Nanook of the North is a movie with a long history. Flaherty's shooting thought is undoubtedly revealed in this film, and its status as the first true documentary in film history shows its charm.
First of all, truth, the truth of a documentary is its source. Nanook only made it roughly true. I think it could have been more realistic, but the director made some changes for the dramatic effect and the box office, which is why many people questioned Nanook. The reason for the status is also the reason why Nanook has been controversial. The Nanook family eventually starved to death because they did not stock up enough food to shoot the movie. The original sin of the documentary.
Second, the long lens. Flaherty is a big fan of long shots, just like me, haha. There are many long shots in it, which fully show the life of Nanook's family. Long shots often make the movie more real.
On the other hand, some of the current documentaries are not as good as the black and white silent film Nanook in the north.
