Horror film: the name of the image - bloom in secret several beautiful image panic ■ text / Vulcan discipline
The gloom beckons us to move forward. Set aside all the buffers. Dare to go, go straight.
What is beauty. What is terrible. When unable to dodge. Enjoy them.
Not blooming in the most filthy corners. At the time when I was most worried. Be quiet. ——Vulcan Ji. Inscription.
If you walk more nights, you will have the chance to meet ghosts. And there are so many ghosts, maybe, no more panic. Because all the monsters will always appear in a specific place at a specific time. And the reason why we are panicked is just because when we didn't figure out the situation, those sudden pictures, sandwiched some abrupt strange sounds and those bizarre and fragmented lighting effects. The reason for panic is because of abruptness and because of unknownness. I remember Freud said that people often have an inexplicable fear and worry about the unknown. This sentence is basically the foundation of all horror films.
What the writers and directors of horror films have to do is to create the most obtrusive things when we least foresee them. I don’t feel much about watching horror movies now. After all, I can predict almost all the usual scenes and extravagance. So that the horror film has a kind of bland and tasteless like chewing wax.
We are indeed afraid of all the unknown. Now I am less alarmed about what I know or even understand. When we are no longer panicking, we will find that at certain times, when we are most disturbed, some pictures will leave us with eternal beauty and unfading memories. Such things are defined by me as beautiful panic images.
Of course, my initial reason for writing this article is to recall and summarize the horror films I have watched over the years; however, when I write this, I suddenly feel that such things have no way to fully express what I want to clarify. Thing becomes a description of imagery. In fact, if we can calm down, the darkest things, many times, look beautiful. A sense of beauty in dark tones, a sense of beauty that will never die. Horror movies are often like a beautiful poem.
I remember that when I used to surf the Internet, there was something called dirty aesthetics, which were shots of some dismemberment of the human body or the tyranny or even murder of the living. Bloody, there is often a kind of foul-smelling synesthesia when watching. When filth can be regarded as an aesthetic, then why can't fear become an aesthetic thing. Of course, such things are not something of public taste, so I don't expect such things to be spread.
In my opinion, of all the movies, perhaps, only horror movies have the best use of imagery.
1. Narrow and long corridors.
This is the most common image in all horror films. Faintly long. Because the end of the road is always a gloom with no side. Perhaps we can know that the end of this corridor is just the end, and nothing else. But because of the long and invisible end, we began to feel an inexplicable panic. narrow. Because of the shaking of the lens or other reasons, the upward feature and the close-up of the narrow lens can easily create a sense of oppression.
Because of the unknown fear and oppression. At some point, something unknown appears, which is enough to make people panic. Almost all horror films are just a psychological game played by the director and us. When we are driven by his inner hints, we can only follow him into the traps he has preset for us in advance.
In this regard, there are two outstanding representative works in the "Damn" series. In the narrow and long corridor, a child who has passed away lowered his head and kept asking: Sister, have you seen my score sheet? The blending and superposition of the scene and the plot, and the dark beauty, all began to spread out in the corridor.
2. The corner of the stairs, the shadowy lost person.
Go upstairs or upstairs and walk quickly. They usually run away after a period of panic, and then there are stairs to make people rush like hungry. As a result, the frightened person will generally be further frightened on the stairs without accident. The most abrupt thing on the stairs is the corner of the stairs. The lens is all the way up or down. At the corner, suddenly a close-up shot. Or shrinking, or arrogant, the abrupt effect will be very good.
The most impressive in this regard is "Box Burial" by Takashi Miike. The voice of the twin sisters' ghosts at the corner and the helplessness of having to go forward. Of course, there is also the most classic scene of Gayazi in "The Grudge", crawling down from the corner of the stairs. There is a kind of active fright, and a kind of slow solemnity, which is very beautiful.
3. Elevator, a place of imprisonment with nowhere to escape.
elevator. A closed place of imprisonment. As close as possible to the metal wall of the elevator. The elevator doors will never open at this time. The wanton fright will begin to gradually spread its savage taste in this small space.
