Interpretation of religious metaphors in this play, and guess the storyline behind it based on the tenth episode.
Involving spoilers, involving spoilers, involving spoilers, most of the following personal guesses.
Ridley Scott's sci-fi works have deep religious metaphors , and this film is no exception.
There is an ancient Roman Mithraism in the setting of this film . This religion exists in reality. It was popular in the Roman Empire at the same time as Christianity, and then completely died out.
In the setting of the film, the parallel world of the Roman Empire did not convert to Christianity. Instead, it believed in Mithraism. The church established state power by uniting state and church. As a result, war broke out with atheists and used similar nuclear weapons (anti-material annihilation weapons? ) Such weapons of mass destruction have caused the destruction of the earth.
But in fact, the metaphor of this film is not of Mithraism, why?
Mithraism was too mysterious, with strict confidentiality measures, and only men could be enrolled, mainly soldiers of the Roman Legion. Later, the entire religion was completely cut off.
So there is currently no written record about its teachings and such content, not at all. The only thing left is the secret room where the ceremony was held, as well as the statue murals inside.
So in fact, even archaeologists now know very little about Mithraism. . . . Not to mention Mr. Lei. . .
Many key elements in the plot are not consistent with Mithraism.
For example, the last important element of the snake .
Snakes are indeed involved in the religious elements of Mithra, but they are completely incompatible with the plot in the play.
Some Mithra statues are suspected of engraving Mithra born from a snake-entangled stone (please fill in the brain for the grandson). Why are they suspicious, because Mithraism has no written records, and it is completely interpreted by later generations. .
But in any case, it contradicts the whole plot with the robot mother giving birth to a snake.
I personally think that due to the cultural environment of Uncle Lei, the metaphorical core of religious philosophy in this play is actually related to Christianity.
It is explained in detail in two points as follows:
1. Theism and atheism.
One of the main contradictions in the play is the contradiction between theism and atheism. Judging from the plot, in fact, neither side is noble, which ultimately leads to the destruction of the earth.
The first sacrifice to God in the Bible was not made by the first human Adam, but by the first generation of descendants Cain and Abel after Adam and Eve ate the "fruits of good and evil."
This naming the relationship between faith and the'good and evil'.
In my understanding, good and evil is a belief in abstract concepts without objective entities . Adam and Eve ate the fruits of good and evil, in fact, with the permission of God, she chose to gain the abstract power of faith.
In other words, only after eating the fruits of good and evil will you believe in abstract things.
On the contrary, only the objective and real things can be understood.
And if you choose to eat the fruit of life on another tree in the Garden of Eden, you can gain immortality and the powerful individual power that immortality brings.
Theism is actually a belief in abstraction. Of course, belief in love, family, tribe, nation, and country is also an abstract belief.
From this we can see that belief in abstraction is actually crucial to human beings. Without belief in abstraction, human beings cannot build a commendable civilization. This ability is to a certain extent inscribed in human genes.
In the film, Campion developed theism independently under the nurturing of an atheistic robot.
Although the two robots do not know it, they are actually "theists" with quotes. The "god" they believe in is actually love for children . Love has no objective entity and cannot describe its chemical and physical properties, but it is a powerful abstract force.
Of course, this belief in abstraction should be engraved in the two-person program by the human creator.
Later, the mother robot developed a more complex belief, that is , the "love of the human creator" and even the deification of the human creator . Of course, this belief is completely manipulated by the "old snake".
The "human creators" of the mother and father robots call themselves atheists, but they are also quoted theists. The god he believes in is the belief in human civilization, and even later began to believe in the love of the mother robot.
Although he should know the love of his mother's robot, it is actually a program written by himself. From the objective entity, it is just some code. But he couldn't help but believe in this kind of love.
All in all, I think what Uncle Lei wants to express is:
Humans or robots, as their essence, inevitably believe in abstract things. This is the foundation of civilization, which is engraved in genes and procedures. This ability can be a curse or a gift. It depends on how to use it.
2 The snake born by the mother robot.
Just like the words in the Bible in the title:
The big dragon is the ancient snake, its name is the devil and Satan, and it deceives the whole world.
This ancient snake is consistent with Lucifer, the fallen angel of Satan in the Bible. As an angel in the past, it has powerful power, and it is likely to have the power of the fruit of another tree in the Garden of Eden.
But hesitation does not have the power of good and evil, so although the individual is powerful and possesses the knowledge accumulated over a long life, the ancient snake does not have the power to build civilization.
Human beings take their offspring as their hope, and the hope of the ancient snake is that he can live forever.
It has two forms,
One is the signal wave carrying information memory. To put it more vividly is the "evil spirit" state. The evil spirit state can read the information in the minds of humans and robots, speak and produce hallucinations in their minds, but there is nothing else to do.
The second form is the ancient snake, which is an entity that hits the data stream, can fly, and grows huge in a few minutes. Very powerful at first glance.
In the evil spirit state, the ancient snake may not be able to survive for a long time or its ability is limited, so it needs to constantly parasitize the "necromantic robot" to become the ancient snake entity.
During the Roman Empire, the ancient snake pretended to be the "sun god Thor" and came into contact with Mithraism at that time. Through the provision of technology, Mithraism flourished.
But its fundamental purpose is not to allow Mithraism to multiply, but to hope that Mithraism will produce a large number of "necrotic robots" such as mothers. And bring these necrotic robots to the target star for themselves to parasitize.
The mother robot found the disgusting skeleton in the ancient snake-shaped helmet. If you look closely, you can see that it is not a human skull at all, but the same necromantic robot, because hundreds of years have passed. Even the skin of the robot was rotten, that's why it became like that.
Choosing parasitic and combative Necrobots instead of humans shows two things.
1 Ancient snakes cannot parasitize humans. Ancient snake entities may be silicon-based creatures and need to be manufactured in the body of robots. 2 Unlike robots, humans are not the creation of ancient snakes, but are probably the true creation of “gods”. The ancient snake may also be a "god" creation.
Judging from the murals discovered by the little boy Paul, the ancient snake may have planned a war between Mithra and atheism, forcing Mithra's Ark full of necromantic robots to flee to the target star.
What the ancient snake didn't expect was that the atheism arranged for the mother robot to also come. The mother robot also destroyed the Mithra's Ark, and all of Mithra's necromantic robots were damaged in the crash and could not be parasitic.
Fortunately, there is also the necromantic robot mother.
Since the Necrobot is the technology it gave to Mithraism, it is easy to use the mother robot to give birth to the ancient snake entity.
It is worth noting that the ancient snakes almost always use the memories and emotions of humans or robots to bewitched, which is very similar to the demons in the Bible.
Now that the devil has been reborn, whether it can be defeated by humans and robots depends on the next season.
