For Maggie, making a clear choice is obviously not that difficult. This 31-year-old woman lives in distress, her family is broken, and she has nothing. From the age of thirteen, she firmly believed that only boxing can lift her out of poverty and achieve her dream.
So she went to the boxing gym alone and met Frank and Eddie.
Although Frank was still reluctant to teach Maggie to punch, she still stayed, living in a dark house and living hard.
In a way, Maggie is a woman who is more stubborn than a stone. However, when I saw her gnawing the leftover steaks from customers, or when she looked at the tips left by the customers with a smile, I began to feel that this woman who was obsessed with dreams was so cute.
If Frank's daughter can understand her father, then everything that follows may not happen like that. I mean, if.
Frank still received the letter from his daughter intact on the same day every week. He didn't say anything, and he couldn't see the slightest mood swing. He just put it away and put it together with the previous letter.
I don't want to explain why Frank suddenly decided to teach Maggie boxing. I think he probably couldn't give a clear answer on his own. Because in many cases, there is no trace of emotion.
And what "Millions of Baby" is about to tell is the story about emotions that revolves around such two people.
Before watching the disc, I always thought of the heavyweight backing of the four Oscars in this film, and I felt a little dizzy in fear. Fortunately, Eastwood's shots are still deep and unpretentious. In addition, the three protagonists are uniquely talented, and they are not overly ostentatious while performing powerfully.
The only vertigo came from the pale lights on the ring. Maggie slammed her fist again and again, knocking her opponent to the ground. Like those trance rays, I don't know if she really felt the joy of victory at that moment, or if she just wanted to forget the reality for the time being in the cheers of the audience.
There are also those players who have been knocked down and whose faces have been forgotten. They are supporting roles here and they are of course abandoned. But, how many bloody and tearful stories behind that you don’t know?
In fact, everyone is the same. Who knows what kind of pain is behind those glamorous appearances.
For example, Frank, who loves his daughter deeply but cannot be forgiven. For example, Maggie has a mean mother and younger brother. For example, Eddie, who lost an eye in boxing and then went into obscurity. Also, the female boxer who attacked Maggie was so afraid of failure and loneliness after losing her supporter.
The audience cheered and sang and danced in the audience. The boxer stood on the stage, standing in the bright light, like a god.
There is almost no music in the movie, only the clamor of objects fighting and the dull and heavy sound of fists hitting the body. In fact, this is the real life of a boxer. How happy do you say they can be?
Learning boxing, teaching boxing, in the final analysis, are just consolation.
From start to finish, Eddie is the only one who keeps a clear head. Since losing an eye in a boxing match twenty years ago, his heart has become extremely clear. Then, with the remaining eye, he saw the rapid rise, glory, burning, and fall of one boxer after another. Only he understands how happy and luxurious it is to live in peace.
That's why he tried to persuade Maggie to stay away from boxing.
But that is superfluous after all, for those who have never gotten it, let alone lose it? Old and deep as Frank, in order to get the love that he had never received in his daughter, he blindly walked on the road of moths to the fire as usual.
Not to mention Maggie. She found unprecedented care in this seemingly indifferent old man. This allowed her to temporarily forget the bitterness of her mother and the snobbery of her brothers. Perhaps the initial insistence to follow was also because of the faint shadow of a loving father on Frank.
Victory is not so important. The important thing is that two people depend on each other. The important thing is that Frank's last sentence to Maggie-
I love you.
After saying this, Frank gently kissed Maggie's right cheek. Then, he injected Maggie with the medicine very firmly. Maggie stared at him with a strange look. If she could still speak, she would say thank you or sorry, I don't know.
But there was a smile on her face, which was still so brilliant until Frank turned and walked into the darkness.
Yeah, it's time to leave. The game failed, the body was paralyzed, the desire to reconcile with his family was shattered, and the road in the future seemed so dim. But why do you still feel happy? Perhaps it is because there is one person who can cry for himself and say the three most beautiful words in the world.
enough.
The music plays and the story ends.
Because this dark ending subverted traditional family values, and boldly discussed "euthanasia", the film encountered unprecedented resistance from disabled groups after it was released. I thought it was superfluous. It is precisely because of this ending that the film breaks out of the framework of traditional sports inspirational films and rises to an unprecedented height. What's more, Clint Eastwood didn't mean it. What he wanted to tell was actually a story about how some people find their emotional home, a story about those lonely people warming each other in the world.
I remembered "This Killer Is Not So Cold" for no reason. In fact, the two have a lot in common. They are all male and female protagonists with very different ages. The male protagonist looks indifferent, and the heroine is in a miserable situation. In the end, they all find love, even if all of them die. Although "Millions of Baby" mainly talks about family affection, and "This Killer Is Not So Cold" focuses on love, the same thing is that both are becoming increasingly rare in real life.
I have always liked watching movies like this because I feel a little warm. In such a world, the short and weak human life always carries too many pursuits and dreams. Busy, stumbling, stumbling, exhausted, and so exhausted that I even forgot-
love is another kind of dream for everyone.
