So many people dislike this movie, what is it so ugly?
The last time I watched Flyboys was in junior high school, more than ten years have passed, but I still like it again. Gorgeous French rural landscape, pure exotic romance, indestructible friendship, diverse and plump characters, fierce battle scenes, and real backgrounds.
But with a deeper understanding of World War I and a further understanding of international relations, watching this film today can no longer be as simple as it was more than a decade ago.
Since World War II, Germany has been unable to raise its head on history. Although the economy is now developed and the EU has always played the role of savior, it still bears the image of an aggressor who provoked war. In World War II, Germany was indeed an aggressor, but other European countries should also be responsible for this. Multi-party games made the reason very complicated and we did not discuss it.
However, the First World War was not initiated by Germany, and it can even be said that Germany joined the war passively. Winner or loser was because Germany was a defeated country, and the Allied Powers deliberately or unintentionally misled the masses and threw the pot away to the Allies. It is as if we say that we are descendants of Yan and Huang, not the descendants of Chi You. Even during the war, the media of the Allied Powers continued to discredit the soldiers of the Allies, describing them as innocent bad guys, rationalizing the government's behavior; defrauding the people and attacking the unarmed people in order to threaten their opponents, but they always claimed that all the actions of the army were reasonable and legal... Cassidy told Rowlings in the movie that no one will win this war, but one day it will end naturally. The two world wars can be said to be a shame in the history of human civilization, and there is nothing to be proud of in victorious countries.
Flyboys also demonized the German soldiers intentionally or unintentionally. Fortunately, the pen was not very heavy, and it did not arouse my disgust.
In any case, the soldiers who went to the battlefield to defend their homes and nations are all good. Their sacrifices may not be worth it, but they should be remembered and commemorated.
