Unrealistic biographical film

First of all, from the perspective of the play, the film (the movie "Tolkien") is not satisfactory.

As a film with the title of Tolkien's biography, the film is actually mediocre, and the standard is not up to the standard. The narrative as a whole is very scattered and has no center of gravity. The stacking of elements such as love, friendship, battlefield, and nightmare can be put into almost any other related story, but we know that it is not Tolkien. At least, those things are not the important part about Tolkien. Only at the end of the film did the themes of Tolkien's work appear hastily: about courage, about partners, friendship, and with the ending subtitles, it feels like the director has to make people believe that this is Tolkien's story. The so-called script is not enough, the performance comes together, but the performance of the actor Nicholas Holt can not convince people that he is the great writer Tolkien, this is the biggest shortcoming of the film. Fortunately, the selection and performance of the heroine Lily Collins is still a little bit brilliant, which is the only highlight of the film.

For a biographical film of a real person, the actor's temperament must match that character in order for the entire film to stand up. For example, Daniel Day Lewis's performance in "Lincoln", within the first 5 minutes of the film, Lewis's vivid performance and powerful aura make people believe that this is Lincoln. Although we haven't met Lincoln himself. In the same way, it is not about the entire life of the character, but only a fragment of his life, but the completeness of the play of "Lincoln" is many times stronger than that of "Tolkien". Both the play and the performance are insufficient, which is the source of the unacclaimed film "Tolkien".

One sentence summary: If you are not a fan of Tolkien books or "The Lord of the Rings", don't watch it. Otherwise, you will feel very confused during watching the movie: it is also a battle, why the hero of this movie is babbling on the battlefield, does not like fantasy, and does not bring weapons when charging, but he does not look like him. How about the soldiers in "Road to Glory" being tried by a military court like that?

The reason for writing the above text is not to recommend this movie, just because I am a fan of "Lord of the Rings". I hope to see a vivid Tolkien biographical film in the future. If you can’t be vivid, then Forget it. Don't have.

Tolkien quotes

  • J.R.R. Tolkien: You are the most remarkable spirit I have ever met. You have courage and resourcefulness, talent, you're proud, maddeningly, wonderfully, so; and you are cunning and vibrant and completely alive. You deserve every happiness you find. No. No, you don't. You don't deserve happiness, that's not what I - What I mean is, you deserve much more. You deserve magic.

  • Father Francis: I spend my every afternoon with mothers, widows. What can I say to them? Your sons have died in the war to end all wars.

J.R.R. Tolkien: What do you say?

Father Francis: Words are useless. Modern words, anyway. I speak the liturgy. There's a comfort, I think, in distance. Ancient things.
