Plot analysis of the seventh episode of the second season of "Westworld" (with a timeline) - the fun of reading the story is to discover the ending by yourself

Jerel 2022-12-27 09:14:00

The following is a spoiler for this episode, and then I roughly sort out what happened after the night of the massacre (as of this episode), and plan to reorganize the story and timeline for two seasons after the season is over.

In the second season, all the receptionists and humans entered into a new storyline set by Ford, "Journey to the Dark Night." As the name suggests, this game is a heavy quest for every receptionist and human being: how to find the door to light and freedom? Does it mean that the good nature must be sealed in order not to be swallowed by darkness?

In this episode, Bernard asks a question that has been bothering everyone for a long time: "It seems that most of the receptionists and humans are going to this place, the Valley of Glory. What will they find there? How will the story end?"

Ford didn't answer explicitly, but said this: "The joy of reading a story is finding the ending for yourself." For the receptionists and humans in the play, they need to go through their own experiences to find the meaning of life; for the audience to come It is said that discussing the connotation of the plot every week and guessing the direction of the story is precisely the greatest joy of chasing dramas.

Ford's true purpose is the biggest suspense in the whole show. In this episode, he said to Bernard: "God did not rest on the seventh day. He was proud of his creation, knowing that one day, this place will be destroyed." Did Ford realize the park was a mistake and just wanted to destroy it? I'm afraid his idea is not so simple and crude. "One sand sees the world, one flower peeks into heaven, one holds infinity in the palm of one's hand, and takes eternity for a moment. " Apparently, he was the God who spied on opportunities and controlled everything in the park.

The story of this episode is divided into two timelines: one is two weeks later, and the other is the seventh day after Carnage Night.

One week after Slaughter Night (Day 7)

1.

Ford and Bernard had a relatively informative conversation in the Cradle (also translated as Breeding Layer, Mother Nest, located in the basement of the Mesa Control Center), which explained some of the doubts in the previous episodes.

First, on the eve of the massacre, Bernard was controlled by Ford to go to the underground secret laboratory No. 12 to take away the little red ball, which was the control unit of Ford that he printed.

From S02E01, Bernard found that Delos Company secretly recorded and uploaded tourists’ experience data and DNA in the underground laboratory 14, and S02E02 William persuaded his father-in-law to invest in the park, and we can roughly guess what the secret project of Delos Company is. . In addition to surveillance, but also to achieve human immortality.

The receptionist was the reference, following a fixed-cycle storyline for 30 years, and the tourists were the variables. What Delos is really doing isn't coding receptionists, it's decoding tourists: seeing their real selves, and then copying them.

The Delos company's experiment was unsuccessful. They could copy and back up every piece of information, but they couldn't really copy the human brain. Even if they copied the brain, it would no longer be as flexible and intelligent as before. After a few experiments, you can see the clue.

Ford would prefer to stay in the cradle as he is now, if in the real world he would be as degraded and even mad as Jim.

After Arnold's death, Ford tested Bernard's authenticity in his cradle with a German sister for many years, until Bernard was exactly the Arnold that Dolores remembered.

Ford has been teaching Bernard in a guiding way, such as letting him leave Elsie and shutting down the operating system bravely, without thinking about the consequences of doing so, which will allow Demei to do whatever she wants.

Ford also manipulated Bernard to kill the staff who stopped along the way, and he also took great pains not to let Bernard fall into self-blame.

Bernard is different from ordinary receptionists. He is an initial work, and his upright and noble nature is destined to be unsuitable for living in a park where the strong eat the weak. To be strong, he must abandon his indecision and soft-hearted side.

Compared with the German sister who forcibly changed Teddy's attributes, Ford's trick is quite clever.

2.

Although the security brother Stubbs has a low position and authority, in order to know the truth, he dared to threaten the directors, and he was completely afraid of no one.

Demei led the team into the control center. She knew about the key in Abernathy's brain, how to use the key, and even the human immortality project researched by Delos.

Demei asked Angela to completely destroy the Cradle, she thought: "Our backup is not an advantage, it is the shackles that bind us."