One can only feel peace when standing on the ground. Therefore, the elevator itself is already a very scary space. Leaving the ground on which we have been standing since childhood, in mid-air, there is nowhere to rely on. And the only thing we can rely on is a self-enclosed imprisonment. And in this enclosed place, besides us, there are some unknown forces torturing us. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why the image of the elevator is used so extensively in horror movies. But, even the imagery that can be seen everywhere. We still panic every time we see it. Because fundamentally, we cannot get rid of this emptiness and anxiety of leaving the earth. I always feel that this is the most beautiful scene in a horror movie.
For example, "Ghost Bell". Woman, elevator, cell phone ringing. There are eyes peeping from the metal surface of the elevator. This metal surface also has the function of a mirror which will be mentioned later. The elevator suddenly went out of control. The woman's hand gripped the metal wall tightly, with nowhere to escape. The elevator went down, all ten red nails were broken, and the woman screamed sharply.
4. Never open the dilapidated wooden door that has been sealed.
This wooden door must be dilapidated and of that kind of heavy solid wood. Because of the age, the shaft has been in disrepair for a long time, and it makes a creaking sound when the door is opened. And this time is usually at night, there is no light. Penetrating heart and lung sounds, and flickering light. Positioned lens, do not move, close-up. The wooden door will not be pushed open all at once. It is slow and light, but the sound is loud. Then there will be another shot of a quick edit.
This imagery has been used in horror films countless times. Because this image will still make us panicked no matter how many times we see it. We never know what is waiting for us behind this door. And the slower the door turns, we will worry about the longer time we expect. We don't know when, after the lights flicker, will something break into the corner of our eyes. Because of the unknown, because of waiting. So this imagery has been used countless times and is still fresh. The visual expectation will speed up our heartbeat, and the aurally distressing sound has a miraculous effect that fuels the flames. Sight and hearing are both under control, and many times we will indulge in it. What's more worrying is that we don't know when the fast-edited shots will suddenly appear, so we continue to be afraid of rapid heartbeats.
And this image still seems to have not been abandoned and evolved. No longer do you jump out of the quick-editing shot directly after the door is opened. The previous process will be exactly the same. However, we found that after opening the door, it was empty, and when we started to relax our nerves, we suddenly jumped out of the screen. This is a relatively successful application mode of this image. Nowadays, there is always this kind of slow opening of the door, holding your breath and waiting until the scary picture flashes, and then relaxing your vigilance, it is always correct.
5. Unidentified objects on the ceiling.
First, there will be a voice coming from above, raising your head, and the seemingly peaceful ceiling is as calm as water. This may be the most sordid worry in modern living rooms, because when you walk into a new-style apartment in the city from under the old man-shaped roof, the ceiling is no longer the kind of eaves beams and tiles that can be seen, all roofs will have one The sandwich is neither thick nor thin. And we will never know what kind of things will be in those dusty and dark interlayers forever. The sound, the unidentified voice tempts us to explore a truth. In other words, our curiosity drives us forward; but it is also our curiosity that drives us to places where we shouldn’t. This horrible image captures the curiosity very well, the curiosity of the characters in the movie and the curiosity of us following them to see. This is doomed to the success of this image.
The most impressive thing is the ceiling in the "The Grudge" series. Climb up, without light, can't see anything. So use a lighter to illuminate. Then he found that there was a hideous face in front of him. Maybe it has been dead for many years, maybe it's just a fantasy. The function of the lighter is to use flashing lights to intensify the sudden change of the atmosphere and make that face appear abrupt, dodge and run quickly. But when this hideous face chased down, maybe when watching the movie, it was not as scary as the moment when the lighter was just hit.
6. A figure wriggling on the screen.
On the TV or computer screens before "The Ring of Midnight", perhaps the most terrifying shots were nothing more than the same. At least it won't make us trapped in front of the screen with uneasy breath. However, it was Sadako in "The Ring of Midnight" who made this all true. When the screen and reality began to become confused, the screen became a very scary image. Because we will always worry about when those terrible things will happen before our eyes, and those terrible things will crawl out of the TV screen. The Sadako in "The Ring of Midnight" always crawls out of the TV screen every time, or chases after the poor characters on the TV screen. People are running in front, and Sadako on the TV screen is crawling fast. , The TV will chase after people. In the end, Sadako crawled into reality without exception, completing her ultimate blow.
