Analysis of the Ultimate Editing Version-Pranks of Literary Faner

[This was written when I was a freshman, please be sure to forgive some of the dark history]

Is the watchman you watch still a 2 hour 42 minute movie version? Or a 186-minute director's cut version? If you feel that this is not the superhero blockbuster you imagined after watching the theatrical version, it is better to watch Spider-Man, then you can directly click the cross at the top of the page. Obviously, this style of work is not your tea, you Even more will not be interested in the story behind the scenes; if you feel unsatisfied after watching the theater version, it is strongly recommended that you watch this ultimate editing version-3 hours and 25 minutes-17 minutes longer than the director's editing version.

In other words, Zach Sneijder deleted more than 40 minutes of play. Below, I will list the deleted scenes one by one, and supplement the Watchmen film reviews I wrote before.

*Deleted scene*:
1. Rorschach fled after wounding a policeman at the crime scene where Comedian was killed. The first and second generations of Ye Xiao saw him on TV news while drinking and chatting, and he was listed as the most wanted criminal. Dan said an impressive sentence-He'll quit when he is dead.
This paragraph was deleted with reason. Many of the following paragraphs mentioned that Rorschach was a lonely anti-socialist, never compromise-this sentence also often appeared in his diary. Since there are repeated hints later, this scene that is not much related to the main line can be deleted.
2. Some fragments of Luo Xiaji——after visiting the second generation of Ye Xiao.
This fruitless night, the first person I visited, disappointed me a bit. War is about to break out soon. Millions of people will die in disease and pain. Why is this person’s death more important than these million people? Because there are bad guys and good guys, and bad guys must be punished, even in the face of the end of the world...I will not compromise on this point. But there are so many people worthy of compensation...but so little time...I
personally think that Luo Xiaji is the most romantic and poetic passage in the whole film. The beautiful and profound text is recited by Rorschach's deep voice, which immediately makes it sharp. The cold picture adds a bit of softness, although the tone is dark and sad, but this does not prevent the director from showing the romantic feelings of the end times.
3. After Luo Xiaji, the deleted main part-the black freighter (the black freighter) appeared for the first time (the specific content will be discussed later).
4. The picture of the black cargo ship ends-it turned out to be a black teenager reading a cartoon next to the newsstand. This teenager was the one who had been scanned during the nuclear explosion in New York. The newsstand owner was holding him at the time. These two people will appear many times with the black cargo ship and Rorschach in the deleted scene, and will bring the latest news of the changes in the world pattern.
5. Rorschach without a mask appeared for the first time, waiting at the newsstand for "the New Frontiersman"-Rorschach is certainly considered a "marginal man"! Note the sign he is holding-the End is NIGH. In the theater version, Rorschach's first appearance seems to be at Comedian's funeral.
6. Rorschach went to see Dr. Manhattan, only one sentence was deleted from the diary-Even Adrian Veidt, possible homosexual-mentioning Ozman Dias' sexual orientation.
Why delete this? Do you want the audience to discover this secret in the hints of the scene behind?
7. The second generation of Sigui Laurie and Dan were monitored by government agents when they were dating-the government must ensure that Dr. Manhattan's relationship life does not have any problems.
8. At Comedian's funeral, when Adrian recalled him, the camera briefly scanned Manhattan and Laurie, where they met for the first time. The two looked at each other and smiled, laying the groundwork for the tragedy that followed.
Since this paragraph was heavily portrayed in Manhattan's own memories, in order to avoid repetition, this scene must be deleted.
9. The second generation of Ye Xiao's memories of Comedian. In the theater version, we only saw the airship stop above the noisy crowd, and Comedian jumped down and shot without hesitation in the face of the curse. What is going on all this? In the edited version, we know that due to the presence of the watchman, the police officers went on strike, causing the citizens to be dissatisfied (or fearful) towards the masked volunteers. At the beginning, Xiaojiang and Yexiao II had been persuading the people to retreat, but the angry people shouted, "You can't represent the law, we need normal police! Don't have righteous police!", and started throwing sundries. The laughter fought back angrily after being hit, unlike what we saw in the theater version.
Is it a bit similar to TDK's connotation? When people no longer need heroes, those who once protected them will be ruthlessly regarded as the number one threat to society.
10. The newsstand scene, the night owl generation buys newspapers, and the black cargo ship comics appear for the second time.
11. After Dr. Manhattan disappeared, the black cargo ship appeared for the third time.
12. The agent asked Laurie—have you quarreled with Manhattan? The implication-did you make him sad so he abandoned the earth?
Laurie: None of your f**king business.
Agent: It’s my business when you get paid from the government but don’t work. (The only link between Manhattan and mankind is Laurie. Of course, the government doesn't want to see the doctor go wrong in the relationship, and naturally regards Laurie as comforting the doctor...)
Laurie immediately knocked the agent's head on the table-what you said is equivalent Just call me a whore!
The agent lighted a cigarette and started smoking, which reminded Laurie of the burning map of the United States-Manhattan left, the end is not far away.
... In the following scene, Laurie played a little trick to get rid of the agent's tracking entanglement-maybe it has nothing to do with the main line, the theater version was deleted completely.
13. Continue the newsstand and the black cargo ship. We met Seymour, the ketchup worker who appeared in the last scene.
14. After the end of this black cargo ship, a group of important characters will be drawn out-street gangs, that is, the group that Dan and Laurie gorgeous Li Haibian immediately after they appear... This time they appear to be harassing teenagers who read comics. The reason why these little people are important is because they...look at 15.
15. Rorschach escaped from prison. The gangsters around the newsstand were particularly upset about this, thinking that the Ye Xiao generation had worked with Rorschach, they planned to find Ye Xiao to vent their anger. So... the heroic Ye Xiao generation (who was talking on the phone with the Sigui generation before, as if it was the last farewell) died in the hands of...a mob!
The soundtrack is derived from "Angry Bull" (Martin Scorsese). In the beautiful melody of "Country Knight", the Ye Xiao generation is brutally beaten to death. The heroes are late, there is nowhere to rely, and the tragic atmosphere of the beautiful era is gone, making the film even more depressing and desperate.
16. Rorschach and Dan went to the Antarctic to find Ozmandias to settle their accounts. The newsstand scene appeared. The big headline "Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan" in the newspaper marked another step closer to the end. In the penultimate scene, a black cargo ship appears.
17. When Adrian announced that he had detonated the nuclear bomb 35 minutes ago, the last scene of the black cargo ship finally came. The comic ends and the earth is destroyed. Before the blue light of the nuclear explosion, the boy and the newsstand owner were surprised to find that they were called by the same name.
There will be no Newsstand section anymore-because New York is also gone.

