ACT UP is the abbreviation of AIDS COALITION TO UNLEASH POWER, which means AIDS (patient), unite, outbreak (huge) power. The AIDS civil work organization established in New York State on March 29, 1988, clearly stated in 1988 that it "adopts political vigilance measures and cultural stimulation to meet the challenges of the AIDS epidemic and the corresponding moral crisis, so as to promote the development of human beings." A fundamental creative desire speaks volumes.” It defines itself as “ACT UP is a diverse, non-partisan organization, a collection of angry people, that implements direct action to end the AIDS crisis.” ACT UP There are independent organizations in various places. This film is about how people in the organization ACT UP Paris have demonstrated and fought to fight for the rights of AIDS, especially gay AIDS patients.
For such social groups, I always have a feeling of reverence. They dared to stand up, challenge governments and big pharma for the disadvantaged and marginalized, standing proudly in the crowd, giving speeches and handing out leaflets. Their slogan is: Silence equals death. Therefore, the internal meetings of this organization are also very active, and everyone actively expressed their opinions on the debate on the action plan and the discussion on the theme of the parade. To ensure that each member's voice is heard, they even have simultaneous sign language interpretation to help deaf members understand issues and express themselves.
Most of the people in the group are gay. The reason why this film is special is that it does not promote the ACT UP organization, but through a pair of gay couples in the organization as the main line to show the struggle. Everyone has flesh and blood and will cry. Will laugh and be afraid, fall in love and play temper tantrum.
The couple who told the main line of the story moved me in a few moments:
1: Sean was sitting in the carriage with a group of people, he looked out the window at the evening scenery of Paris, it was really beautiful, he said that AIDS has changed His life, the world has more color, sound and vitality. He muttered to himself, and Nathan looked at him in a trance.
2: When the school handed out brochures, after being insulted by a girl as "glass", Sean picked up Nathan and kissed him without a word. So cool, it was their first kiss, and Sean's tiny body had so much energy. Nathan smiled sweetly and recalled the sudden happiness
3: Nathan told Sean about his past relationship, he mentioned the boyfriend who might have AIDS and was admitted to the hospital, Sean said with tears in his eyes that I was either alive or dead .
4: When Sean's condition became more serious, Nathan went to the beach with him. The whole picture was extended to the sea in the distance. The figure was small in the picture into two small black dots, there was no dialogue, only the sound of the waves. They feel the impact of waves of waves, which is a kind of confrontation and a kind of release.
5: Sean was very ill, lying in the hospital bed, he said he was in pain, not sure if it was because of fear. Nathan didn't know how to comfort him, so he could only stroke him, from his chest to his belly, all the way down, and then start helping Sean jerk off. After ejaculation, Sean laughed, his eyes became blurred, dark green eyes like calm lake water, without a trace of ripples. I think it was the last time he felt he was alive.
6: Sean returned home from illness, and there was no conversation, just busy voices. Before going to bed, he said lightly to Nathan: I'm ready, don't be angry about it. Then Nathan started injecting an overdose of morphine into Sean's body. There is no heart-wrenching difference between life and death, only a kind of calmness, a calmness that faces the dripping blood.
7: When Sean died, the members of ACT UP arrived one after another. They came to discuss the funeral arrangements. Some were making coffee, some were reading the eulogy just written, some were smoking, some were hungry and wanted something to eat, Sean He just lay there in the next room. This is not insensitive, this is a situation that ACT UP encounters every moment.
The film has a lot of montage effects that are particularly stunning, viral and dance floors, sex and parades. Using 120 beats-per-minute music, the film has a rhythm, a deep love and intense rage.
