"Nanuk of the North" is the pioneering work of a documentary film. For the first time, the daily activities of human beings are put on the screen as the object of shooting, which makes the documentary film appear on the stage of history as an independent film form. After watching the whole film, let’s briefly talk about some of the characteristics of the film. 1. Text (Black Field) Narrative The most prominent feature of "Nanuk in the North" should be that the text description runs through the entire film, and the content to be displayed in the next link is explained in the form of a black field. This feature does not appear in other non-documentary films and later documentaries, which weakens the narrative role of images to some extent. 2. Lenses and scenes The whole film uses fixed lenses. For example, when the Nanook family filed out of the boat, there was no change in the lens, and the whole process was shot directly in front. The conversion of the whole film is simple and direct. For example, in the description of the ignition process, after the panorama explains the background around the igniter, a close-up of the ignition appears directly, and then immediately returns to the panorama to end the process. The panorama of the canoe-making process, the close-up of the stitching, the medium shot of the tying line, and the large panorama of the trek to the seaside are simple, without leaving the water. 3. Music Participates in Narrative
There is no dialogue in the whole film to promote the development of the narrative. The music runs through the whole film and participates in the narrative of the film. For example, some idyllic scenes such as boating mostly use lyrical tunes with a gentle rhythm to express a peaceful life scene. The scenes such as listening to the gramophone and biting a big fish use cheerful tunes to show the inner excitement of the characters. Music and dynamic single percussion sound interspersed, giving full play to the narrative role of music. Fourth, the introduction of dramatic elements The introduction of dramatic elements strengthens the narrative and plot of the film, making the documentary not simply in the state of "recording", but adding the director's personal perception, which combines the plot and interest in ordinary movies sex, so that the viewing of documentaries has been improved. For example, the process of pulling a walrus is quite dramatic, arousing people's curiosity and making people laugh. (Weekly homework series)
