Takahata Isao once again proved his strength, Reivew on My Neighbors the Yamadas

First of all, the animation is not guided by the plot. It is a series of pictures made up of the daily life of the family. Seeing how the Yamada-kun family interacts is as vivid and interesting as seeing our own family life. The film also relishes the absurdity and surrealism, as Mr. Yamada imagines himself as Superman saving his wife and mother-in-law.

For Yamada-kun, the animation style is like the style of the comics in the newspaper, in which the simple linear series fills the screen, the charm is completely irresistible, and the familiar and harmonious background music adds to its whimsical atmosphere, including the famous Classical soundtracks (eg Mahler's First Symphony, Mendelssohn's Wedding March, and Mozart's Toy Symphony).

For the mainstream audience of atypical animation, my neighbor's Yamada-kun may have a hard time finding his own audience, and the film did not perform well in Japan. However, I think it is very rare for people to use their imagination and try to find something different from the traditional.
