The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by the British writer John Fowles. It tells the story of Anna and Mike, who are both actors. They play the male and female protagonists in the same movie, and the love story developed by them both in and out of the play. "The French Lieutenant's Woman" adopts a layered structure, that is, the form of a play within a play, and repeatedly uses montage to form the interlaced effect of ancient and modern times, connecting the stories reasonably. The story of Sarah and Charles goes from separate to combined, and finally has a happy ending. Mike and Anna from the close to the point, and finally is a tragic ending.
