I believe that many people are confused after watching the movie. I will try to answer three questions: 1. Who is the real protagonist of the movie? 2. Why have the rules of the game changed? 3. Why is the title Serenity?
Who is the real hero of the movie?
Most of the shots in the movie portray Baker's life on the island. Until the end, I discovered that the real protagonist is his son Partrick. The so-called real or illusion can only be found from Partrick's perspective. Baker is a character created in the game by his son missing his father. Because Partrick suffers from domestic violence, he hopes to be protected by his father, hoping that his father can show up to help him escape from the sea of suffering. As a computer genius, he created a series of games with his father Baker.
Why did the game rules change?
At the beginning of the movie, the boy's father was obsessed with fishing a special fish and named it "justice". This is the initial rule in the boy game, meaning that the boy wants justice in real life. But his father tried his best but couldn't catch that fish. As the story progresses, the rules of the game become the bastard stepfather who kills the boy. In the movie, all the people on the island who have intersection with the boy's father tried to stop him, but in the game created by Partrick, his father finally helped him realize his wish after various struggles. When I saw this, my heart collapsed. The changes in the rules of the game reflected the changes in the boy's heart. The justice he hoped for was never realized.
Why is the title Serenity?
Serenity is a term for serene. I deliberately checked the bilingual dictionary and explained it as "calm, peaceful". The movie didn't mention the topic until the end. When the boy called his father, he said that he wanted them to go to a peaceful place and live together. It can be understood that the theme of this movie has two meanings: 1. Anti-domestic violence, the boy’s persistent creation of all this is actually a stepfather who wants to stay away from domestic violence addiction and find a "peace" place and a peaceful life. . However, in the movie, Partrick failed to do so, and finally had to kill his stepfather. 2. Father’s love, in the virtual world created by the boy, his father has always been desperate to do everything possible to help the boy realize his wishes. This is the image of his father in his imagination, which the poor boy has been pursuing.
I personally think that the science fiction color of this movie is not so important, and the content that the director and screenwriter want to express is still very warm; the title is a little gimmick, which makes many people confused after watching it; the narrative is a bit messy, and there are more clues to portray the little boy. The movie will be clearer. To be honest, the end of the movie really moved me and deserves a higher rating.
