The title of this Australian film is really unattractive. "Animal Kingdom", um, is always thought to be an imitation version of the animal world explained by Zhao Zhongxiang. At least it also describes things related to animals. But after watching the movie, there is a feeling of lightening up. I've seen a lot of gangster movies, and this one is really new. From the frame of the story, to the setting of the characters, to the end of the movie, there are surprisingly successful places. The name of the movie "Animal Kingdom" is actually quite appropriate. The characters in the film are like animals in the animal kingdom. Everyone is a part of the food chain. The survival of the fittest and the survival of the strong are the laws of this kingdom, whether it is The police, the gangster, the grandmother or the little grandson, all act in accordance with the law of the jungle.
If this is also a gangster movie, it is absolutely different from previous gangster movies, no wonder Quentin Tarantino regarded it as one of the best movies of last year. The film cuts into the gangster family from the vision of a seventeen-year-old boy. It is an exaggeration to say that it is the gangster family, and it is too different from the Italian mafia family. In line with Australia's sparsely populated land, this family has only four brothers in total, plus an old mother. There is no one, no entourage, at most it counts as a family lawyer. Compared with the huge families from Sicily, it really looks shabby. Moreover, this family does not have its own family business, so it uses drugs for its own use or makes a small amount of money. However, the cruelty of this family is by no means inferior to other gangs. They confronted the local police and shot and killed two policemen in a police car in retaliation for killing their brother. The family also killed each other, the nephew's girlfriend was strangled to death, and the nephew was almost killed by the uncle. Of the four brothers in the family, only the youngest brother survived, and countless corpses were left in the film.
What's interesting is that the police are not regarded as representatives of justice in the film, but as the opposite side of the gang. They are actually in a relationship with this family. The existence of this family gives the police a reason for existence. The unscrupulousness of this family also made the police stabbed in the throat. Both sides find fault with each other and avenge each other's people. When they tracked down the family's eldest brother, "The Pope," they falsely claimed that the younger brother of the "Pope" had a gun, and shot him in the car as his gentle brother, who had no behavior and preparedness. After the deaths of people on both sides, the contradiction intensified to the extreme. The shooting of the two police officers left the police's emotions out of control, and they also launched frantic revenge operations. While hunting down another brother of this family, the police also deliberately induced the other man to escape, shot him to death, and lied that the man was out of control. In the film, the police we see are actually no different from another gang. The police arrested the gang as if two murderous gangs were in a fire.
The inside of this gangster family is actually a food chain. The four brothers, grandmother and grandson, are all links in the chain. The inside of the family is also full of suspicion and distraction. On the surface, the "pope", the boss of the four brothers, is the leader of the gang, but the real leader is the kind grandmother. The "Pope" is the most ferocious and unkind of the four brothers, and he is also the one who causes the most troubles. He draws everyone in the family into this criminal gang and makes everyone guilty. Several people in the film All of his deaths are related to him, either by his hands, or by the activities he planned, or by becoming his surrogate. He killed his nephew's girlfriend for no reason, and pursued his nephew ferociously. The final death at the hands of his nephew is also self-blame. The grandmother seemed kind and kind to her sons, but she was the real boss of this gangster family. She acquiesced and encouraged them to commit crimes and enjoyed the fruits of their crimes. She seemed calm, but in fact everything was clear to her heart. In the end, she personally went out and threatened to persuade her grandson to exonerate her last two sons in court, showing her conspiracy and cruelty. She was used to seeing too many deaths, escaped her daughter from taking drugs to death, she still talked and laughed freely; two sons were killed by the police, her pain and sorrow were still invisible. In the end, the immature grandson killed his uncle without changing his face and heartbeat, and became the boss of the new generation. Whether she was happy or sad, it still made people think about it.
It is difficult to say whether Joshua is lucky or unlucky. He had no connection with this gangster family, and his mother had left this criminal family long ago. But his mother died of drug overdose, and he could only return to the family when he was young. His return allowed the family to accelerate their way toward no return. He did not enjoy care in this family, but he saw too much sin prematurely. In such an environment, it is impossible for him to get rid of the sludge without being stained. In resistance and sway, he is forced to get involved in crime. In the film, he also became one of the key figures in the fight between the gangster family and the police. His family was full of suspicion and suspicion, and the police regarded him as the biggest breakthrough. The murder of his girlfriend became a turning point in his role change and made him mature. Facing the contention between the two sides, he obviously had his own idea. In court, he successfully exonerated his two uncles, and later killed the "Pope" with a gun himself, which is the most exciting of the whole film. This new generation of the leader of the gangster family was born. He was wiser and stronger, more cruel and ruthless. Even the original leader, his seemingly kind grandmother, was no match for him.
This is the picture shown to us by the Australian film "Animal Kingdom". It talks about human affairs. How is it different from the animal kingdom? Human beings always kill each other like this, the weak and the strong, the affection and order, which should be the difference between humans and animals, disappear here. Although this gang in Australia is not popular, it is even more ruthless.

Animal Kingdom quotes

  • Joshua 'J' Cody: Mum kept me away from her family because she was scared. I didn't realise it at the time, but they were all scared - even if they didn't show it. I think even Barry Brown was scared - even though he never showed it. Everyone felt safe around Baz. He'd punch your head off if ya got in the way - if he was in the middle of an armed robbin', you got between him and the door, he'd put you on the ground and not think twice about it. But he was good to me, and to everyone else. Darren was only a couple of years older than me. When we were little kids, he was like, my best friend. We used to throw rocks at cars 'n' that. He had a way better BMX than me - my bike was shit. My Uncle Craig moved really fast, like... he was tryin'a stay in front of somethin'. And Grandma Smurf - she just seemed to wanna be wherever the boys were. And she just wanted to be around whatever the boys were doing. But they were all scared, even if they didn't show it, even if they didn't know it exactly. Even if they were having to do what crooks do all the time which is, block out the thing they must know. They must know it - which is that crooks always come undone - always, one way or another. In Melbourne at this time - this is a while ago now - the armed robbery squad was out of control. They were shooting guys willy-nilly and gettin' away with it, and they'd been after Baz and my family for months. But the guy they really wanted, the guy they really hated, was my other Uncle - Uncle Andrew, but everyone just called him 'Pope'. He was hiding in a motel room somewhere 'cause he heard he was next. Craig was sellin' drugs, he was sellin' lots of 'em. He had a detective in the drug squad helpin' him do it - a guy called 'Randall Roach'. They'd meet in a fish shop in Footscray, 'cause Craig loved fish. An' I dunno - all this seemed strange to me, but not strange either, you know what I mean? Kids just are wherever they are and they just do what ever they're doin', you know? This is where I was, and this is what I was doin'. After my mum died, this was just the world I got thrown into.

  • Craig Cody: [after handing J. a handgun] Go get him.

Joshua 'J' Cody: And do what?

Craig Cody: Let him know who's king.