The people in the movie are worried, and we sit outside the screen and start to worry, when will a Sadako crawl out of the screen to claim our lives. The bleak lens succeeded in bringing this concern to the extreme. Later movies such as "Ghost Bell" or "Ghost Call" and "Aniang" all used computer screens, but they were far from the overwhelming and overwhelming panic effect that Sadako crawled out of. Using the sudden changes on the screen to create a horror effect, but what kind of horror effect is more scary than a real ghost crawling out of it.
7. The dead but not stiff body is always hidden in the depths of the cabinet.
It's still "The Grudge" and the hateful Gayazi. For me, the scariest child in a horror movie, Gayako is much more fierce than Sadako. Because Sadako's resentment was at least based on her hatred and curse; however, Gayako's resentment seemed to come uncontrollably. There are not many reasons, but hatred just because of hatred is the most terrifying and also the strongest. If it is far-fetched that Gayazi's death is related to her secret love for her son's teacher, then her resentment should really be so strong. Killing everyone involved in the matter, and taking his son around to commit crimes, it seems that there is no need for any reason afterwards. Gayazi seems to be the most unreasonable and cruel evil spirit. And the first place she appeared was actually in the cabinet in her house. The magical effect of the lighter came in handy again. Then, it was still a terrifying face.
The magical function of the cabinet is that it combines the advantages of the wooden door and the small space. Common similar images include windows, drawers, etc. Open, suddenly appear, this kind of abrupt feeling will always achieve unexpected results. Later, this imagery was also a frequently used setting, and the more effective ones were "Alien Space" and "Reincarnation". The reason why "The Grudge" and "Midnight Bell" have become typical horror films is that they use classic imagery, and the latecomers seem to just keep repeating everything before.
8. The smiling face that can never be seen in the mirror is sad.
Mirror. This may no longer be an example to illustrate which movie is more successful. Because this image can be seen in almost all horror movies. It is often used and too common, so when watching a horror movie, we always hold our breath unconsciously when we see the mirror in the lens. Because we know that there are always unexpected images in those mirrors that suddenly come out to scare us. I remember that the initial horror of the mirror was staring at the mirror in an empty room. Gradually, I found that in the mirror world that is completely reflected in our real world, that self should be exactly the same as myself. Suddenly he will become unfamiliar. That feeling is a kind of fear that erupted from the bottom of my heart, so I still refuse to look in the mirror for a long time.
The fear of mirrors has a long history. And horror movies may also get inspiration from the mirror. In the imaginary world, the world that completely reflects the real world, if there are some people who are completely parallel to us, it may not be terrible. But because of the reflection, it was a completely opposite world. The reality is yang, and there is yin. The reality is the human world, and there is the ghost realm there. The most common things that are not terrible become the most terrible images. And the most outstanding part of this image is that such props are easily dipped, and mirrors are daily necessities, which can be seen everywhere. All things that will reflect can become this image, or a derivative of this image. The series of "Bringing Ghosts Home" and "Heaven" are more impressive. Of course, like mirrors are the daily necessities of life and can be seen everywhere, mirrors are also the most commonly used daily necessities in horror movies and can be seen everywhere.
9. The bloody lotus in the weird bathroom.
Halfway through the bath, I suddenly realized that the stinking blood instead of steaming hot water was flowing on my body. The taboo of blood, because of the nakedness and unobstructedness and dodge, makes this imagery especially outstanding in the sudden and sudden change of imagery. Beautiful women go out in the bath, and horror movies seem to like to use beautiful women to complete this process. When our eyes begin to enjoy obscenity, the sudden bloody smell will make the beauty out of the bath run like a rabbit. There may be a power outage that accompanies it, because it will not let the beauties go out, and the panic about the darkness adds a weird charm to the image.
