Threesome

You say: I love you. I said: stay.
I almost said: Possess me. But you said: let's go.

Truffaut's 1962 work, the most famous threesome in film history.

Catherine

is named after two men in the movie, but the actual protagonist is Catherine played by Jeanne Moreau.

Catherine's appearance was a close-up of the face from multiple angles. She, who had almost the same face as the stone statue, conquered two people on the spot, especially Jules.

Catherine is an extremely freedom-loving person. Of course, she cannot tolerate patriarchy, so she will suddenly jump into the river to protest when Jules says that “as a wife, loyalty is very important, but the husband’s side is secondary”. This jump made Catherine always be in a strong position in her future marriage with Jules, and also conquered Jim. But the same freedom delayed her getting along with Jim.

Her motto is "At least one of the lovers must be loyal." In other words, in a love life, she can be unfaithful to the other person, but the other person cannot do anything to betray her. So she would play "pajama tricks" again and again, but couldn't stand Jim and Gilberte together.

A long time later, when the three met again, when Catherine met Jim again, a man she never fully possessed, he drove down the broken bridge resolutely.

Jules, a

German man, a weak man in love, he was dumped by Thérèse at the beginning of the film. This weakness has continued throughout his life.

His knowledge of Catherine is far less profound than Jim, he is just attracted by the mystery of this kind of Catherine.

His gentleness, generosity, simplicity and fragility confused Catherine and made her feel that he was so different from other men. But when Catherine realized that it was part of his character, she resolutely left him.

His love for Catherine is absolute, so in order to keep Catherine, he can accept her and Jim together, the typical "pain and happiness".

At the end of the film, when he watched the two coffins enter the incinerator, he let out a sigh of relief.

Jim is a

typical amorous French man who has been with Catherine repeatedly and at the same time is ambiguous with Gilberte.

The knowledge of Catherine is far clearer than that of a German man. When Jules asked him "Will you mind if I marry Catherine?", he didn't answer directly, but instead asked: "Will she be a typical good wife and mother? Me? I'm afraid she will never be happy in the world. She is a ghost, not a woman for a man." In

his bones, he and Catherine are very similar. Both love freedom and hope that his partner will be loyal and tolerate his occasional cheating.

It’s hard to say which one of the two women he loves more. After all, they are two completely different types of women. Gilberte’s personality is as gentle as Jules. Never let go. Finally, when Catherine drove the car down the river, Jim did not resist.

There are two most memorable scenes in the film. One is when Catherine sings "Monsoon of Life" under the accompaniment of Albert. It feels like time has stopped.

The other is the section where Catherine, Jules, Jim, and Sabine are making faces at the dining table. The camera scans everyone in turn, and happiness is written on everyone's face. That should be the happiest moment in the lives of the three. The description of the friendship between two men in the

postscript

film seems to me incredible. Two people who love the same woman can actually take care of their friendship so perfect. After watching a little bit of footage, I realized that this movie is based on the autobiography of a 73-year-old man. Probably only people at that age can experience this truly selfless emotion.

Monsoon with life

Each finger she wore a ring wrist bracelet full sets of
her voice clear water to teach people jumping for joy Chui
her eyes bright as gems made me ecstatic

her face as beautiful as Guan Yu to kill the deadly beauty who
met that fate miss It's helplessness,
bitterness and joy, going against the wind, going against the wind
, the whirlwind of life blows us round and round,

and when we meet again that night, it still makes my heart beat, it
is she, she is really her
mysterious smile teaches me my heart is
frightened, my face is beautiful, it makes me confused and again blurred
in the hands of a good wine is a beauty in the eyes of

people obsessed with a half-drunk drunk drunk
sleeping gentle
encounter is fate miss helpless
joy wind passed away
the life of the cyclone blew us round and round

that night to meet again my heart is still called
kissed missed
back Come into my arms, be my baby,
meet and separate, life is not uncommon,
I hope to be drunk without waking up and go to sleep with you.

Dialogue selection
JULES: Would you mind if I marry C
JIM: Will she be a typical good wife and mother? I'm afraid she will never be happy in the world. She is a ghost, not a woman for a man to own.

Pursue freedom and enjoy every moment of life.

JULES: As a wife, loyalty is very important, but the husband is secondary.

In German, the moon and war are masculine words, while the sun and love belong to women.

C: The generosity, simplicity and fragility of JULES confuses me and wins my heart. He is so different from other men. I expected to use my heartiness to cure his weaknesses, but they turned out to be part of his character. Our happiness will not last long, and we will finally be forced to face each other, unable to become one.

JULES: She is not particularly beautiful, smart or sincere, but she is a real woman. And she is the woman we all love... the desire of a man. Why do so many women pursued by both of us? Because we treat her like a queen.

In a pair of lovers, at least one of them must be loyal.

Jules and Jim quotes

  • Jules: The most important factor in any relationship is the woman's fidelity. The husband's is secondary. Who was it who wrote, "Woman is natural, therefore abominable?"

Jim: Baudelaire, but he was describing a certain world.

Jules: Not at all. He spoke of women in general. What he says about a young girl is magnificent: "Horror, monster, assassin of the arts, little fool, little slut. The greatest idiocy combined with the greatest depravity." Wait. I'm not finished. This is marvelous: "I'm always astonished they allow women inside churches. What could they possibly have to say to God?"

    Catherine: You're both fools.

  • Jim: I understand.

Catherine: I don't want to be understood. It's almost dawn.
