Cast by Anna Kendrick, Toni Collette, Daniel Dae Kim, and Shamier Anderson, “Stowaway” doesn't tell story about the claustrophobic sci-fi theme, but rather the morals and ethics of survival. Three crew, Kendrick, Collete and Kim starts as a team of pure-bred engineers trained and perfected for their mission to Mars in which they'll create a sustainable living environment and report their findings. Collete is the commander Marina, while Kim's David and Kendrick's Zoe tackle the botanist and medical duties respectively . David's research, the natural creation of oxygen, is particularly vital to the sustainability of the crew's mission.
The mission turns out disastrous when one injured man Michael (Shamier Anderson) is found hidden in the ceiling tiles and the ship's carbon dioxide filter is destroyed, leaving all on board at a dire dilemma. Ultimately, though, “Stowaway” feels like a frustrating cry into the void.
The makings are all there for a fascinating character study, which “Stowaway” more closely resembles than a sci-fi thriller. The film also suffers from really slow pacing.... Actually nothing happens for a lot of the film. Yet the audience never really see or experience a sense of urgency as every role seems to be happy to remain pretty calm about things for the most part. Sadly though, as well as a lack of battles and swords, this film also lacked the compelling story and character details that made those other films so interesting.
