The first half is the plot of the movie, including spoilers, if you understand the plot, you can skip it:
Maureen, with psychic talent, worked as a private buyer for Kyra in Paris after the death of his twin brother Lewis, essentially looking for opportunities to contact the soul of his deceased brother.
During the period, Maureen went to Kyra's apartment and met Ingo, a German. Ingo claimed to be Kyra's boyfriend and was about to break up with Kyra. Afterwards, Maureen's mobile phone received a text message from an unknown number, and the other party took control of Maureen's actions. Although Maureen was wary, he still chatted with the other party, and even almost regarded the other party as the soul of his deceased brother.
Once, Maureen went to Kyra's apartment to give her the jewels bought for her, but was surprised to find Kyra's body with obvious stab wounds on the back. In shock, she saw that the door at the end of the corridor was half-hidden, the yellow light flashed, and there was a rhythmic noise, which finally turned into an inexplicable crackle, causing the frightened Maureen to rush out of the apartment.
Maureen called the police. She claimed that she left the jewelry she bought at Kyra's house and ran away in a panic. Afterwards, Maureen still received a text message from an unknown number, forcing her to tell the police about the text message. The unknown number also told Maureen that "he" had the spare key to her room and had put the jewelry in Maureen's house (Maureen found out that it was!). Later, she received a note under the seam of her door, which read "Room 329 of Crowne Plaza Hotel".
After that, Maureen brought the jewelry to Room 329. She heard the sound of the door opening, and then slowly raised her head with an anxious expression, but she did not show any surprise. Then the most weird shot of the film appeared. The camera was shooting at the air, and then the elevator door opened by itself, and then the hotel door opened and closed automatically, as if someone had gone out, but the audience couldn't see anyone. Immediately after Ingo walked out of Room 329, the police in ambush tried to arrest him, but he broke free, and he fired a shot at the police.
At the end of the movie, the scene changed back to Maureen and her sister-in-law. Maureen claimed that the police had arrested Ingo. The sister-in-law asked her if she would stay with her for a while, and Maureen agreed. In the yard of his sister-in-law’s house, Maureen met his sister-in-law’s new boyfriend Erwin. Erwin thought he had replaced Lewis and felt a little apologetic. In addition, he said he could feel that Lewis's soul was here. After Erwin left, Maureen sat alone. The audience could see a spirit body appeared behind Maureen, and then the spirit body disappeared, leaving only a hanging cup, falling, and her sister-in-law went downstairs after hearing the sound. Maureen told her that the glass might be Erwin He was knocked off after entering the door.
At the end, Maureen went to Oman to find her friends. At the hotel/residence in Oman, the weird phenomenon happened again, and Maureen saw the glass hanging in the air. The glass was broken and Maureen began to ask:
M: Lewis? Are you here? (Boom!) (One click here means yes, two clicks mean no, as mentioned in the first part of the movie)
M: Have you been waiting for me? (Bang!)
M: Are you at peace? (Bang!)
M: Thank you.
M: Are you not at peace? (Bang!)
M: Are you playing with me?
M: Do you mean harm? (Bang! Bang!)
M: I don't know you.
M: Who are you? Who are you?
M: Lewis, is it you? Lewis, is it you?
M: Or is it just me? (Bang!)
After speaking the last line, Maureen seemed to suddenly wake up to something (surprised expression, take a breath, then exhale, relax), the movie flashes white, and the character (yang) (guang) name (dian) (ying) ),Finish.
Maureen experienced the grief and murder of the loss of her brother, and finally left all this and came to Oman. All these seem to be the complete plot of the movie, but is this really the case?
To be honest, I didn't comment after watching the movie. A question that my mind has been thinking about: Who left room 329 before Ingo? The reason why I have been struggling with this problem is that no matter how many supernatural or inexplicable content has appeared before, the first three quarters of the film are still linear narratives, but the film seems to be broken here, and we have never seen Maureen from beginning to end. Walked out of room 329. This makes Maureen's appearance in the cafe a bit like an inception space, just like in a dream we don't know where the dream started, and we don't know where "this" Maureen comes from. Of course, one explanation is that Maureen left room 329 safely and was arrested by the police after Ingo's arrest, but this seemed too simple and tedious.
