Straight line, pure and refreshing

Director and actor RZA is a singer and music producer who was influenced by Hong Kong's Shaw Brothers film when he was young, and he became very interested in Chinese culture and thought. This film is the result of his understanding of the Eastern world over the years. Lu's work is intended to pay tribute to the old Shaw movies.

RZA has a close relationship with Quentin and once produced music for one of the latter's masterpieces "KILL BILL". Quentin is said to have provided many opinions for "The Man With The Iron Fists" (Iron Fist).

Probably because the radio waves of the two are similar, the iron fist always feels a strong Quentin style, or does this represent that Eastern culture in the eyes of Westerners is presented in this form and style?

Let’s not mention Orientalism, let’s go back to the story, but to be honest, the story in this film is nothing to tell, a simple straight-line typical revenge story, gangs, brothels, coaxing, vendettas, upgrades, and defeating the enemy. It is such a classical (?) story mode, and even the cause of the vendetta and the characters in it need not be developed deeply. From this point of view, this film is indeed an old Hong Kong-style martial arts film, but it is a martial arts film made by western rappers.

Several important characters are inexplicably Westerners. The characters in the film sometimes communicate in English, then in Mandarin and Cantonese. The performers can perform dramas and sing Cantonese pop songs from the 1980s. At the same time, the background music of the whole film is HIPHOP style.

There is another story in which the protagonist goes to the monastery to learn martial arts and tricks with the monk played by Liu Jiahui, all of which point the audience's thoughts to the "standard killing order", but compared to the "standard killing order", «iron fist" is a straight line The development, the story mode is also simple, there is no Quentin editing, jump, so I do not agree that this is Quentin style Orientalist CULT film. It's just that the two materials and the main story line are very close, and limited to the background, the directors are all Westerners who have a so-called prejudice against the East. From their perspective, the "Eastern" that can be absorbed is probably this, plus it is difficult to make music. Excluding the relationship, the "taste" of the movie has to be quite close.

In the same way, their difficulty in understanding the real "Orient" may also be the reason why it is difficult for us to understand the "Eastern". Cultural differences exist after all, and this is precisely the factor that generates interest. Use the "normal" story. The "inappropriate" approach is interpreted, and the conflict in it creates a gap in aesthetics.

Go deep into why the female characters in the film are almost all prostitutes in the brothel, and the male characters are idiots who are keen to fight and kill. It’s not impossible, but this film is obviously a mixture of trying to piece together these in-depth and superficial elements. The picture is refreshing. On the contrary, this setting is more convenient for violent performances, pornographic display, visual sensory stimulation, and invigorating background music, in addition to refreshing, it is enjoyable.

It's another matter to forget the plot of the movie when you walk out of the theater.

If Lishen wants me to rate it, 5/10.
