Delicate and bright pictures and exciting soundtracks are the characteristics of Makoto Shinkai's works, and "Cloud" is no exception. But aside from the seemingly complicated political and sci-fi elements, what "Cloud" tells is actually a very simple, old-fashioned love story about commitment. The plot is quite contradictory, the parallel world theory is understated, and things are complicated, but it turns out that it can be solved in such a convenient way in the end. There are too many artistic freeze-frame pictures, and it feels artificial. Although it is set in a military conflict, there are no tense and exciting battle scenes. The slow rhythm and dull plot make me drowsy...
The biggest disadvantage of Makoto Shinkai's animation films is that there is no impressive story (< "The Voice of the Stars" is an exception), too much emphasis on the beauty of the picture, in exchange for often empty and pale plot and characters. We can list most of the characters and stories created by Hayao Miyazaki. How much do you remember about the people and events created by Makoto Shinkai? Makoto Shinkai is not yet an animation master, but he is still young and still has time. I hope that in the future he can bring us a real and unforgettable classic with his own style.