Another explanation based on personal intuition is that Maureen was killed in Room 329, and it was Maureen's spiritual body that entered the elevator and left. After all, Ingo, a person who can kill because of a breakup (at least this is the reason given in the movie) is too dangerous. We have seen him take a gun (?) and shoot (?) the police, but have we seen him arrested? Maybe Maureen's own imagination is the only thing after entering the cafe. Just like Erwin's retelling of Lewis, Maureen's brother actually believes that the soul will stay for a while after death. So, will it be handled like many similar movies? Way, that is, the protagonist does not realize that he is dead?
Especially in the dialogue between Maureen and a certain soul at the end of the movie, what does it mean to say "Or is it just me?" at the end? It seems that there is ambiguity in the original English, and the Chinese is even more difficult to translate. I found a forum about this film. Based on the speeches in the forum, I roughly summarized the following meanings:
https://taylorholmes.com/2017/04/21/the-ending-of-kristen-stewarts-personal-shopper-movie-explained/
The first type: She is asking the ghost if it is her brother, or is it just her wanting it to be her brother, or unable to accept that it is. Accept it is not.
(Example, in the English context, people will ask "Did you see that, or was/is it just me?", "Did you hear that, or was/is it just me?" Did you see that, or Am I wrong?)
The unreasonable part of this explanation is that through the previous questioning (Are you playing with me?), the heroine seems to have discovered that the soul cannot be trusted. If it is the above explanation, and the last shot, Maureen suddenly wakes up. Inconsistent (Why do you believe that the last hit, the spirit body is telling the truth, and what does Maureen understand based on this explanation?).
The second type: Are you really here, or is it just me here, or is it just me here in this room? The further explanation given by the forum speaker is that because the soul does not exist, there is only Maureen alive in this space. His brother wanted to tell him, stop looking for his soul, let it go, and live his own life. I think this explanation is still hard to believe, and the reason is the same as above.
The third type: or is it just me, this is the soul of "myself" (Maureen). Those who hold this view think that the whole movie is about the separation of the human spirit and substance. In the hotel room, Maureen's "soul" (or whatever, can only be called that for the time being) partly separated from her body, so when the protagonist finally asked her question, she responded with her own "soul". This view seems to be unable to combine the broken part of the hotel with the ending. In addition, usually we don't think that the soul can partly leave the body and partly stay in the body. In the end, the protagonist wakes up to this point, which does not seem very reasonable.
The fourth type: or is it just me, (this happens) because of "myself" (Maureen). Meaning, when Maureen asked or is it just me? At that time, the spirit body gave an affirmative answer, that is, no one fooled you (Are you playing with me?), but you still have a high level of clarity. Actually you (Maureen) are already in a state of soul, but you have not yet realized it yourself.
Personally, I prefer the fourth point of view, which explains why the film is cut off, and why the heroine finally took a breath, surprised, and then relieved. Some people also said that Maureen went to find her friend (or boyfriend). The person had always said that he had been busy at work during the video call, but why did the heroine leave first when the heroine arrived in Oman, leaving only a piece of paper Article, said that Maureen should go to him, and only need to bring the least things to set off, and then said that the whole journey is Spartan, but the hostess chose to embark on this journey, which seems to imply that this is something Kind of soul journey.
In short, I personally think that this kind of contradictory movie is more interesting and there is room for aftertaste. Of course, it is impossible to find a satisfactory answer. Even if we know whether Maureen is dead, there are still many unexplainable aspects in the movie, such as who is the "person" who sent the text message, is it really Ingo? Who put the jewelry in the hostess's house, and how to do it. The text message claims to have a backup key, how did you get it; and the text message seems to be in charge of the heroine's actions. Is someone monitoring her? And what does the sound and light behind the door when Kyra's body was found? Is the soul appearing in the backyard kitchen of the sister-in-law’s brother? Maybe these are all kinds of contradictions deliberately created by the director, and maybe no one will know what the story means, but at least I think this movie is not just what he looks like.
