This movie is a very bad movie, it is seriously below the level of comics. This movie basically erases all the good parts of the comics, the narrative rhythm is loose, and the thinking is intermittent. Next, I will analyze it slowly.
The movie feels like a youth love story, the disabled heroine is generous, and even the "Virgin Mary". The actor knows his fault, everyone works hard, everyone grows up, and everyone is happy.
However, the comics do not say that.
(1) The
exquisite presentation at the elementary school level seems to be the strong point of female writers. The manga "Shape of Sound" secretly bury the motivations of many characters in some seemingly routine and lively plots, so that you won’t stop at once. Understand, but after comparing it before and after, it immediately became clear.
Why did the protagonist bully the glass? The narration of the animation is very superficial, that is, the class chorus competition is lost. In the comics, before the glass turned to this elementary school, there was a plot of the protagonist’s sneakers being stolen. When the protagonist found the fat man who stole the shoes and knocked him down, the protagonist said “Justice Victory” in super excitement. !". And why did he say this? It is also mentioned in another detail, that is, the protagonist and his friends watch the animation together after school. In the animation, the villain is beaten by the hero with a punch. After Glass transferred to another school, various unhappiness occurred with her classmates: the chorus competition failed; the teacher proposed to learn sign language, which caused everyone trouble; the girl who proposed to learn sign language did not come to class; the classmate always because Glass creates contradictions. In the comics, in the face of these incidents, the protagonist has the idea that "this person is a badass". So began to intensify the attack on the glass. In the movie, the protagonist does not have this consciousness. The movie portrays the protagonist who just feels that this person is disabled and can be very fun.
At this time, it was another secondary line, that is, "How does the teacher do in this situation?" The teacher who
proposed to learn sign language is idealistic, and she assumes that everyone is passionate about learning, and she is even half-hearted. If he doesn't know any sign language, he puts forward this kind of mindless initiative. This is the superficial representation of the teacher;
The other is the head teacher. The head teacher has a lot of details in the comics. He is not responsible for everything. The protagonist teases Nishinomiya. The teacher just calls the office to say a few words and then let go. What's more frightening is that this teacher does not distinguish between right and wrong, and condones evil: the child does not understand why some people are born deaf and mute, and the protagonist mischievously said, "Oh, I forgot to draw ears today." Everyone laughed happily. What should the head teacher do at this time? The head teacher chuckled himself and was heard by the classmates. The teacher pretended to be okay and walked away. This sneer is to imply that the protagonists "the teacher is the same as we thought." Therefore, "We understand that we bullied her teacher." At this point, everyone's bullying and connivance have become more and more escalated.
Then when the situation developed to a serious degree, when the superior came to investigate in the class, how did the head teacher solve it? Sacrifice the protagonist directly to protect his own peace. So all the blame falls on the protagonist. These characterizations from the elementary school period are telling readers that the students' delinquency is inseparable from the teacher. The so-called teaching is not the fault of the father, and the teacher is lazy when the teacher is not strict.
↑Please note that these sub-lines have been deleted in the animation. Please compare the difference, the gap between animation and comics.
(2) High school life and high school classmates
because of the length of the movie, the movie largely deleted the background and life of every character in high school. The red-haired boy in the comics is a man who has been bullied since he was a child, and hopes to become a teacher when he grows up, and protects weak pupils by his own strength. But this is because the plot of "Everyone Makes a Short Movie Together" has been deleted from the movie, so it's all deleted. In this case, the personal background of every other student has been deleted. The only thing left is Ueno's jealousy of Glass. This is good, the story has become a love triangle, and the gloominess of bullying suddenly changed.
So let’s talk about shooting short films. In order to gather everyone together, the little fat man proposed to make short films. Some shots need to go back to elementary school to shoot. At this time, when the head teacher saw the protagonist, his first reaction was flattering: "You are so good! You went to a key high school" and said a line directly revealing the inner theme of the character: "You Have you come out of that incident? It’s the disabled student, no way. When everyone is unlucky, who made you catch up with such a person at that time?” I’m not going to describe this episode. Now, the follow-up plot of this manga is very exciting and shocking. From this line, we can see the contrast between the primary school class teacher and the protagonist’s redemption mentality. Echoing the plot of elementary school life completely, it points out that this teacher is not only indiscriminate and avoids responsibilities, but also he does not treat disabled children as human beings. The disabled are just a burden to him. What's more frightening is that such a scum has been living in school and teaching generations of students, which is chilling.
(3) Is the West Palace the Virgin?
The answer is: no. But because of the chaotic narrative rhythm of the animation, people didn't notice this at all. Nishinomiya has been polite since she was a child, and she apologized instead for others hurting her. What kind of psychology is this? The animation is so confused, I must feel that such fraternity is impossible, impossible. But I think everyone who knows loneliness can understand that people who are extremely humble and extremely inferior will have this reaction. It is emphasized in the comics, but understated in the animation, it is Glass’s sister taking pictures of dead animals all day long, which is intended to scare Glass so that she does not think about suicide. The glass has had suicidal thoughts since elementary school.
Glass's smile, apology, etc., are all thoughts like this: I'm sorry, my disability has caused you trouble. I am wrong. You should not conflict with each other because of my fault. But over time, the glass is painful: it can't be cured at all, what should I do? Therefore, she chose to commit suicide. She believes that all people are happy only if she is dead, because she mistakenly believes that the people around her are unfortunate because of her. Therefore, the glass is not fraternity, but extreme inferiority, fear and self-loathing, which shows such a reaction.
