whole process will not be mentioned. The black Snow ball in the front corresponds to the Eight Ball in the back, and Pyle also has a corresponding, which is the Animal Mother in the back. We will translate him into an orc.
There are many hints in the film that Pyle is the counterpart of the orcs. First of all, Orcs and Pyle look alike. Both of them are the biggest and strongest in the class. They both have poor brains. They always perform tasks without thinking. Orcs always half-close their eyes. Same as Pyle. In the first part, Pyle's shooting scores are very good. When the education squad leader exams the regulations, he replies fluently. The education squad leader praised him "You are definitely born again hard, I may even allow you to serve inmy beloved corps as a rifle man." Finally, Pyle also did. Become an infantryman. The words "I'm become death" on the helmet of the orc corresponded to the death of Pyle in the first half.
When the clown met the orcs for the first time in Hue, the two had a serious dispute. Note that the shots for the orcs here are all upside-down shots, while the shots for the clowns are all flat. The lens language shows that the orcs are perfect and Lu The kind of exemplary soldier the team wanted, but the Joker was obviously not. So the question is, why didn't Pyle become an orc? Didn't become a model marine? The difference is whether it can be integrated into the collective after the self disappears.
The education squad leader has not been very successful in brainwashing clowns, and there is a correspondence in the upper and lower parts. The education squad leader asked the clown if he believed in the Virgin Mary, but the clown said he did not believe it. This was originally to insist on thinking and not blindly follow, but in the cognition of the education squad leader, this is the "species" of the clown. When the squad leader is a requirement, "there is a kind". Pyle, the boss of the recruit company, will be brought by you. Bar.
The part of Joker and Pyle is the rare warmth part of the whole film. They fucking guns together, tying shoelaces and putting on clothes to make a bed together. The clown is meticulous. But is there any effect? When Pyle was caught eating doughnuts, and even punished to do push-ups and Burpee jumps, we realized that the "education of love" was useless at all. There is also a set of lens language correspondences here. Pyle was punished to sit on the table and eat fingers when he was in Burpee. It was the same as the previous training in the queue to eat fingers, which proved that Pyle has not changed. "The education of love" is useless, so let the education of hate be given, so Pyle was beaten at night.
Sitting even is a double-edged sword. It can indeed enhance collective cohesion. Either collectively help the "black sheep" and let him catch up with the progress and be accepted by the collective again, or simply eliminate the black sheep. Pyle obviously belongs to the latter. After being beaten up, he never said a word. He didn't communicate with anyone anymore. His training performance became better and better. He performed well in shooting and rules learning. Even the education squad leader looked at him with admiration, but he still failed. Re-integrate into the collective, if he integrates, then he will become an orc. The purpose of the Marine Corps to lose oneself is to integrate into the collective. The "I'm become death" written on the orc helmet is echoed by the squad leader's "You aredefinitely reborn and gain hard", but once you lose yourself, you do not integrate into the collective. Then there is only a dead end.
Of course, there can be another understanding. If you understand Cowboy, Pyle, and the Joker as one person as mentioned earlier, the night passage is much more interesting. We can see that when the education squad leader turns off the lights, the barracks are dark, and all nights when things happen are always illuminated by weird blue lights. These passages can be understood as nightmares. In the training process, all the thinking of the clown is completed in the toilet, and according to navy tradition, the toilet is called "Head". The clown and the cowboy discuss that Pyle is not right in the head. Pyle shoots and kills the education squad leader is also in the head. Kushen is afraid that you can’t see it and took a flashlight. Pyle’s death symbolizes the death of the weak child in the clown’s heart, recruits. The battalion completed the dehumanization of the soldiers.
