Try to live in the way I approve

The daughter’s beauty, kindness and loveliness adds to the sense of tragedy

Sorted out the story of the general’s daughter in the film:

The general's daughter entered the West Point Military Academy. After entering the school, her performance was very good, surpassing most of the students in the same period, and she was hated (gender is an important factor). She was caught by six men during a night military exercise in the sophomore year. The students abused and raped maliciously and cruelly, and suffered a great deal of harm.

After receiving the news, the general’s father rushed back from abroad. After meeting with a relationship full of power, future, etc., he used a series of high-sounding (personal, military academies, military, and even social gender equality development so ironic) excuses to make his daughter forget. That nightmare night, especially keeping silent. The daughter survived that night and suffered tremendous damage, and was killed by her father again, mentally.

The daughter has never been able to get rid of the psychological shadow. After seven years, she restored the appearance of the night she was victimized. She called her father to see with his own eyes what had happened to her, and asked her father to admit that this happened. The father left unfeelingly, and the daughter finally found relief by death.

The first is the despair and pain of empathy, and the second is the feeling of powerlessness that deepens the former. The hope that remains after the daughter is killed, or the belief that supports her life, is that I am not wrong, the victim is not wrong, and those who are wrong and guilty are those who inflict the harm. The bad guys should be condemned and punished, and they are not given a chance to commit the crime again. Trials and sanctions are to reduce the possibility of similar things happening. Its meaning is not only simple revenge, but also the maintenance of human morality.

What is morality? One person steals, two people steal...Many people, most people steal, stealing becomes the default rule, then society will fall into the chaos of you stealing me and I stealing you, every moment of stealing, this is for the entire mankind. The development of a group is obviously useless and harmful, so it is regarded as contrary to the rules of society and immoral. Rape, torture, homicide...same reason. Those who believe in the strong to insult the weak should also be prepared to be bullied, because the more people who believe in this view, the more likely it is to become a rule in society. This is exactly what is called: what kind of world you want to live in, live in the way you approve, and your actions are indeed shaping the world. From this point of view, the silence of the daughter’s victimization case, being concealed from the public still retains some hope for social morality. Just imagine that if the public sympathizes with the case and there are few angry people after the case is announced, then it is the real despair of people in this world. In this sense, I didn’t feel completely depressed after watching the film. All kinds of injustices and injuries are happening in the world, and they may continue for a long, long, long time. But among the living people, I don’t want the world. There are many such people, and many people who do not want the world to be full of harm live. Silence and retreat, dying easily or even joining in doing evil is to hand over the world to those wicked people and lead the world to hell. The pity of daughters, the hate of villains and generals, the shooting and public screening of this film is a great reminder for me: Don't be ignorant of the evils of human nature, and don't lose hope because of it. Really give strength, know the world, know people themselves, and work hard to live in a way that I recognize. This is the meaning of my existence to the world.

The General's Daughter quotes

  • [Colonel Fowler asks Brenner for a favor in his investigation]

Col. George Fowler: Mr. Brenner. I understand you have special arrest powers.

    Brenner: Yes, sir.

Col. George Fowler: But I'm going to ask before you arrest anyone, you notify me.

    Brenner: Why is that, sir?

Col. George Fowler: We don't like our personnel being arrested by outside people without our knowing about it. There are three ways of doing things - The right way, the wrong way, and the Army way. See that in doing it your way, Mr. Brenner, you don't forget about the Army way.

  • [Sunhill and Brenner watch a tape of one of Elisabeth Campbell's teachings]

Capt. Elisabeth Campbell: [the tape plays] Our job here at Psy Ops is to panic the enemy, to blunt his will to fight. A Psy Operator must know the customs and habits of the enemy, the current dissensions, anxieties, and fears to determine vulnerability. To engage the enemy, you must know the enemy inside out. You must fill him with fear, and not just fear of dying. Fear of grotesque wounds is much more terrifying.

Sunhill: [Sunhill stops the tape] Ugh. Grotesque wounds.

Brenner: [Brenner smiles] I'll show you mine if you show me yours.
