And this "Face", which is also in the Chinese-American circle, also has family ties, but it is full of life and vitality, and the sadness is more humorous and comedy. Alice Wu, who quit her high-paying job at Microsoft for the movie, is as concerned about life and women as Wayne Wang, but with a very different style. But they make me happy.
The film mainly discusses two issues.
One is the mother-daughter bond.
Chen Chong's acting skills are delusional, she and the character are one. The mother's name in the film is "Mom", and this is the director's best interpretation of the mother-daughter relationship. Wil and Mom's living habits are out of tune. Mom asks Wil in Chinese but always gets an English answer. Finally one day, Wil stared at his mother and said you are beautiful. This discovery came too late, but fortunately it was discovered. Wil encourages Mom to pursue her love, and Mom no longer opposes Wil's sexuality.
The second is the issue of face that both Chinese and foreigners have to talk about. Maybe the Chinese take this more seriously.
Professors and doctors are all decent jobs, and such a decent family naturally doesn't want something that goes against common sense and becomes gossip of others. Mom knew that Wil was gay, but she never mentioned it, and kept arranging blind dates for her, naively trying to save her. Fathers do the same. A father swept his pregnant daughter out of the house while looking for her husband to marry as soon as possible. Another father had his heart set on making his modern-dance-loving daughter a great ballet dancer. We can't blame them for anything wrong. Hope the girl is full of love for her daughter. We can only attribute the fault to "face". Wil didn't dare to kiss Vivian in public at first. Mom even hoped to match her daughter and Xiaoyu at the subway station, which is the best explanation. Fortunately, there are lovers who finally get married, Mom and Xiaoyu, Wil and Vivian, and they are not as sad as "The Joy Luck Club". At the end, my grandfather told Mom and Wil that when the child was born, he would check at home every day to prevent the child from being tainted by bad habits. And Mom told Wil even more, just waiting for her to add a grandson to her. And when Lao Yu put his hand on his grandfather's shoulder before, both of them couldn't help feeling a little different. Such an easy ending makes me laugh.
However, Wil's character setting is a bit far-fetched, and I don't understand why she pretends to faint in the face of Vivian's enthusiasm, if she had sex with her girlfriend at home a few years ago, and her mother found out. Also, is a 28-year-old intern acting a little too immature? But overall, the film is pretty good, edgy but not deadly.
In the end, it takes courage and time to learn to challenge secular views, like Wil and Vivian at a social gathering.