*Black cargo ship*
Well, in the 40 minutes that were deleted, the black cargo ship comics accounted for at least half an hour.
What does this comic say?
This is definitely not a superhero comic, because his tone itself is darker than the watchman, no matter from the weird and twisted style or the tangled horror plot-like a bloody setting sun, a burning sea, a murderous black cargo ship passing by , The ship was covered with skeletons, and the protagonist dragged his nearly collapsed body and rationally to survive in this desperate scene.
——Even if it's an animation, it's really scary, and it's definitely worthy of R grade. For example, those with broken arms, swelled and exploded corpses (with intestines bursting out), heads that are always taken by the protagonist but tortured by natural forces, and weird rafts built from corpses (the protagonist thinks this can add enough to the raft) Buoyancy)! The black sea, greedy sharks, seagulls pecking at corpses, plus the protagonist’s weather-beaten face and dead man’s twisted face—enough enough, too frightening.
Simply put, after the protagonist experienced the raid of the black cargo ship (only he survived), he decided to build a raft home to remind people of the invasion of the black cargo ship. This is almost his monologue.
However, from the divinely talking lines and slightly crazy imagination, it is not difficult to see the signs of the male protagonist's physical and mental collapse, and it also makes people faintly guess the ending.
No spoiler here, I suggest you still watch this animation, although it is very dark, but it is very closely related to the theme of the watchman.
I personally think that there are three sentences that best reflect the director’s intentions:
1. Hope is horrible;
2. Realize dreams by riding the corpse;
3. Noble intentions led me to brutality, in the name of love... I can’t remember it anymore. The world I want to save.
Listen, does it seem to describe Ozymandias? His "Sacrifice Thousands of People Rescue Plan" is so similar to the story of the black cargo ship! It's just that the latter narrows the salvation to the protagonist's wife and daughter into a city. But they have the same nature and the same consequences. This utopia based on lies will eventually be a tragedy. The protagonist boarded the black cargo ship at the end, thinking that he was as evil as this ship; then, even if most of the people on the earth were saved, would classmate O be innocent?