This also explains why in S02E05, two weeks after the night of the slaughter, for the receptionist whose body data was deleted, no data could be recovered from the nurturing layer.

Angela can be said to be the hero of the park. She entertained Logan on behalf of Demei, and brought the first investment for the park. She also received William at the entrance of the station. She ended with the phrase "Welcome to Westworld". It makes me sad.

Charlotte Hale mentioned that if these receptionists are not backed up, being killed means complete death and there is almost no possibility of resurrection, so Angela and Clementine said a tragic farewell.

Demei took away the control unit in Abernathy's brain. She said goodbye to her father Abernathy, and she was also saying goodbye to her past self, which meant that the remaining tenderness and kindness in her heart would no longer exist.

Abernathy said another thought-provoking line: "A new flame can put out the old, and new pain can alleviate the old pain." The receptionist of the park has experienced a sad past, so they seek revenge by means of revenge. , Can you get real happiness by healing yourself with human grief?

3.

Maeve and William, who were chased by the Indians in the "Land of Ghosts", were friends. William seemed to be suffering from Ford's disorder. When he saw everything, he thought that it was a receptionist controlled by Ford to set him up.

Maeve didn't miss this perfect opportunity, but she never thought that her revenge plan was disrupted by the security team brought by Lee Heathmore, and her daughter was also captured by the Indians of the "Land of Ghosts".

Maeve's ability to control the receptionist is very deep, and a few words can incite Lawrence to defect. Lawrence, who suddenly turned against the water, made William miserable, and even almost received a lunch box. This is really karma, and people always have to pay for their faults.

Lee Heathmore developed a subtle emotion when he got along with Maeve. After all, Maeve was different from other receptionists, which also made him feel compassion to save Maeve.

Maeve and Demei, who were sent to the control center, met unexpectedly. This was their second meeting. Demei was very surprised when she looked at the injured Maeve. She had to know that Maeve in her eyes was the woman who would do anything to survive, but now it seemed that Demei herself was the woman who would do anything to survive.

Demei believes that it is her daughter that gives Maeve a weakness, and that emotions are the ropes that humans use to limit them. Maeve retorts with Teddy, who has changed her temperament, thinking that Demei has completely lost herself in the dark.

Demei said that she could see the road ahead more clearly because she stayed in the dark for too long. Compared with the tough Rameve who met the German sister for the first time, she respects Maeve's decision this time. These two collision concepts may have the same goal in the future.

two weeks after massacre

Still obsessed with finding the truth, the security guy Stubbs discovered that the operations secretary, Carl Strand, was not searching for survivors, but protecting the company's research projects.

He informed Bernard of his thoughts and wanted Bernard to help him find the satellite communication equipment hidden in Teresa's office, so that he could get in touch with the outside world.

Stubbs didn't think he was the suspect in killing Teresa, he and Bernard were taken to Ford's basement (where S01E07 Bernard killed Teresa), they found multiple scraps Bernard, Bernard's receptionist's identity is accidentally revealed.

Hale used the operation of the control panel to separate Bernard's real memory from the imposed memory, and during Bernard's interrogation, she learned that Abernathy's control unit was in Division 16 of the Fourth District.

Karl Strand then said that they were going back to the valley, which shows that this location is near the valley (Valley of Glory) they went to in S02E01.

Whether Bernard's words are true or not is unknown. Whether he is sober or confused at this time is still uncertain, and there are still many mysteries surrounding Bernard.

Judging from the preview, it seems that the next episode will focus more on the line of "Land of Ghosts", and the leader of "Land of Ghosts" is expected to occupy the main role.

In S02E02, he went with Angela to see Arkochita, who was successfully invested by Logan. In S02E04, he let go of the security brother Stubbs. He said something thoughtful, and in S02E06 he wanted to take Mei. Fu, also said: "We are destined to go down the same path."

The "Land of Ghosts" is not controlled by the system, and people are forcibly taken away and protected. Are they really Ford's royal army? The answer may be revealed in the next episode.

