deeper than the sea

"Deeper than the Sea", the small fire on the coal stove, the frozen drinks in the refrigerator, the familiar furnishings in the kitchen, the uphill arm in front of the house, the grandma on the balcony, and the parents who are talking about it. Failed to get into a good school, irretrievable marriage. When the typhoon passed, I never loved a person deeper than the sea, and I failed to realize the simple ideals of my childhood, but I still lived an ordinary and happy life. It is Hirokazu Kore-eda's films that are like unboiled white water, never boiling emotions, but full and real. The pictures of life-like detail control have no resistance, each one is a masterpiece!

Like the perspective of the four people on the main poster, the description of the characters in the whole film is restrained and withdrawn. Very everyday, very bland, can't even find a big point of conflict. What's particularly good is that the male protagonist did not cheer up from the waste wood at the end, the lottery ticket did not win the 300 million jackpot, and the separated family did not reorganize. However, this is life, there are no shortcuts or miracles, only to feel everything in the flow of time.

too tender. A story where almost nothing happens, but every detail is moving. The ice that could not be cut at grandma's house, a pair of spiked shoes that were intentionally worn out, my colleague laughingly tossed coins into the video game machine, the party under the slide on a typhoon day, and the ending song with the lyrics that fit the scene, made me cry in the movie theater Trembling all over. How many people can grow up to become the person they originally imagined? But the kindness and warmth of life will not change because of this

After the Storm quotes

  • Shinoda Yoshiko: I wonder why it is that men can't love the present. Either they just keep chasing whatever it is they've lost... or they keep dreaming beyond their reach.

  • Shinoda Ryôta: The lottery isn't gambling.

Shiraishi Kyôko: Of course it is.

Shinoda Ryôta: No, it is not.

Shiraishi Kyôko: What is it, then?

Shinoda Ryôta: It's a dream. A dream you buy for 300 Yen.
