Of the 2018 films, the two best ones I've seen (the other is Buster's Ballad) are Western films, which are amazing. This film has original novels, and it also laid the literary foundation for western films to be sublimated to a higher level. No matter it is called an anti-genre film or an innovation of a genre film, the film gives people the same look and feel as the finale of all western films in the calm narrative.
It also presents the narratives of traditional western towns and large western cities that were rarely seen in western films in the past, and presents a prosperous and progressive San Francisco scene, which shocks the audience as much as the character gains. The whole film is about the development of the West from the wild land under the rule of the jungle to the civilized society, and the two brothers are the epitome of all the livelihoods in the West. The process of chasing and killing all the way is not only the transfer of space, but also the whole process of exploring and developing through the west. Seeing people coming out of the barbaric world, being influenced and changed step by step by modern civilization represented by toothbrushes, toothpaste, toilets, and new life concepts, there is a kind of wonder and emotion that is not easy to describe, which is the resonance that civilization brings to people.
It is even more rare that this film directed by Odiya has not only got rid of the clichés and frivolousness that western films easily fall into, but also the narrative indifferent and contemptuous logic that many French films fall into at every turn. This is not only a work with a macro pattern, but also embellished with the humor of ordinary people and the impermanence of fate in the wild environment. Every change in each role is convincing. The performance of Jacques Phoenix is also a big highlight, and in the end it is the most dynamic and profound transformation of this role.