4. Violence and sex——This is my rifle this is my gun, This is for fighting this is for fun
How does a person become a weapon? According to the understanding in the film is to stop thinking and act instinctively according to commands. The instincts of soldiers are reduced to two points: sex and violence. The first half of it seems that sex is only a source of inspiration for educating the squad leader to curse people, but this is obviously intended by Kushen. Ironically, do you still remember the anti-war slogans of the hippies? "Make love, not war". For the Marines, the two are the same thing. After the second half of the estrus pig squad really went to the battlefield, the two became more and more inseparable. In the end, sex and violence have become the same in terms of language and deeds. The duality of the subject of the film can be reflected in the lines and lens language everywhere.
Let's start with how the squad leader scolds people fancyly. F*** is really too elementary. The swear words of the squad leader can probably be divided into several categories:
Use sex to demean soldiers' masculinity
"Do you suck dicks!" appeared many times, and basically asked everybody, embarrassing.
I'll bet you're the kind of guy that would Fuck a person in the ass and not even have the goddam common courtesy to give him a reach-around!
I'll bet you could suck a golf ball through a garden hose!
Use sex to strengthen the relationship between soldiers and weapons
"This is my rifle this is my gun, This is for fighting this is for fun"
Because this is the only pussy you people are going to get! Your days of finger-banging old Mary Jane Rottencrotch through her pretty pink panties are over! You're married to this piece, this weapon of iron and wood! And you will be faithful!"
In fact, this paragraph is still weakened. The real Marine Corps has done more too much. Every part of the rifle has a corresponding. The front sight, trigger and magazine correspond to XX, XX and XX. I will not drive anymore. You know .
Used to dehumanize the enemy and brainwash the enemy
Ho Chi Minh is a son of a bitch. I said before
Inspiring soldiers during PT
I'll bet you if there was some pussy up there on top of that obstacle you could get up there!
You climb obstacles like old people fuck.
I think you've got a hard-on!
Praise the soldiers
God has a hard-on for marines because we kill everything we see!
You are definitely born again hard!
OK, sex is omnipotent here, use sexual impotence and homosexuality to scold recruits, and then use the word hard on to motivate. The recruits were trained to become Pavlov’s dogs, and sex and violence became a conditioned reflex. The "teaching" results of the education squad leader are concentrated in the lower part. The soldiers call themselves Lust hog squad. Let's translate him into the estrus pig squad. They position themselves as "We are life takers and heart brokers!", this The positioning is quite accurate. They do one thing in Vietnam, Shoot! (shooting and doing), just like a pig in heat, which is very destructive and sexual.
There are only three female characters in FMJ, the first two are Hooker, and the last female sniper may also be Hooker. In fact, whether the sniper is Hooker or not, the sexuality of the scene is quite strong. Let's look at three scenes of three female characters.
The first scene of the first scene in the second half is from Vietnam, and then the prostitute in red enters the country shaking her ass. Red is both a symbol of blood and sex, and using color to imply both is the same thing. The camera was snatched by the Vietnamese gangster while the clown was bargaining. Like the gun, the camera is also a symbol of the male genitalia. This is what was shot in "Zoom". Both sex decisions in the film are related to male symbols such as cameras and guns. Because the camera (male symbol) was robbed, the clown's joyous journey was interrupted, and there was no have fun. Both sex decisions in the film are related to male symbols such as cameras and guns. The clown and the follower said: "Half these gook whores are serving officers in the Viet Cong. The other half have got TB Make sure you only fuck the ones that cough. ) Is as dangerous as in Vietnam, and it also implies that the last female sniper might also be a hooker.
In the second scene, before the final battle, the estrus pig class was interviewed in front of the cinema. A South Vietnamese soldier rode a small motorcycle and brought a prostitute. The cowboy is bargaining like this:
"Be glad to trade you some ARVN rifles. Never been fired and only dropped once."
