"Naked": What are you left

Some people say that the characters in Mike Lee's movies have one thing in common, that is, they either cannot give love or cannot accept love, and the focus of the director is to record their loveless state. I don’t think this applies to all of Li’s other works, but Johnny, the protagonist of "Naked", is a perfect fit. Johnny was not the porcupine who mishandled the distance and did bad things with good intentions from time to time, but was a cynic who was armed all over and repelled the outside world from thinking to behavior. The success of the film is largely due to such a role creation. David Huris's selfless interpretation made him finally win the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Johnny is a cultural person, and he has the difficulties of being a cultural person. He wanders on the streets. We call it "pursuing" in the voice of a cultural person. On the outside, in his 20s, he has a face that seems to be in his 40s. Psychologically, he is like a dead person in his 30s. Driven by his unique philosophy of life, he gave birth to confusing actions. In his personal view, the future is not important, because the specific anxiety he has at the end of the century is lingering, so everything is in vain in Johnny's view. In the film, Johnny used his eloquent eloquence, peddled his philosophy at midnight, and was busy talking nonsense to the poster poster, but none of the audience could understand him, let alone agree with him. Mike Lee mentioned in the interview that Johnny is actually an idealist. An idealist, once countered by reality and unable to resist, will inevitably be swallowed by frustration.

It is not difficult to find that the overall structure of the film is similar to that of a road film, and its integration into the specific context of the film is an Odyssey-like process. The difference is that Odysseus has found his way home, while the protagonist Johnny's journey from frustration is endless. Johnny's tossing and wandering on the streets of London also brought out a variety of characters. The editor separates the group of people in London from the real society, and gives them great abstraction and referential meaning. They use allegorical style to write about the current situation of modern society, and use a deep eye to examine people and the world. The relationship between the two, and endows the two with a bitter taste from beginning to end. Without a trace of warmth, even the call to return to humanity like "go home" finally ceased. The past cannot be reverted, and the dying heart cannot be revived.

Perhaps it is because the tone of the film is mostly dark nights, and those lonely figures appear to be more prominent. Urbanites use glamorous coats to wrap themselves during the day, but they never expected to reveal themselves in a bleak night. Loneliness is a virus that spreads freely, looking for its next host. The characters in "Naked" are mostly morbid, they are all Ye Guzhou in the sea, who can't get comfort, help, and no way out. Coupled men and women are playing cat-and-mouse games that look close together. When they are separated, they are chasing and going around; when they are together, they isolate themselves from one another in a resisting posture. The relationship between men and women maintains a delicate and weird balance. The unaccompanied man stationed at the window to imagine the future, without realizing that reality was passing fiercely through his fingers. The unaccompanied woman sticks to the vacant house, and the tragedy of old age marks the mark of time. A man has to appear as a tyrant in the bedtime to prove his existence and authority. In contrast, two of the women behaved like a humble beggar, eager and dependent on male compassion.

Similar to the London portrayed in "A Storm is Coming", as an international metropolis, it has strong material support, but it cannot bring people a sense of security. In "A Rainstorm Is Coming", London, as a relatively developed and civilized symbol, uses its open chest to hide the killing and tyranny, giving a false security, allowing people to relax their vigilance in a peaceful atmosphere, and finally recruit Can't stand the sudden violence. Violence in "Naked" is also unpredictable. Johnny was beaten at the end of the film, but the director deliberately moved the camera away from the scene to keep viewers away from the truth. Perhaps there is no truth at all. Pure violence, because there is no reason, will burn all the people passing by like the venomous sun. Without exception, there will be no innocent people. This is the more violent and terrifying way of existence. Similarly, there is a man in "Naked". Through parallel editing, the director allows him to intervene while Johnny is violent. This is the most symbolic role in the film. His appearance is like falling from the sky, and his image is also a tyrant character. Women are tempted by him, not only can't refuse him, but they are obedient, and even a little tougher can't do anything about it. In front of Johnny, a man with the same habit, he appeared to be much taller and stronger, like a devilish existence.

"Naked" is like a cold ghost, trying to extinguish the only gleam of fire deep in people's hearts. What will be left of people by then? Some people call this the greatest work of Mike Lee, because it is ruthless, deep, and entangled. Whether it is the greatest or not, different people have different opinions. However, it is necessary to look forward to Director Li's "Another Year" this year.