And what I want to say is that among those who use this movie to express their experience of being bullied, they yelled, "Glass is a Virgin, the people who are really bullied are not so fraternity, but full of hatred." Do you know, you guys? You can still yell because you still have a way out, and you all survived. Glass’s disability has no way out. When Glass sees her former classmates reunited, everyone is making various efforts for her, but the harder she tries, the more embarrassing the relationship will be, and she will be more helpless and collapsed. This is for her. Double blow. So she began to firm up the direction of self-closing.
(4) The thought process of the protagonist The thought
change of the protagonist is also one of the failures of this animation. As mentioned earlier, the protagonist’s motives for bullying the glass (this actually points out that the children’s motives for doing evil are due to ignorance and lack of Adult-led sense of justice). But later, the protagonist wants to see the glass, his thoughts are still deformed, he went to see the glass for his own sin. Originally intended to commit suicide after meeting, but did not commit suicide, so he used suppressing himself and pleasing glass as a method of atonement, and continued to atone for the sin he thought. What I think it is necessary to mention is that "how do I feel about it" and "what should I actually do" are different. The protagonist is selfish here, and his behavior is still at the level of self-thinking, rather than really thinking about the glass, so he has not understood that the glass is more suicidal. Glass jumped off the building and the protagonist was hospitalized. This major event made the two people understand the evil consequences of being immersed in the selfish way of thinking of the little self. So, from here, the two talents began to become mature.
They began to be able to face the relationship with everyone and the relationship with both mothers. This is the way out of the comics: if you are the victim, don't be knocked down by the victim, and don't take the other person's fault to yourself. If you are aware of your own fault, don’t use the mentality of atonement to find the other person. That’s just another kind of harm. The important thing is not to settle the past, but to let those hatreds end and disappear, return to one's health, and live well. This is not the animation at all.
So for those who curse and clamor for the Mother of God, what is the essential difference between your selfishness and resentment and the selfishness of the glass and the protagonist when they are immersed in the ego? Besides, what you are calculating every day is how to retaliate, how to recall your hatred of being abused, and then recall how abominable and self-satisfied you are thinking about these filthy things. And the glass never thought of harming others. I myself also lived in hatred and fear during my first year of high school. I understand that teachers are not acting, parents can’t help, students don’t know what is happening, I also hated those classmates who teased me at the beginning. I wanted to sleep every day when I got up, and I couldn’t wake up anymore, and this malice lasted for many, many years. . However, those incidents didn't make me die. Now, I understand better that people should not be defeated by the evils of these other people. Glass does this very well, but I am far from it: she never counts the evil of others. So please don't use the ridicule that the glass is the Virgin, to hide your evil, and then sell your own memories and emotions. This is really really very ugly. There is nothing else except to imply your inner cowardice and hatred.
(5) Narrative rhythm and ending The
whole animation is a daily narrative, and there are many bullying plots, with lively music and illustrated editing, which seem to be a relaxed daily life. It was totally inconsistent with the original tone of the audience's prediction, which created a weird atmosphere. Kyoto set the ending of "The Shape of Sound" at a very Kyoto ending-the cultural festival. And it gave a happy ending like a running account. Completely weakened the main point of the story. This ending is not only not clever at all, but also the feeling of "Are these people all fools?"
Summary:
There are many people who think animation is good. When analyzing the plot arrangement, they always like to tell the story in a reasonable direction. But in fact, this animation is indeed a typical failure. If you have checked the director of the movie, you know that his age and the driving ability implied by his resume cannot bear the pressure of the whole story. What's more, the consequences of compressing a seven-volume, meticulous comic into a two-hour length can be imagined.
It is rumored that a lot of content in the animation has been deleted due to pressure from public opinion, and it is not known exactly what it is. But I think the animation is not at the level that it should be in narrative. It has never considered the consequences of such a weakening of the plot. Movies are a medium for exposing political opinions, and when they touch sensitive social issues, they should be held accountable to the end. If you cut the plot because you are worried about the wind and affect the reputation, to reduce your burden and protect yourself, this is a manifestation of cowardice and selfishness. What Kyoto did this time looked like a peacemaker and didn't cause trouble. In fact, it happened to use a bad movie to corrupt the spirit of the comics. The scary thing is that Kyoto seems to be quite immersed in its own box office rise. To put it bluntly, not only did the director and screenwriter fail to understand the story, but I think they did not believe it from the bottom of their hearts.
=================================================
Appendix :
1. The movie also deleted a lot of plots depicting the mothers of the two parties. These plots also make people understand why the glass is always patient. For details, please read the comics. In order not to spoil the reading experience, I will not say more.
2. Please understand that comic authors are not famous by gimmicks. Because of her relatives' professional relationship, she knows sign language, and has come into contact with many deaf-mute people. It is precisely because she knows this social problem deeply and these incidents cannot be solved through normal channels that she draws it into a comic. If you have read the comics, you will understand the compact and meticulous layout of the plot, as well as the sincere and practical expression of emotions, which are not as loose and careless as animation, and deliberately whitewashed.
So, please go to the comics, don’t be misled by the animations, let go of your understanding in the animations, go to the comics, and re-experience the face of this story as it should be!