*Details* The
meticulously tampered history and ubiquitous Easter eggs, probably only Alan Moore and Zach have such wisdom.
1. Comedian's room number is 3001. When Adian fights with him, the word 1 is smashed, so there is 300! Zach is a "narcissist"~!
2. The last channel that Comedian locked in, played a perfume advertisement, produced by Witt Company, Nostalgia (nostalgia). This perfume advertisement appeared many times later.
3. Ozymandias-the king of kings, is actually a-GAY! Except for Rorschach's bluntly speaking, what Zach wants us to see is the "Boys" folder that Dan found when Dan hacked into his computer. In addition, at the beginning of the movie, when Adian revealed his identity, the bar behind him-the famous 54 club in the 70s-was known for being gay-friendly and also hinted at his sexual orientation. Rotten girls want to YY? Well, enjoy YY, they are almost out.
4. The retirement dinner of the Sigui generation will be set up in the "Last Supper" style. The two masked volunteers on the far right of the table... Please keep your eyes open and see what they are doing... The rotten girl should be excited again NS.
5. Remember the two people who died on the street in the opening movie? In front of them was Rorschach's sign. These two people are the reporters about to expose the Watergate incident. However, in the parallel world, they were killed by Rorschach first, so Nixon began the third term of the presidency in an unprecedented way.
6. Nixon's meeting room is very similar to the war room in Kubrick's "Doctor Strange Love". Tribute + satire.
7. The pile of screens Adrian looked at at the Antarctic base. According to reliable information, the screen includes "First Blood 2", an Apple 1984 advertisement shot by Ridley Scott, the 1980 science fiction film "Soul Search", Addicted to Love, Crazy Max 2, Cat and Mouse, Marvin the Martian, the Nixon campaign show, the popular 80s drama Jade Face Flying Dragon, pornography (Khan~), and the 300 in 1962-Zach pays tribute to the 300 again!
8. In August 1945, people on Times Square celebrated the end of World War II. The photos of the sailors and nurses kissing affectionately turned into a kiss between the "profile" and the nurse. The two women had a tragic ending. They were killed by anti-comrades. "Lesbian Whores" is written on the wall;
9. The picture of the girl putting flowers in the muzzle comes from "Flowers and Muzzle" in 1967. Before Nixon came to power, he promised to end the Vietnam War, but after he was elected, he broke his promise, so the students began to strike and demonstrate.
10. Other obvious hints and tampering include-Khrushchev and Castro's joint military parade (the Cuban missile crisis is approaching), the assassination of Kennedy is the Laugher, and Andy Warhol's pop art exhibition The naked man (Andy is Gay~), Armstrong’s famous joke when he landed on the moon...
11. The fate of the heroes mentioned in the opening of the film gave us detailed answers in Rorschach’s diary, including being involved in the cloak. The "bill" killed in the revolving door, the mothman arrested for alcoholism, the silk ghost generation with a terrible private life.
12. The edited version mentioned the "Keen Act"-Keen Act-Nixon enacted this bill after he took office, requiring masked volunteers to either retire or work for the government.

*Music*
1. The lyric-like singing voice of the opening title comes from Bob Dylan's "the Times they are a-changing", slow and sad. The connotation is change, but it is full of memories of the past, good and painful, reflecting the change and unchanging of the world.
2. When Dr. Manhattan appeared on the battlefield in Vietnam, the soundtrack was the majestic Valkyrie (Wagner~). This piece of music also appeared in Coppola's "Apocalypse Now", when the US army was attacking by helicopter.
3. Comedian’s funeral, the soundtrack is the famous "Sound of Silence". Ironically, the person who wrote this song expressed the pain of the Americans after Kennedy's assassination in the song, but in that world, Comedian was the real culprit.
4. As mentioned earlier, the background music for the tragic death of the Ye Xiao generation is from the "Angry Bull". However, what is staged here is not a boxing match, but the most tragic ending of a generation of heroes.

