Revisiting "Face" compared to "Half Understanding"

➤Compared with "Half Understanding", the two works have a lot in common:

1. Neither film is gay-centric, but one of the protagonists happens to be gay. The characters in the film have different backgrounds and different stories, but they have to face all kinds of troubles in life. The focus of the test of "Half Understanding" is inner growth, while "Face" is more about the external environment.

2. The plot of the film and the character of the first protagonist have director Wu's own shadow, partly from her own experience.

3. The characters in the story live very much like the Chinese in the eyes of Americans, and in their bones they are like the Chinese in our eyes.

4. There are opposite characters in the play, but they are not annoying and even a little cute.

5. The climax of the story breaks out in a relatively large scene. This kind of group portrait description is more impactful and interesting for ordinary life.

6. TV shows are used in the stories to insinuate reality. It is used a lot in "Face". The communication between Xiaowei and her mother happened when they watched TV together. Every time, the TV program naturally pushed the whole story forward. In "Half Understanding", the communication between Chu Chu and his father is also sitting and watching TV together, but the innuendo on TV has become less and more obscure.

7. One of the major advancements in the plot all happened in the clothing store. Xiaowei and Vivian went from being ambiguous to falling in love; Chuchu showed himself at school, and Paul found subtle changes in his feelings. (What happened to Director Wu in the clothing store?)

8. Although with the changes of the times, the difference between the two films is quite large, but the color tone still seems to have a little Shaw's taste.

9. The lens uses mirroring skillfully.

10. There is nothing that a meal of dumplings can't solve! The soul of the nation~

Other things about: the generation gap between the protagonist and his parents, the differences in the integration of immigrants and ABC in the environment, the attitude of the people around them towards homosexuality, etc... It does not seem to be the common point of these two works, but similar works are compared. Common.

➤ Differences in shooting:

There are many group portraits in "Face", which are quite exciting. All kinds of people in the scene form a very typical environment, and people can immediately feel the atmosphere of "everyone loves face". But also due to too many roles, it is a little face-off.

And "Half Understanding" pays more attention to individual description and psychological description. There are few group portrait descriptions, but the individual characters are fuller and more three-dimensional.

As the plot goes up, "Face" feels a little more immature. The director uses the TV series watched by his mother to connect the story and plot, and each time it happens to refer to the problems in their lives ( watching the yellow video tape is really a bit of joy XD ), the method is a bit To put it bluntly, in "Half Understanding", this blunt feeling disappeared, and the method was more natural.

➤ Personally think the wonderful place of this film:

The theme of the film is reflected everywhere: "face". Xiaowei's grandfather, a highly respected figure in the community, her 48-year-old daughter was furious after her pregnancy and felt that she had lost all her face (at this time, her grandmother only cared about her daughter's health); Xiaowei's mother, even with someone she loved Having a child, she does not dare to break through the mundane vision to pursue happiness, and still endure her father's arrangements; Xiaowei, when she is in a relationship, she is afraid to let others see it, and she does not dare to come out to her family to maintain her family. Face; Vivian's father, proud of his daughter's ballet dancing, persuaded her daughter to leave for the sake of her daughter's better development; Mom's Ma friends, who always spread other people's scandals together, knew that Xiaowei's mother was pregnant Later, they all hid far away. Later, Xiaowei's mother had a young and handsome boyfriend, and they all came back to learn from the scriptures...

➤ When it comes to this, I want to mention that my grandmother is really cute. She is the only person in Xiaowei's family who doesn't care about face from beginning to end. She is very upright, candid, and very interesting. "Look at how comfortable these shoes are. I had such a pair during the war."

At the end of the story, everyone is HAPPY ENDING.
