In Brazil, there is a "City of God", but there is neither a God nor a city.
The "City of God" is nothing but a slum in the southwestern part of the Brazilian capital Rio de Janeiro. The Guanabara state government established this slum in 1960 to transfer the poor from the city center to the suburbs. The focus of the movie "City of God" is precisely the history of the rise and fall of gangs that occurred in this slum in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. The film is adapted from the novel of the same name published by Paul Lins in 1997. Paul himself moved to live in this slum when he was seven years old. Fortunately, he finally escaped and became a writer. Of course, what brought him great reputation and career achievement was precisely what he did his best to escape from, flooded with Drugs, gangs, and the "City of God". It's really ironic!
