The broken rope.

A little thought.
In [Whale Rider], it is the rope that has the deepest influence on me.
When Old Paka was repairing the motor of the boat, he showed Paikea the rope used to start the motor. The rope is very thick and consists of many small ropes. The thick rope itself is like the Maori people of Old Paka. And those small strings can be compared to the tribesmen of the Maori people. Old Paka, Paikea's father and Paikea represent the continuation of the Maori nation. The rope broke, as if Paikea's father had left his nation because of his stubborn disappointment with Old Paka. But Paikea tried hard to connect the broken rope and successfully used it to start the motor. Paikea is the hope of the Maori nation. Even though the reconnected rope is no longer as smooth and smooth as before, its spirit is still there. Paikea injected new strength into the Maori people, and allowed this seemingly broken rope to condense together again.

The casting is really good, it's not surprising to get the Oscar nomination for the heroine that year, but unfortunately this ending is a bit unconvincing.

A portrait of Maori group life that is as beautiful as a fairy tale every time a whale appears. This is not a feminist movie, but a women's movie, and the little heroine's performance is too great.

Whale Rider quotes

  • Koro: If you have the tooth of a whale, you must have the jaw of a whale to yield it.

  • [first lines]

Paikea: In the old days, the land felt a great emptiness. It was waiting. Waiting to be filled up. Waiting for someone to love it. Waiting for a leader.

    [child birth scene]

Paikea: And he came on the back of a whale. A man to lead a new people. Our ancestor, Paikea. But now we were waiting for the firstborn of the new generation, for the descendant of the whale rider. For the boy who would be chief.

Paikea: There was no gladness when I was born. My twin brother died, and took our mother with him.
