I knew Bernini from comedies such as "Toothpick Gioni" in the early years. I thought he was just a clown comedian. Until I saw this masterpiece written, directed and acted by him, I didn’t realize this ugly Italian. His extraordinary talent, at least after Chaplin, I can't think of anyone who can melt the brilliance of human nature into a tearful smile with such a heavy romance. Perhaps the old French man can count as half.
World War II was the darkest night in human modern history, and the reason why people in the flames of war were able to bravely wait for the dawn to come was based more on the optimism of love than on the atomic bombs of the allies. The seemingly absurd romance of Southern Europeans is more touching than the bloody slaughter in "Schindler's List", and it is not what Yankees who are enamored with war movies that promote force can understand. The beauty of life is not at the peak of glory, but the shimmering light that flickers in the dark night.
By the way: Cecchi Gorri's studio has fallen, which is a pity.
