May the brilliance of reason guide me through the mystery of the mirror

There is no doubt that this movie is a great challenge to my intellectual and aesthetic level.

Perhaps it was due to the subtitles, and of course it was more likely because of my sad artistic appreciation. I saw some pieced together pixel movement in the long 100 minutes, and my ears were full of dreamlike poems. This is really a long-lost movie-watching experience. After watching it, I immediately remembered the American diplomat mentioned by Wang Xiaobo in the article "Appreciation of the Classics". From the first time he saw the ballet "Swan Lake" to the 300th time, he experienced the following three stages:

"In the first stage, you hear music and see dance-in short, you are appreciating art. In the second stage, you hear some sounds and see some objects moving, Perceive a familiar physical process. In the third stage, you have risen to the height of philosophy, and finally realize that ballet, like everything in the world, is just a form of material existence. From art to science to philosophy, it is a The process of returning to innocence."

Unlike "Swan Lake", Tarkovsky's "Mirror" has a magical power, which allows you to directly enter the third stage when you watch it the first time. In the boundless emptiness and fog created by the film, people are always involuntarily looking for a solid foothold. My constant self-comfort: Aha, at least I saw some beautiful images, at least I saw a woman's nostalgia for a man, or a man's remembrance of childhood, of course, maybe these are not very reliable, anyway They are all forms of material existence. The world is not mysterious, it is just a transition from one state to the next. As for why they go to the next state, or what these states are, it is beyond my comprehension. Just accept the gift of God.

Through some reviews of the film, I found that some people went through a process completely opposite to that of the American diplomat. They saw philosophy for the first time, and then watched it over and over again. They regarded movies as the object of scientific research. They worked tirelessly to figure out and analyze them, to understand Ta’s childhood, his parents and his hobbies, and to study the history and trauma of Russia. Learn advanced movie theory, analyze every line and every shot, harvest the only remaining logical fruits from the cluttered branches of the movie, smash them and smash them, add personal guesses and meditations, until they use a vast number of trivialities. Piece together a new classic. When they saw it for the 300th time, they had a great understanding and finally reached the first stage-appreciation of art-the stage that can be reached by reading the "Swan Lake" classics.

I admit that deciphering a film is the only way to aesthetic pleasure, but if the ciphertext of a film is so obscure that most people can only guess the stupid mystery in confusion, even if it contains With the vast capacity of the ocean, how can it be called a classic? Movies such as "Mirror" require additional information far beyond the film itself and far beyond the perception of the general audience to appreciate it. So what is its value?

Movies help artificial dreams, but everyone has the ability to create dreams by themselves. Put a piece of ultra-wide white cloth and write the word "Enlightenment" to tell a group of people that this is a great classic movie. Force them to watch it for two hours. Some of them may also be able to meditate on their own in lonely meditation. Experience, unknowingly create a movie or dream of one's own, to achieve an experience similar to watching a movie. But is the white cloth a movie? The responsibility of creation belongs more to the filmmakers than to the audience. Movies are not a hypnotic wand in the hands of wizards or psychedelic drugs in the hands of drug dealers. Magic wands and psychedelics can also help artificial dreams, but the way they create dreams is fundamentally different from movies.

Film is an art, and art is not a monologue. It always has to be attached to the times and human nature, and arouse the resonance of the group. As some filmmakers claim, movies can transcend the times, and some movies are created to fit a certain era in the future, so today's audiences cannot appreciate it, which does not mean that a movie is inferior. But at least in this era, in China, as an audience who hasn't done any homework beforehand, I can't give "Mirror" any praise. Because when I admired it, I seemed to break into the dream of others, and only heard the terrible monologue of the master. At that time, my only thought was to escape from this dream as soon as possible.

Mirror quotes

  • Father: It seems to make me return to the place, poignantly dear to my heart, where my grandfather's house used to be in which I was born 40 years ago right on the dinner table. Each time I try to enter it, something prevents me from doing that. I see this dream again and again. And when I see those walls made of logs and the dark entrance, even in my dream I become aware that I'm only dreaming it. And the overwhelming joy is clouded by anticipation of awakening. At times something happens and I stop dreaming of the house and the pine trees of my childhood around it. Then I get depressed. And I can't wait to see this dream in which I'l be a child again and feel happy again because everything will still be ahead, everything will be possible...

  • Forensic doctor: You know, I fell and found strange things here - roots, bushes... Has it ever occurred to you that plants can feel, know, even comprehend? The trees, this hazelnut bush...

Natalya: This is an alder tree.

Forensic doctor: It doesn't matter. They don't run about. Like us who are rushing, fussing, uttering banalities. That's because we don't trust nature that is inside us. Always this suspiciousness, haste, and no time to stop and think.
