For a boring movie, the director/writer’s idea can use a "delusion" (game setting) to interpret the "damage of domestic violence to children", but the film presentation method is too "pediatric", and the editor is not strong enough. The clues of the two stories are not detailed and rigorous enough, and the results can be imagined, "semi-finished products", unfortunately, sigh...
Enter the film, first organize the characters. Two teams of characters on two levels (real vs. virtual).
First, real life is the intermittent scenes of boys playing games. This is the clue of reality. In this clue, there are only three main characters.
1. Boy, addicted to the game world (designed/programmed by yourself), in order to get rid of the shadow of stepfather domestic violence
2. Karen, the boy's mother
3. Frank, the boy’s stepfather, was eventually killed by the boy
As for the boy's father (John), he died in the Iraq War.
Second, the virtual world (i.e. game world), the whole work basically rotates in this virtual frame, the purpose is to "make mystery" and "stun the audience". In this world, there are many main characters.
1. Dill (in reality, he is the principal of a boys’ school; in the game, his father), a man obsessed with catching a tuna named "Justice"
2. Karen, the boy’s mother, came to ask Dill (ex-husband) for help to kill the current Frank
3. Frank, the boy’s stepfather and Karen’s current husband, had a tendency to drink/violent, and was eventually killed by Dill and Karen.
4. Mill, the man who sells fishing gear
5. Constance, Dill's lover
6. Duke, Dill's former partner
Let's sort out the plot again.
Realistically, there are very few scenes involved, and the content is roughly the boy angrily cuts his stepfather
The virtual level (in the game) is the main body of the game. Judging from the length of the space, there is a lot of content, but think about it carefully, isn't it the simple incident of "Karen teamed up with her ex-husband to kill the incumbent and rescue the boy"? What else? Fishing, selling meat, intimacy... These are almost "add oil and vinegar" things, but they have no practical meaning at all.
To sum up, the content of this work is just a pit, relying solely on actors to attract the audience's attention (Matthew McConaughey's buttocks, Anne Hathaway's naked back), unwise and unwise. With all due respect, the director should focus more on the socially sensitive topic of "domestic violence" instead of treating it as a "gimmick" or "embellishment".
