This is an excellent drama. There are some similarities with "Doll's House", and both explain the true meaning of love in family ethical events, except that "Doll's House" achieves a fierce and clear realistic political orientation by exposing the truth. "The East" discusses a more fundamental and abstract proposition through the realization of the biblical story, breaking the old beauty of divinity --- self-denial and restraint, and eulogizing the beauty of new humanity - desire and liberation.

There are two-by-two corresponding role images in the film: Father is a perfect social model, symbolizing the compassionate and superior "god", and his love is a selfish restraint constructed by himself as a criterion. This kind of love is The distinguishing feature is that he regards what he considers to be “good” as his “good” to others. His love cannot tolerate any of his own sacrifices, compromises, or concessions. In "House of Dolls", Nora's husband was furious because Nora borrowed privately, and easily exposed the hypocrisy and inequality of this "love"; so the mother broke through the cage in pursuit of freedom and equality, she should have been like Eve Taken from Adam’s ribs, it should be used as an attachment to such a fatherly family, yet unbearably tortured and bravely self-exiled; two brothers, one is the favored "Abel" and the other is the prejudiced "shen" "Yin", "Abel" lives in the "Garden of Eden" woven by his father, passively and docilely accepts the feeding of "love", and gradually becomes a person like his father. "Cain" is a person who wants to gain his heart. The beloved is a fanatical rebel who can do whatever it takes; and the fiancee of "Abel" who is entangled in inner conflicts between them can be regarded as a symbol of the value orientation chosen by the work itself.

In the end, the end of this story was completely opposite to the direction of the biblical story. "Abel" collapsed because he could not accept the truth that he had been living amidst lies, and went to the "East of Eden", but "Cain" got a near death. Father's forgiveness stayed by his side. When the love of "Abel"'s fiancée fell to "Cain", the main thrust of this film was already revealed.

The spiritual core of Western art works cannot be separated from the pursuit of freedom and equality. In particular, modern works express disgust with the stale moral concepts formed under the traditional agricultural economy, and often reflect those closed and conservative images that are lagging behind the development of the times by describing extreme rebellious behaviors, and are against the society that restrains and enslaves humanity. The structure, living environment, and ideological expression of dissatisfaction can be found in a large number of classic works.

I don't know if it should be said that Dean was lucky to meet this character, or that this character was lucky to meet Dean. In short, the result of mutual fulfillment has become the biggest attraction of the film. Dean's sensitive and slender interpretation gives the character a sense of tragedy. Sony Ericsson for his father and jealousy for his brother constitute the main contradiction of the show, and Kazan uses a lot of oblique compositions to strengthen the twisted relationship between the family.

The expectations were not high, but I didn't expect that the content (message), setting, shooting, and characters would be so good. Franco is really similar to James Dean... The coward who pretended to be upright & good actually created not heaven but hell for the other party but refused to face the reality had such a result and deserved it, but in the end it was actually quite ironic. Climbing the Ferris wheel immediately thought of Gosling!