*Comment*
Few people can make an R-rated film so elegant and literary.

The beginning of Bob Dylan's "The World Is Changing" opened the prelude to the violent chapter, sad and slightly casual humming, accompanied by a series of shocking social customs-the bloodbath of the Vietnam War, the army's treatment of the flower girl The shooting, the large number of nuclear bombs displayed in the Soviet military exercise... As if slowly revealing the dark corner of the world, the desperate atmosphere is wrapped in what seems to be the old film, and the taste of the end is now more specialized. It belongs to Dylan's romance.

The world is changing.

At the beginning, the ambitious heroes had the American dream to defend justice, but finally lost to humanity after seeing the world through. From the dollar bill man being hit by a bank robber because he was swept into the gate with his cloak, to Tian Exia being arrested for drinking, to the silhouette on the tragic death bed, the climax is nothing more than the cold and disdainful comedian who hid in the dark after Kennedy was shot. Looking back, his casual expression tells the biggest cold joke in the parallel world. History and imagination are so perfect at this moment, and the mischievous adaptation makes such unreal history ridiculous. It seems that this kind of fate is the original trajectory of the world-let a fallen hero who suddenly realized that the world cannot be saved. Assassinate the ruler who made the American Dream Bubble. The bubble shattered at this moment, letting the world reveal its hideousness hidden under the glitz.

Masked vigilantes watched the world. Watchmen was born before the clock of the doomsday, taking over the crumbling society and becoming the only protector of people, but they did not want to be eroded by the darker truth while facing the darkness. The first comedian to react, with a bit of self-deprecating self-deprecating "Broken cans and broken". He shot and killed the demonstrators and pregnant women (with his children), he was addicted to alcohol and tobacco, tried to molest his teammates, and fell out with everyone. He was so desperately decadent because he saw through the fate that he should have known long ago— —Superheroes have insisted on that false belief from the beginning. They are above the law and order and are obsessed with maintaining the ideals of the world, but no one has ever thought that if the world can no longer be saved, who will save themselves?

Who watches the Watchmen?

When the heroes bowed their heads to human nature, this war between justice and evil suddenly turned into a vain and lonely struggle in the dark. Once Lingyun's aspirations were shattered by tragic reality, the messenger of justice who hobbled in his dreams, facing the dark side of human nature that could not be eliminated, chose to withdraw from the stage of history. To be precise, this is not their own choice-any hero faces almost the same fate-from being suspected to being admired, to being abandoned by the feared people after the mission is completed, those they are trying to protect with their lives Object.

Everything is as Joker said. All heroes are very similar to villains. Although they are saving the world, they cannot escape the fate of being swept out "as lepers". What people need are heroes who show up to help in times of crisis. When the crisis is over, they naturally return to the right track. The worship of heroes turns into a fear of power. Those past heroic deeds have become a declaration of potential threats to most people.

So the comedian smiled heartlessly, and sarcastically threw out a sentence to the puzzled second-generation Ye Xiao-"Look, the American dream has come true."

The hero is nowhere to be found. Ye Xiao and Sigui can't extricate themselves from being immersed in memories. They are not so much nostalgia as a condemnation of the times; their descendants return to normal life, avoiding their fears, and cautiously not touching the past; Ozmandy Yass' ambitions have gone beyond the scope of ordinary people's understanding; Dr. Manhattan, in the face of the quietly coming nuclear threat, no longer has the motivation to save the world.

A sentence from a comedian several years ago finally exposed the essence of the doctor-you don't care about humans at all! Yes, when you become a god and have nothing to do with human beings, what else is worthy of nostalgia for this earth full of ugly human nature? Therefore, when the innovative plan of "killing 15 million people and saving the world" was exposed, Dr. Manhattan cooperated unexpectedly. This is simply the greatest prank in the history of mankind-when humans unanimously point the finger at once heroes, the world is in unprecedented harmony. The era of heroism was wiped out with the dazzling blue light of the nuclear explosion. When 15 million innocent lives disappeared forever after the conspiracy, everything was cleared, and the utopia above the ruins seemed to rekindle hope.

People survived under the protection of the watchmen, but they were eventually destroyed. The only way to save the world turned out to be death.