The South Vietnamese soldiers immediately agreed to the price of $5, which was also the result of the education of the education squad leader. Rifles represents the masculinity of the South Vietnamese soldiers, echoing "Without my rifle I am useless", which means that the cowboy thinks that the South Vietnamese soldiers are useless in two ways. This is really a very powerful humiliation for the soldiers. This scene is quite interesting. The poster posted by the movie theater is a fictional Western movie "Mad Giang", which also corresponds to the John Wayne Terrier and the Indian Terrier. The position of the estrus pig class is to come to Vietnam to take lifes and break hearts, but we all know that they will be killed soon.
The last scene is quite exciting. The war films all have the final battle as a hero, and the estrus pig squad encounters a rather strange bitter battle, and the enemy is completely invisible. First, the eight-ball was brought down, Doc was also brought down to save, and then the Cowboys were killed. Later we learned that this was all done by a little girl sniper. OK, do you think the Marines will shoot? Only you can do it? Now it's the Viet Cong's turn to do you.
When the clown fired a shot at the sniper, the gun accidentally jammed, which also hinted that his Shoot was incompetent, or Rafterman killed the sniper. The joyful Rafterman twisted his butt back and forth to make a Teddy action you know. Here are two shoots. It's inseparable. Rock said: "No more boom-boom for this baby-san." Boom-Boom is also a pun, anyway, she can't do both, "She'sa dead meat" is still a pun. The stalk of puns was played by Kushen to the extent that it could not be added.
ANIMAL MOTHER: Okay. Let's get the fuck outta here.
Joker: What about her?
ANIMAL MOTHER: Fuck her.
Then the clown took the pistol and killed the sniper. Fuck was still a pun. This is really a classic line. What's more interesting is that in the scene where the cowboy died, the burning black wall in the background resembled the big black slate in "2001: A Space Odyssey". Remember the first thing that apes learned to do with tools after being inspired by the big black slate? Yes, it is violence. In the eyes of the cruel Kushen, people are nothing but apes, and nothing has changed for tens of thousands of years.
5. Target and shooter
The slogan of the Marines is: Every Marine is, first and foremost, a rifleman. All other conditions are secondary." This is why I insist that Pyle is a good Marine. He shoots! This advantage can cover everything. Shortcomings.
Of course, the education monitor also attaches great importance to shooting. During the shooting course, the monitor asked everyone if they knew Harles Whitman and Harvey Oswald. The former shot and killed 20 people 400 yards from a clock tower in Texas. He was a famous murderer in American history. The latter was the murderer who assassinated Kennedy. He shot a moving target with an old Italian rifle from 250 feet away, hitting two of three shots in six seconds. The education squad leader evaluated them as "Outstanding", they are all Marines, awesome! The composition of this scene is quite interesting. Behind the education squad leader is the M14 set up, and the recruits in front of him, suggesting that they are turning into weapons. Weapons, as long as they are accurate, it does not matter whether they are Americans or Vietnamese. This matter is under the control of the president, Congress and the Pentagon, not the education team leader. Pyle has Kubrick's stare for the first time here. Is he abnormal? In fact, everyone is not normal, Pyle found his target in the Marines. It can be seen from the back that he is extremely fascinated by rifles and takes care of the M14 as if it were his girlfriend.
6. Mickey Mouse-the subject of satire
The ending of "Full Metal Jacket" is in the burning city of Hue. After a bitter battle, the heavily armed marines are marching singing "Mickey mouse club March". The lyrics have been revised and two sentences have been added, which means that I think it is similar to "Bombing School" which we adapted from "School" when we were young.
Here we go a-marching and a-shouting merrily.
MICKEY MOUSE.
Who is marching coast to coast and far across the sea?
MICKEY MOUSE.
These two lyrics were modified by the Marines themselves. Who is marching? It's a Marine. Whoever came to Vietnam from the United States across the oceans is still a Marine. So who is Mickey Mouse? It's a Marine.
The meaning of Mickey Mouse in English is very rich. Used to refer to cheap, amateur, foolish, and waste of time. In military slang, Mickey Mouse specifically refers to the asshole-free things that the commander does in order to toss the soldiers. "FMJ" has a poster cover with Mickey Mouse version of the helmet, which represents Kushen's attitude towards the Vietnam War and the army. This is nonsense!