Similar things can be seen in movies such as "Gemini", "Girls High" series and "Devil's Art" series. Space, perspective, hearing, tone, lighting; everything will be called up. After all, it's just abrupt.
10. The never-ending sad cry in the dry well.
Having said this, Zhenzi must sneer with Yin Yin and said: Give me someone else. Before crawling out of the TV screen, Sadako always crawled out of the broken well. Because he was buried in an old well that hadn't seen the sun for many years, this well with a fracture was almost where Sadako's grievances were deepest.
And the well is on the ground, leading to the underground. Narrow and long. The ground is the place where people live, and the underground is the dwelling place of the dead; is the narrow and long well a winding path between the two? No one knows. Perhaps it is precisely because no one knows, so this image can always scare many people confused.
The manhole cover is always open, which means that the door of hell is open. Before the well dries up, there is water, and the dim water will separate the two. No one knows whether there is mud in the world below the water level; and in the mud, is there resentment that has been buried for thousands of years; or at all. There is no water, no one knows where the waters here will lead to. There are always some terrible legends in the wells where people have died and the wells that have dried up. And the never-ending cry of sadness is the most innocent sadness in our hearts.
11. The rooftop, a desperate situation with nowhere to go.
The rooftops in horror movies do not have as many false and unpredictable reflections as the rooftops in "Infernal Affairs". The rooftops in horror movies are more intuitive. There is no way to go, and there is filth behind. Such a place is definitely the favorite place for horror movies. Because there is no way to dodge, I can only stand, sit, and tremble watching everything happen slowly. The movie creates such a scene to make the characters nowhere to run, but it is also to make us nowhere to run. So we can only stand, sit, and tremble with the characters and watch everything happen slowly.
The long wait and the wait and see gave this image a terrifying effect. The desire to jump down is very strong, but it is impossible for the character to be caught like this unless he is driven to nowhere by the foul or is directly pushed off the roof. Hengjian is dead, why not have fun. Of course, the cheerful choice of roles will make the box office and effect of the movie not so cheerful, so let's keep our eyes open and tremble together. The characters will always say tenaciously that I will not give in so easily.
12. On the street, the noise of others is my panic.
"Damn" II once created a very good scene. The galloping woman and the noisy street, but no one can see what she sees, no one knows the panic of her worries. All the horror comes from one's own grasp of the image. When we look at such scenes, we often don't worry, but if we look at it from another angle, such scenes are equally good. If the person running is our own: No one will believe what we say; no one will see what we see... What is scary is not the lens that should be scary, but just acting A person's confusion about loneliness.
Loneliness induced by terror. And such loneliness and the illusion of fighting alone can contribute to this horror. This creates a proportional collapse effect. This will eliminate the other; this will rise and the other will rise. If I indulge in such an imaginary, I have to admit that this image touches me a lot. At least this image has a good grasp of human psychology. With a little carelessness, we can easily indulge in it.
13. Eye pupils, cruel and black and white like a dead fish.
The eyes are the windows of the soul. This should not be false, because there are many things that can be seen in a person's eyes. If this person is a pure child, then these eyes must be full of tenderness and peace. But if this person is an unholy evil child, then what kind of eyes will this look like? The eyes deceive people. This is certain, because when people begin to understand that the eyes are the windows of the soul, they also begin to know how to make their windows more beautiful and attractive. Although it may not be beautiful, but all those filthy things will definitely be buried. . The blinking eyes always move people. But if at the moment of flashing, what suddenly bursts out of warmth is a ray of cruelty and viciousness, or resentment, or desire to kill, or murderous filth...This is completely unassociated with warmth.
Eyes are basically one of the images often used in horror movies. The eyes in "Double Pupils" are the eyes that impressed me the most. Because two eye pupils, two personalities, holy innocence and evil and cruelty exist in one person at the same time, terrible things will always happen at the moment the pupils change. Such eyes are far more permeating than two people and two pairs of eyes. Because we don't know when these eyes will become another pair of eyes. Because of the unpredictability, these eyes looked very scary.