Rorschach couldn't figure this out. This violent hero who doesn’t look pleasing to anyone, this “anti-socialist”, step by step to trace the truth of the death of his old friend, step by step to expose the conspiracy of Ozmandias, and at the same time implicated the tragedy and the dark age. Comedy allows viewers to witness the cruelty and romance of Sin City. The anger exploded at the moment when Dr. Manhattan decided to keep a secret. Faced with God's compromise, he unceremoniously said: "If you care about it in the first place, nothing will happen." Rorschach, who never compromised, became the last victim. What is ridiculous is that this is also for the peace of the world.

But mankind needs a new utopia after all, even if it is so fragile based on lies. The earth is finally saved, and everything seems to be attributed to the plan devised by the "smartest man" and his impeccable robber logic.

"King of Kings" Ozmandias, what did he think while standing on the ruins? The pride of changing the course of history, or the melancholy if something has been lost? It doesn't matter anymore, because everyone alive gets what they want. The love between the second generation of Ye Xiao and the second generation of Sigui is logical, but the doctor avoids another "not so complicated galaxy", and the world has been long-awaited for peace. Not long ago, the death of 15 million people became a reality." The episode of "The Great Unity of All Mankind". Destruction brings salvation, and destruction creates an ideal society that heroism cannot achieve.

But everything will never end. The appearance of Luo Xia Ji at the end of the movie hints at a more sad and chaotic future. Even the omnipotent Dr. Manhattan can't do something-change human nature. It just so happens that human nature is the source of sin. We are temporarily saved, but it does not represent future happiness. Perhaps this cold joke is the best irony for conceited modern people.

Zach Sneijder's dark and romantic style makes the pictures of night rain, ice and snow, and poor streets and alleys unique in the end times. The gloomy color and the never clear sky set off the gloominess of the film, making people's mood fall heavily from beginning to end. Some sparkling little details are worthy of praise, such as the fascinating narration of Rorschach; the figure of Dr. Manhattan reflected in Armstrong’s helmet when he landed on the moon; and the tampered classic post-war photos, all of which show the director’s little wisdom. People sigh the ingenuity of the welding of history and imagination.

The two most fascinating details are that when the nuclear explosion device was activated, the blue electric light in the instrument suddenly shrank in the dial. At this time, the hour hand was pointing to 12 o'clock and one minute away. It is associated with the clock of doomsday that runs through the whole film. The hint is self-evident, and in the previous Watch screen, the minute hand has been dangerously approaching 12 o'clock. At this point, it is better to translate Watchmen into "Watch Man". The ink test chart scattered from the purse also symbolizes the failure of Rorschach's personal resistance.

The second detail is the smiley face logo of the comedian. It has a little red from beginning to end. It seems to continue the satirical style of the owner when looking at the world with a grin. This tragedy started with a smiley face stained with blood and ended with a smiley face stained with tomato juice. In other words, this is a new beginning, and the tragic fate of mankind has not ended.

The watchman's action drama is the continuation of Zach in "300"-fast and slow editing, which seems to be the new fashion of violent aesthetics he has led. But the action scene is just the spice of this serious R-rated film. After all, like the Black Knight, it can't be regarded as a superhero movie, but more like an urban epic. After all, the original work won the Hugo Award, and the movie is certainly not tacky. Therefore, it is not so much an action movie as it is a literary and artistic movie with a bit of blood. It does not seem to leave much hope for human beings, but it makes people hopelessly fascinated by the darkness and the night. Group of people. This is probably what the world is like.

*Others*
In fact, the theater version has very well expressed everything that Zach wants the audience to see. This ultimate editing version can be regarded as a gift to movie fans-the content is richer and fuller, the depiction angle is more, and it is shown from all levels. The picture of the end times.
I am very happy to see such a work in this era of rampant Twifan. I am very happy that Hollywood has such a talent as Zach Sneijder (Khan~). I am very happy to have an Alan Moore on the other side of the world, and he contributes. In a comic that won the Hugo Award, he made mankind once again deeply reflect on it.
Glad, we have watchmen to watch.

Watchmen quotes

  • Sally Jupiter: [on her daughter, Laurie] She blames me for her career, but what else would she have been? A housewife?

  • Adrian Veidt: I don't mind being the smartest man in the world, I just wish it wasn't this one.
