"The Hearing Girl" is based on the French film "Bélière Home", which was purchased by AppleTV+ after its premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. And was nominated for Best Picture at this year's Oscars. The deaf characters in the film are played by real deaf actors, and the actress Mary Matline, who plays her mother, is also the first deaf actress to win an Oscar for best actress.

Hearing girl, as the name suggests, is a person who can hear the voice in the eyes of the hearing impaired. The title of the film CODA means Children of Deaf Adults. The girl Ruby grew up in a special family. Her parents and brother are both hearing impaired. , but she has normal hearing and acts as an interpreter at home. Like singing, the talented Ruby dreams of going to Berklee College of Music to go to college, but her family's fishing business can't be done without her being in charge of interpretation. Ruby is faced with a choice.

This is a typical American theme movie, focusing on the hearing-impaired and disabled people. But the story does not fall into the stereotypes. Between the fetters of the real family and the choice of dreams, the collision between the silent and the sound is visualized.

What impressed me the most was the part of the relatives who went to see Ruby's performance. At first, there was sound. When the camera focused on the relatives, the sound disappeared completely, and silent scenes began to appear. Ruby's relatives were all. Deaf people, this paragraph is quite cleverly designed.

This is about how to choose between family reality and dream, Ruby chose the former, but the family used their silent support to help Ruby realize her dream.

The thing that moved me the most in the film was that, as a deaf parent, I never really listened to music at all, and even wondered if Ruby really had the talent to sing. In the school theater, Ruby sang on stage. My father and brother sat under the stage and couldn't hear the singing on stage at all. This part of the director made a silent treatment. My father watched the other audiences because of Ruby's singing. In the evening, the father asked his daughter to sing the song to her again. The father touched his daughter's neck and felt the daughter's singing through vibration. compared to other Oscar films. "Listening Girl" looks like a lot of "simple" at first glance, there is no "deep" theme, gorgeous audio-visual language, and no big-name actors or big-name directors. But the simple story itself is enough to move people.

We need stories like this, and the masses need stories like this.

  • Frank Rossi: The song you sang tonight. What was it about?

Ruby Rossi: It was about... what it is to need another person.

Frank Rossi: Can you sing it for me?

  • Ruby Rossi: [signing] Did you ever wish I was deaf?

Jackie Rossi: [signing] When you were born, at the hospital, they gave you a hearing test. And there you were, so tiny and sweet, with those electrodes all over you. And I... prayed that you would be deaf. When they told us that you were hearing, I felt... My heart sank.

    Ruby Rossi: [signing] Why?

Jackie Rossi: [signing] I was worried that we wouldn't connect. Like me and my mom, we're not close. I thought I would fail you. That being deaf would make me a bad mom.

Ruby Rossi: [signing] Don't worry. You are a bad mom for so many other reasons.

    [They laugh]
