At the beginning of this year, "The Listening Girl", which shined at the famous independent film festival in the United States at the Sundance Film Festival, won the Grand Jury Award, the Jury Special Award, and the audience's vote with the protagonist's touching growth story and novel themes. Award and four awards for best director, and a high score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, a well-known American film review website.

The main focus of the film is Ruby (Emilia Jones), a high school student. As the only audible daughter in a deaf-mute family, Ruby is kind and filial. She not only helps maintain the family livelihood of her father and brother by fishing, but is also an important bridge for the family to communicate with the outside world. It is responsible for the bodily functions of the family's "mouth" and "ears".

Except that the soundtrack is rarely used in the whole film, it chooses to mute it at the final climax of the concert, so that the audience can see her daughter's performance on stage and the giving of others from the perspective of Ruby's family without hearing any sound. A positive response, knowing Ruby's talent and hard work through her own eyes, to eliminate conflicts and contradictions between them. In the end, Ruby not only won the judges' favor with her perfect singing voice, but also conveyed the lyrics to the family members who supported her in her dream pursuit in sign language. She has also finally found a balance between reality and dreams, as well as the true meaning of her love for singing and the hope that she can express her unexpressed emotions through singing.

On the whole, "Listening Girl" not only has beautiful songs, but in the case of the adaptation of the French film "The Belliers", with a natural and fun plot design, with the heroine Emilia Jones. Ruby's lack of self-confidence and chasing dreams, hoping to change the status quo pulling state is quite well explained. While telling the struggle between family and dreams, the film also delicately depicts the growth of a young girl. His warm and inspirational style is definitely worth a look.

Frank Rossi: Can you sing it for me?

  • Ruby Rossi: [signing] Did you ever wish I was deaf?

Jackie Rossi: [signing] When you were born, at the hospital, they gave you a hearing test. And there you were, so tiny and sweet, with those electrodes all over you. And I... prayed that you would be deaf. When they told us that you were hearing, I felt... My heart sank.

    Ruby Rossi: [signing] Why?

Jackie Rossi: [signing] I was worried that we wouldn't connect. Like me and my mom, we're not close. I thought I would fail you. That being deaf would make me a bad mom.

Ruby Rossi: [signing] Don't worry. You are a bad mom for so many other reasons.

    [They laugh]