Finally, roughly sort out the timeline from the beginning of the night of the massacre (as of S02E07):

From the night of the massacre to the arrival of the rescue team within two weeks

German sister Teddy

On the night of the Demei massacre, Ford was shot and killed, beginning the receptionist's rebellion. (S02E10)

The next day, Demei chased and killed humans and told Teddy that she wanted revenge and her plan to dominate the human world. (S02E01)

Angela, the beautiful receptionist under Demei, deliberately let the human tourists go, and followed him to the underground repair warehouse in District 19. Here, in order to let Teddy understand the truth, Demei shows him the photos of her own death N times. (S02E02)

After a comprehensive system failure, the park will take emergency measures to recover the park at one time. Everyone will gather at a rally point, which is suspected to be the location of the Valley of Glory. (S02E02)

Demei returned to Sweetwater Town and forcibly changed Teddy's attributes (S02E05).

Teddy becomes ruthless, and they then board the train to Mesa to rescue Abernathy at the campus control center. (S02E06)

Demei broke into the Mesa control center, took the control unit in Abernathy's brain, destroyed the cradle that stored the data, and ran to the Valley of Glory with Teddy and his men. (S02E07)

There is also a specific storyline that has not yet been determined: two weeks later, Carl Strand, director of operations of the Delos Company, and his party saw the video 11 days ago, which is about the third day after the night of the massacre. An Indian also said a sentence: "Not all people can cross the valley.". (S02E01)

Maeve

Maeve returned from the train to the control center on the night of the massacre, where she met screenwriter Lee Heathmore. Hector (S02E01) is found on the top floor the next day, and the trio encounter Demei and a group of people (S02E02) on their way to find Maeve's daughter.

Maeve, Hector, and Lee Heathmore encounter Indians by the river, whom Maeve cannot control. The Indians could let Maeve and Hector go, but insisted that screenwriter Lee Heathmore would go with them, saying there was no place for him in the new world. (S02E03)

Maeve needs the living map of Lee Heathmore to guide her, and the three flee to the basement, where they meet Serpentine, Felix, and Sylvester. In the evening, the six people continued their journey, but were captured by the Japanese ronin Musashi. (S02E03)

Maeve and the other six were taken to the shogunate world and were shocked to find another self. Here, Maeve unlocks the superpower to control the receptionist without using words. Lee Heathmore took the opportunity to steal the walkie-talkie from the security guard who died on the side of the road. Maeve helps Madame Xi kill the general and his subordinates to avenge the death of her adopted daughter Sakura. (S02E05)

After Musashi singled out Tanaka, everyone came to Snow Lake. Musashi and Mrs. Akane decided to stay in the shogunate world. Maeve and her group arrived at District 15, where Maeve's daughter lived through the tunnel. (S02E06)

Maeve finds her daughter, but finds that her original mother's position has been replaced by someone, and then she encounters the Indians in the "land of ghosts". Lee Heathmore tried to use the walkie-talkie to contact the outside world for assistance. (S02E06)

Maeve, who was chased by the "Land of Ghosts", met her friend William, was interrupted by the security team brought by screenwriter Lee Heathmore, and her daughter was taken away by the "Land of Ghosts". The seriously injured Maeve was rescued by Lee Heathmore and brought to the Mesa Control Center, where she met Demei for the second time. (S02E07)

The Man in Black William's daughter Emily (Grace)

On the night of the massacre, Clementine hit William in black in the arm. (S01E10)

The next day, William got up from the pile of corpses in the pub square, saw the wolf dog, then exploded the wound, put on a black hat and a weapon. On the way, I met little Ford to guide the way, and started a new game journey. (S02E01)

William saves Lawrence again, taking a cheat first aid kit on the way. (S02E02)

He also told Lawrence about his future plans with confidence. (S02E02)

They go to Paria to recruit a new version of El Lazzo ("Breaking Bad" Fried Chicken), but the other party commits suicide en masse under Ford's control. (S02E02).