Mickey Mouse appeared in the movie three times, and they all corresponded strongly.
1. At the end of the first half of the film, the recruits march on the "USMC march"; the second half ends with the accompaniment of "Mickey mouse club March". The Marines correspond to Mickey mouse club.
2. The clown and Pyle made a lot of noise in "Head" and awakened the education monitor. He said: "What is this Mickey Mouse shit." Mickey Mouse here obviously means shit.
3. When the clown listened to the editor assigning tasks in the Stars and Stripes office, there were two Mickey Mouse dolls behind them, and the red banner hanging behind them said "First to go last to know--We will defend to the death your right to be misinformed." "This is a spoof to the Marine Corps reporter. What they said was "Last to know, first to go." The order changed and the meaning changed.
There is an interesting interview in the film. DOC learned about Lyndon Johnson. This buddy has a bad reputation, and even his fellow Texans is still complaining about him.
I will not send American boys eight or ten thousand miles around the world to do a job that Asian boys oughtta be doin' for themselves.
LBJ has said that they will not send Americans to solve their own problems for Asians, but what is the ruthless pig class doing now? This interview and the previous soldiers talking to themselves in front of the camera are basically a denial of all the high-sounding reasons for the United States to intervene in the Vietnam War. We might as well call this section the "soldier's voice."
Animal Mother: You think we waste gooks for freedom? This is a slaughter. If I'm gonna get my balls blown off for a word ... my word is "poontang."
This sentence corresponds to the previous "'ll bet you if there was some pussy up there on top of that obstacle you could get up there!" The education squad leader is always telling the truth.
Eight Ball: I mean ...they sort of took away our freedom and gave it to the, to the gookers, you know. But they don't want it. They'd rather be alive than free, I guess. Poor dumb bastards.
In the voice of the soldiers, the estrus pig squad denied the "Hello Vietnam" that was released during the brainwashing of the film. We must save freedom now at any cost ... or someday our own freedom will be lost. The fact is that the soldiers are not willing to come. The American soldiers have lost their freedom, the Vietnamese have lost their lives, and no one is free. If everything is "Mickey mouse shit" and everything is meaningless, but the meaningless death of soldiers is real, then who is messing around? That's right, they are the "They" who sent the soldiers here.
In Vietnam, all the boundaries have become blurred. For the Marines, Make love and War are the same thing. Mickey Mouse and John Wayne are the same thing.
7. Other
The so-called cinematic sense is caused by the rich lens language and rich details. The reason why Kushen became a god is because his lens language and the richness of details are compared with other first-class masters, making other masterpieces a TV series! This is no way, not even my favorite "Apocalypse Now". Therefore, the work of Lapiankushen is a very, very tiring thing. Even at this level, what I see is still the tip of the iceberg, and many places are still unclear.
- What is the purpose of the Vietnamese toothpaste advertisement posters appearing in the movie several times? Corresponding to the toothbrush of the news editor?
- What was written on the sign on the bombed building in the scene of the final battle? It must be of ulterior motives, but we don’t know how to understand Vietnamese.
- At the end of the first part, the education squad leader read the real name before the army, even Pyle reads the real name, but the clown and the cowboy did not read it. What's the point?
- The education monitor always carries one hand on his back. What is the purpose?
- When the education squad leader was killed, blood sprayed out from the front, and the wall behind was clean, while the front of Pyle's suicide shot was clean, and the blood and brains in the back crashed across the wall. What's the point?
There are many similar places. Each shot of Kushen has to take 30 shots. Even the clown and cowboy in the toilet talked about Pyle's mentality and took 30 shots. It can be said that each shot is worthy of fun. I feel more and more that Kubrick is really a god. I'm so tired from drawing a movie. It's absolutely abnormal to make this movie. No wonder his old man used his brain when he was a teenager.
bye!
