The "Kumquat" co-produced by two small countries on the fringe of the vast Russian territory, Estonia and Georgia, is a good film that reflects the situation of several people in ethnic conflict. Local wars continue, but the conflict between the opponents is not insoluble, but death is with them at any time, even if they have put down their weapons.
Although the movie scene is small, what makes me feel is the impact of war on ordinary people in daily life. It is different from the scenes described and reflected in our common war-themed movies: Estonians are on the land of Georgians. They were born there all the year round, not to fight, but to live.
The scenery in the movie is beautiful, it is a daily, partial beauty—the smoke of cooking does not cover up the smoke of gunfire. But everything is gone, and finally it belongs to the bell of death and the hands of the living.

A day for two Estonian neighbors

The way they deal with the war is like a meteorite falling into their own field one day: they bring tools to pick up the meteorite. First they picked up a Caucasian, then found a Georgian alive and took him home... and they were Estonians themselves; finally they buried two Georgians and a Chechen in the ground away from their yard .

After three cannons, the Caucasian missile crossed the Mother River, and the house of the Estonian Magos was gone. At the beginning he lost his original home... His son died on the front line. He stayed alone in a house on the side of the road for three acres of kumquats.

It's all right now. Just as they were mediating a dispute between Georgians and Chechens, his house was blown up: He did nothing, just to wait three days for his helper to come and pick kumquats together.

It is night, his kumquat tree is still there, the kumquat fell to the ground, and his house is gone.

Local tombstone

After another group of Caucasians arrived, Georgian Nika shot behind the window, because the injured Chechen Ahmed swears at them. His fellow Caucasians were provoked and three automatic rifles were aimed at him——

After Nika shot, Margos, an Estonian who grows kumquats, was shot to death: He did nothing wrong, even if his house was shot the night before, he was not prepared to retaliate; Margos fell on the corner from the utility room. One meter away; the Chechen from the Caucasus—Ahmed dragged him into the depths; In order to live...not to toast to death, Ahmed also took up the gun and joined the young theater actor Nika , Shot at his compatriots...

In the end Nika also died. He died of a dramatic Caucasian resurrection. Ibrahim and the old Estonian Ivo buried them:

Four Caucasians, whose original occupation is unknown; Nika, a young Georgian drama actor; ... they died as soldiers; Margos, an Estonian kumquat farmer, died in his familiar homeland—the green mountains of the Caucasians.

Tangerines quotes

  • Margus: Soon there will be rain.

    Ivo: There will not.

Margus: They will be here soon.

    Ivo: Who?

Margus: The Georgians and Russians. And the tangerines will stay in the trees. You know what this war is called? The war of citrus.

    Ivo: What do you mean?

Margus: It's a war over my tangerines.

Ivo: Be normal. They are fighting for the land.

Margus: For the land where my tangerines grow.

  • Ahmed: I will avenge my friend. This is a holy thing for us old man, you don't understand.

Ivo: Killing a sleeping man, when he is unconscious, is that a sacred thing too? I didn't know.
