PKU-Video Appreciation-#3

It should be a movie I've watched three times-there are so few movies about chess. First of all, I want to complain about the Chinese translation of the name...what is messy, the original title Pawn Sacrifice is not only the term "abandoned soldier" in the national elephant, but at the same time, he himself has also become the abandoned soldier of the US-Soviet political game. However, this Chinese translation focused on the game in Reykjavik. Although this is the highlight of his life, it is far from all of him.

Comparing with "Beautiful Mind", you can find many similarities: Fischer and Nash both suffer from mental illness, and both have experienced a long period of incomprehension, and have also achieved a certain sense of success. But unlike Nash’s “imaginary enemy”, Fischer does have an “enemy”. The Soviet Union’s 25-year monopoly in the chess world was broken by him. He became an enemy of the Soviet Union, and due to political factors, the United States also abandoned him. , He became a political prisoner. So Fischer's image is actually more like Alan Turing in "The Imitation Game". Unfortunately, Turing has been rehabilitated, and Fischer is still controversial.

The fly in the ointment is that the climax (surprisingly winning) in this film is shown in words or side group portraits, which may not resonate with audiences who have no basis in chess. And the so-called "villain" in the film: Spassky, although Fischer's opponent is at the chess table, in fact, his life trajectory can also be said to be an "abandoned soldier". It's just a pity that this film is not his biography. Fortunately, the finishing touch at the end of the film: two heroes reunited two decades later, and Fischer made his life in Reykjavik, and slept there too-simple historical narrative, no performance, but Remind the audience that this is not too long ago; there is no comment, but the lingering sound is full of imagination.

A small detail: Although the chess board in Reykjavik in 1972 was simply skipped in a few shots in the movie, it was also restored in the movie.
