Another great work by PARTICIPANT!

The movies produced by Participant are all about social issues, and most of them are excellent works. I have seen the famous Inconvenient Truth, Cove, which recently reported the Japanese massacre of dolphins, the award-winning Good Night, And Good Luck, Fast Food Nation, Food Inc, which is related to food issues, and the Soloist that reflects the homeless people, fighting for civil rights. Chicago 10, The Visitor that reflects immigration and visa issues, Charlie Wilson's War about the Afghan War, and so on.

All the works of PARTICIPANT are available on its website:

The founder of PARTICIPANT was formerly the boss of eBay Jeff Skoll. There is a wonderful introduction to PARTICIPANT on TED, the link is

The most touching scene in this movie is that the father speaks for his daughter at a union meeting. Richard Jenkins, who plays the old man, is also the leading actor of The Visitor. The Visitor is also one of the best movies I have ever seen.

One more point: not all unions are friends of workers. The union in the movie did not protect women from sexual harassment. Only the law can protect people's rights.

North Country quotes

  • Hank Aimes: [to Josey upon announcing her desire to work at the mine] You wanna be a lesbian, now?

Karen Aimes: [innocently] *I* wanna be a lesbian.

  • Josey Aimes: You act like I'm stealing. I work damn hard every day, same as you.

Hank Aimes: Oh, now you're the same as me.

Josey Aimes: Oh no, there's a few differences. You don't go to work scared of what they write about you on the walls, or what kind of disgusting thing you might find in your locker. You don't gotta be scared that one of these days you'll come to work and get raped.
