Without humanity without everything

I think it should be the highest level so far.

I have never dared to write this film review, because I really like this movie so much, any line in any scene in it is worth savoring. Director Wes Anderson's mother is an archaeologist, and his brother is a university professor. Wes anderson, who grew up in a good educational environment, is neither good nor difficult. Wes University chooses to study philosophy, so Wes’ movies always show people the life philosophy of various characters in complex environments. There are no rules and regulations of the film academy, but some are detailed descriptions of life, careful study of history, and carefulness of the characters' personalities. Wes's talent is to allow people to penetrate the character from a detail, coupled with a little humor, expressions and words are just right. M. Gustave is an exquisite businessman, but he is not the kind of businessman who has no bottom line and is selfish. He dressed up every morning, sprayed on perfume, and greeted every guest in the hotel with full energy. But in fact, he lives in the same small room as the employees, and there are a few simple books on the shelf. The only difference is that there are several bottles of perfume on his dressing table. M. Gustave was considered a wealthy person at the time, and he was often in and out of the upper class. He was very popular among celebrities, but in this environment he was more self-disciplined and able to restrain his desires. Will not greedily plunder. Even, he was full of sympathy, and he asked Zero to give the remaining change to the disabled shoe boy at the entrance of the hotel. Man is a complex animal. From M.Gustave, we can not only see the exquisite side of his shuttle in the complicated upper class, but also the humble side of his joint duty with the bottom of the hotel. M. Gustave will preach to the hotel staff at dinner every day (although not many people listen, because everyone is rushing to eat), but it does not prevent him from finishing the words and reading the poems.

M.Gustave interprets his human nature everywhere from beginning to end. In fact, human nature is complicated. There is no clear good and no clear bad. Perhaps this is the attraction of M.Gustave. He can cope with this in a hotel. High-class people can use their status to protect a lobby boy in a hotel while on the road, and they can also discuss escape from a murderer in prison. In his mind, there is no completely good person nor completely bad person. This is what Wes wants to show. The good person and the bad person are not based on his past actions, nor on the environment he is in, nor simply distinguish people based on the zodiac signs. What really determines a person's behavior is the role that a person plays in the relationship, not a person's personality. When M.Gustave treats others, he doesn't put people in some rules first, but really touches them. For example, when interviewing Zero, Zero's education background and work experience are all 0, but M.Gustave still let him pass the interview and become a Lobby Boy. When Zero asked M.Gustave: Were you ever a looby boy Sir. M.Gustave bypassed this topic and sent Zero. Perhaps M. Gustave saw Zero as if he saw his own shadow. He used to escape from the war without any family members, and went to a hotel or other low-level work to start a little bit until now. The experience from the bottom up may make M.Gustave feel more human complexity, so he can better understand the sentence in the sermon: "Rudeness is merely the expression of fear, people fear they won't get what they want. The most dreadful and unattractive person only needs to be loved, and they will open up like flower."

M.Gustave is also very admirable that he can insist on being himself in any environment, and his heart will not be influenced by the environment. All the experiences he will feel are just experiences, leaving no trace of change on him. On the contrary, he will influence others with his own principles and morals. Even in prison, he will do pre-dinner sermons and attach his own poems to employees like in a hotel. He will deliver breakfast to the prisoners in the hotel’s way of delivering meals, which is obviously an overnight meal, but he will say: "warm and nourished this morning". Prisoners have never been treated like this. Seeing M. Gustave who came to deliver the food is like seeing an alien. When he saw the prison escape picture, he praised the painter: "great artistic promise". In fact, the painter is a bald uncle prisoner with simple tattoos. Uncle's love for painting can be seen from the tattoo on his body. , May be bored in prison and paint on his own body, if not in prison, he might become an artist. After being praised by M.Gustave, he looked at the people on both sides unnaturally. Maybe he hadn't been praised for a long time. After hearing M.Gustave's praise, he showed a childish expression of shyness. I like this lens very much. This lens is like telling us that everyone has a shining side. In the eyes of M.Gustave, there is no difference between good and bad, and treat everyone sincerely.

The pursuit of beauty is also an indispensable part of human nature. Agatha, who makes Mendl's desserts, although the appearance is flawed, she makes cakes with care, and delivers them to the hotel by bicycle before dawn every morning. This is also my favorite scene. Agatha's daily life is like the background music played by Lute and the early morning in a European town. This is already beautiful, and all the extravagant modifications are superfluous. Her beauty is also reflected in her being neither humble nor overbearing in front of M.Gustave, talking and laughing happily. Take the risk with Zero to get back the oil painting, and calm down even when he sees the person who wants to kill him. So beauty can affect others. Even the guards in the prison can't bear to cut Mendl's for fear of ruining beauty.

In the end, the naughty grandson finally sat quietly beside his grandfather eating pizza, as if nothing had happened at the beginning. The oil painting that Zero almost saved his life before was hung in the lobby of the hotel decades later. No one would have imagined how many people died for this painting. No matter what you experience will be forgotten by time. But at any time, in any environment, what is remembered is humanity, which is what this movie wants to convey.

You see there are still faint glimmers of civilization left in this barbaric slaughterhouse, that was once known as humanity.

It's still Wes Anderson's iconic retro tone, sweet soundtrack, and neurotic cold humor. Unlike its predecessors, it is not so casual and loose, "The Grand Hotel" has a compact story, layered layers of cocoons, and a bit of a "heavy taste". Perhaps only Wes Anderson can make a story of mixed murder, prison escape, and weapon fighting so happy.

The Grand Budapest Hotel quotes

  • M. Gustave: How does one come by front row aisle seats for a first night at the Opera Toscana with one day's notice? How does one arrange a private viewing of the tapestry collection at the Royal Saxon Gallery? How does one secure a corner table at Chez Dominique on a Thursday?

    [to Ivan, on the telephone]

    M. Gustave: Ivan, darling, it's Gustave, hello!... Well, I was until about five minutes ago. We've taken it upon ourselves to clear out in a hurry, if you see what I mean... Well, through a sewer, as it happens... Exactly! Listen, Ivan, I'm sorry to cut you off, but we're in a bit of a bind. This is an official request. I'm formally calling on the special services of...

  • M. Gustave: I'm not angry with Serge; you can't blame someone for their basic lack of moral fiber. He's a frightened little yellow-bellied coward. It's not his fault, is it?

Zero: I don't know, it depends.

    M. Gustave: Well, you can say that about most anything, "it depends". Of course it depends.

Zero: Of course it depends, of course it depends.

    M. Gustave: Yes, I suppose you're right; of course it depends. However, that doesn't mean I'm not going to throttle the little swamp rat.
