The spiritual city-state of the legal man

"The Ruling" starring Paul Newman can be said to be a true record of the operation of the American lawyer system. The film also allows us to see the image of a lawyer who faces a powerful enemy and goes all out to protect the interests of the client in the skilled judicial operation of the West. Of course, this lawyer named Frank is not the kind of elite American lawyer in our traditional impression who conducts "public interest litigation" from the weak to the strong, regardless of personal interests.
Frank is a poor lawyer. He spent his time drinking in the tavern. In order to fight for a case, he had to attend someone else's funeral and impersonate a friend of the deceased. Unfortunately, he was driven out of the funeral. At this time, we seem to be able to break our illusions about the protagonist and at the same time let us understand the real status of lawyers in real life in the West. Lawyers are often described as provoking abusive litigation, doing nothing, greedy for money, and become the defenders of upper-level interest groups. In the film, Frank, who is in a state of collapse, receives a medical dispute case introduced to him by a friend. Frank was willing to settle out of court at first, so that he can have one-third of the compensation money in his pocket. If Frank accepts an out-of-court settlement, his image will be no different from this type of lawyer.
Fortunately, Frank chose the self-esteem that a lawyer should insist on. Although the opponent is extremely powerful, it can buy tokens, influence the judge, and even control the entire litigation process. Facing various setbacks, Frank almost chose to give up. We can deeply feel the mentality of his desperate situation. But the patient's tragic situation aroused his courage. In the court, facing the effectiveness of his evidence being resolved by his opponent, he was almost desperate, but his affectionate and sincere speech finally moved the jury.
Frank is not a golden hero, but with his persistence and sincerity, he has given us legal people a little comfort and a little green hope in the desert. When legal persons are faced with all kinds of temptations and huge pressures in reality, can we persist in our original dream of pursuing justice without degenerating into greedy prosecutors? The spiritual city-state of the legal person should be built on our common ideals of justice. Despite the dazzling secular glory, will we get lost in our spiritual city-state?
At the end of the film, Frank lay on a chair, facing the phone calls from his lover (the lover was actually a spy sent by his opponent), ringing a lot, but did not pick up after all. Perhaps this is a price for legal people to pursue justice. In the face of temptation, we must have a lonely mind and the courage to reject temptation to defend the spiritual city-state we believe in.

Dr. Towler: Well, many reasons, really...

    Ed Concannon: Tell me one.

Dr. Towler: She'd aspirated vomitus into her mask.

Ed Concannon: She threw up in her mask. Now cut the bullshit, please. Just say it: She threw up in her mask.
