How did F18 fighter pilots escape the enemy from hunting by triangulation?

In the air over enemy-occupied areas, fighter pilots performing missions and special forces have all experienced SERE prisoner-of-war training (survival, avoidance, escape, resistance). In the vast virgin forest, in order to avoid hunting, you need to constantly read the map and compass. So how do you determine your location on the map?

Today I recommend you to watch the movie "Deep Behind Enemy Lines." An F18 Hornet was shot down by a Sam anti-aircraft missile, and the pilot had to parachute over the enemy's area. As soon as it landed, it was searched by militants.

In order to find a safe escape route, the most important thing the pilot needs to do is to use triangulation to determine his position on the map. Only in this way can we avoid the enemy's pursuit.

Triangulation is a method of determining one's own location by taking direction lines from two distant locations. In anti-spyware movies, this method is also used to detect the location of enemy radio stations.

Grid line map

In order to understand the triangulation method, first I want to explain the map with grid lines. In the movie, the carrier instructor and pilot agreed to meet at 13341. So how to understand this set of numbers?

The coordinate grid line is similar to the following situation, each grid is divided into ten equal parts, 13341 is at position A in the figure below.

The steps of the triangulation method:

In order to successfully perform triangulation, you must see two obvious landmarks from your perspective.

First, use the compass to determine the direction so that the north of the map faces the true north.

Second, place the compass on the map so that the positioning line is parallel to the north-south longitude of the map. The white shaded part in the picture is the compass. The black straight line above is the positioning line. There are 4 black straight lines on it.

Third, move your compass so that the middle point of the top side of the bottom plate is aligned with the landmark, and the positioning line is aligned with the longitude of the map.

Fourth, draw a straight line along the direction of the landmark you just found, and you are somewhere on this straight line.

Fifth, use this method to draw a line for the second landmark. The place where these two lines intersect is where you are.

The pilot was finally rescued

Finally, after many difficulties, the pilot finally escaped the enemy's pursuit and returned to the aircraft carrier.

If it weren't for some cool shots, this would be a second-rate movie at all. There is an officer with a big tongue, can't find someone who can articulate clearly?

Behind Enemy Lines quotes

  • [Last lines]

Chris Burnett: [Aboard the helicopter after the rescue mission] Hey, Admiral! You're holding a letter for me. I'd like to have it back!

Admiral Reigart: I think I can find it!

[Reigart hands Burnett the letter. Burnett then crumples the letter, which had stated his intent of leaving the Navy. The rest of the crew look on happily and amused. The song 'Rescue Blues' by Ryan Adams fades in]

  • Chris Burnett: [to Reigart over the radio] Sir, I shouldn't have left Stackhouse.
