Walter (Richard Jenkins played by Richard Jenkins)’s life remains the same. He has taught the same course for more than 20 years, and he has co-authored books with others that he hasn’t done much. Asking a private teacher to learn piano makes it difficult to get along with others. Life is dull like a pool of stagnant water. It wasn't until Shelly, who co-authored the book with him, was waiting to give birth and was unable to attend the annual academic meeting and replaced it with Walter, that his life won a change.
Walter, who rarely goes to New York due to the death of his wife, found two strangers in the house when he returned home in New York! It was only after the misunderstanding that the little couple had been tricked into renting this house. Walter asked them to stay. Tarek is an enthusiastic young man from Syria who loves to play drums, and his girlfriend is a black man from Senegal. Walter was impressed by Tarek's cheerfulness and learnt drumming from him, and followed him to the park to participate in ethnic minority drumming exercises.
That day, Walter and Tarek rushed home after practicing. When he crossed the subway, Tarek missed the best chance to pass the checkpoint. When he jumped over the checkpoint, he was arrested and detained by the police. Only then did Walter know that they were illegal immigrants. He hired a lawyer for him to run around. When there was no progress, Tarek's mother Mouna (played by Hiam Abbas Hiyam Abbas) came to the house because he was worried about her son. Walter appeased the mother. Anxious emotions took her to New York to relax, and the two had a feeling of mutual understanding. Walter took a long vacation from school and decided to stay in New York to do what he thought was truly meaningful and worthwhile.

The Visitor quotes

  • Zainab: Why did you invite him?

Tarek Khalil: We're staying in his apartment. What could I do?

Zainab: And I'll be stuck with him while you play your drum.

Tarek Khalil: You know you're very sexy when you're mad at me.

    [leans in to kiss her]

Prof. Walter Vale: [interrupts] Hello! If you don't mind, I think I will come.

    Tarek Khalil: Cool.

Prof. Walter Vale: Let me get my coat.

    [Zainab frustrates]

  • Prof. Walter Vale: I've been teaching the same course for 20 years, and it doesn't mean anything to me. None of it does. I pretend. I pretend that I'm busy, that I'm working, that I'm writing. I'm not doing anything.