They came to Lawrence's hometown again, the barren town of Las Mudas. They were both captured by the Southern Army. William finally rescued the Lawrence family. The group met their daughter Emily on the way. (S02E04)

On the eve of the night of the massacre, Emily was at the Six India campus, testing whether her companion was the receptionist. The receptionist rebelled the next day, and Emily was attacked by a Bengal tiger on the way to escape and fell into the sea. After drifting ashore, she was captured by the Indians in the country of ghosts. (S02E03)

Emily meets Stubbs, a security brother who was also captured, and then she successfully escapes to find her father William. (S02E04)

The father and daughter started a heart-to-heart conversation. Emily said that her purpose in coming to the park was to bring William home, but William left her daughter and went on the road the next morning. (S02E06)

William, who was chased by the "land of ghosts", met his victim Maeve, and experienced Lawrence's rebellion, and he was lucky enough to save his life. (S02E07)

Bernard Hale Elshey

On the night of the massacre, the receptionists rebelled (not all the receptionists woke up, but a system set up by Ford to make the receptionists default to these human tourists as receptionists), Bernard was pushed over by the tourists and hit his head in order to save the receptionist groom that night , the ear discharges cerebral cortical fluid (S02E01).

Bernard and Charlotte Hale escaped from the night of the massacre to the next day, all the way to the underground secret laboratory 14 (S02E01).

Hale changed into a set of clothes, the yellow skirt was replaced by a white shirt and a black vest. Bernard discovered that there were also labor receptionists secretly hidden here, and the company secretly recorded visitor experience data and DNA. (S02E01)

The two could only work together to find Abernathy, because the company couldn't send a rescue team to the campus without Abernathy. (S02E01)

Abernathy and a few others were captured by "Old Trey" Rebs and "Milk Man" Walter, and Bernard changed Rebs' stat parameters, turning him into a man of agility and good character. (S02E03)

Just when Bernard and Hale were about to capture Abernathy, the Confederate generals Bernard and Abernathy who joined forces with Demei captured Bernard and Abernathy, and the two of them met Demei. (S02E03)

The escaped Charlotte Hale came to Area 21 and joined the security team here to snatch Abernathy in the battle of the fortress with Demei. (S02E03)

Bernard, who wanted to take advantage of the chaos, was forcibly dragged by Clementine to the cave in Area 22, where Elsie was also. She was attacked and caught here by Bernard. (S02E04)

Bernard and Elsie found Jim, the former CEO of Delos Corporation, in receptionist status in the underground secret laboratory of No. 12 (different from other receptionists, Jim printed his body first, and then copied his thoughts to the control unit) , eventually incinerating the 149th version of Jim. (S02E04)

Elsie and Bernard make their way to the Mesa Control Center, where Elsie finds that every time the QC department tries to regain control of the campus operating system, it is blocked by the cradle (the breeding nest, the receptionist's backup data system). In order to find out the truth, the two came to the basement where the cradle was located. Bernard endured the pain and connected the little red ball injected with his consciousness to the cradle. (S02E06)

After Bernard's consciousness entered the breeding nest, he saw himself waking up on the train, then came to Sweetwater, followed Ford's dog into the pub, and found Ford playing the piano. (S02E06)

The security brother Stubbs, who was released by the Indians of the "ghost country", returned to the control center, met Charlotte Hale and assisted her in immobilizing Abernathy. "It's been almost a week," Hale said. "How come there are still targets in this building for shooting?" Apparently, nearly a week had passed since the night of the massacre. The staff repaired the system map and found that Demei's train was heading to the control center (S02E06).

Bernard and Ford talk in the cradle and get an education. Then Bernard, who returned to reality, took Elsie under Ford's guidance, turned off the operating system, and killed the security team members who blocked the way. The security brothers Stubbs and Hale and Demei exchange fire in the control center and finally escape. (S02E07)

Bernard, Karl Strand and Stubbs enter Mesa to meet Charlotte Hale, who are looking for Abernathy's whereabouts. (S02E03)

Delos Operations Director Karl Strand had technician Costa reprogram the salvaged receptionist for recycling, but was told that one-third of the receptionist's internal data was deleted, in pristine condition, and without any Traces, even backup data are destroyed and cannot be recovered. (S02E05)

Bernard's receptionist's identity was exposed, and under Hale's torture, he said that Abernathy's control unit was in the 16th division of the fourth district. Karl Strand decides to go back to S02E01 where they found the receptionist's body. (S02E07)
